JORDAN: NEW AMMAN TO DAMASCUS EXPRESS TRAIN
Arabic/Nat
A new express rail service between Amman and Damascus was inaugurated on Thursday.
The rail link signifies an improvement in relations between Jordan and Syria following the death of Jordan's King Hussein last February.
Syrian President Hafez Assad was highly critical of the late King Hussein following Jordan's peace deal with Israel, but tensions have eased in the wake of his death.
A yellow and red diesel train adorned with posters of Jordan's King Abdullah and Syria's President Hafez Assad pulled out of Amman station on the inaugural run of express passenger service between the two countries.
The Hejaz Railway was initially launched by the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the century.
Nearly a century later, the line from Amman to Damascus has finally been changed into an express route.
It will take the passengers six hours instead of twelve hours to cross the 228 kilometres (143 miles) between the two Arab capitals.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
For the timing we hear that the (new) trip would take four hours (to the border), others say it would take eight hours, I want to try myself to find out. I expect that the trip will be interesting.
SUPER CAPTION: Sidiq Al-Yamani
At the same time as around 120 passengers were boarding at Amman station on the Jordanian side, some 32 passengers were leaving Damascus for the Syrian leg of the service.
For this inaugural service, the two trains were to exchange passengers at a border station.
Six trains - three diesel and three steam - have been renovated at an estimated cost of 100 thousand U-S dollars for the service.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
I expect that this train will be better than the old one and the relations between us and Syria would be also better.
SUPER CAPTION: Mohamed Hani, a restaurant owner
Before the upgrade, the Amman-Damascus line ran only once a week.
The old steam trains would carry freight and a maximum of 10 passengers.
Some one-thousand passengers are expected to take the express service every week.

Syria: First steam train in 5 years departs Damascus for resort of Al-Zabadani
A railway connection between the suburbs of Damascus and the resort city of Al-Zabadani was resumed, Monday, after a break of almost five years.
The steam-powered train dates back to 1896, and despite its appearance and sluggish speed the train has became a symbol of a return to normal life.

The Hejaz Railway was a narrow gauge railway that ran from Damascus to Medina, through the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia, with a branch line to Haifa on the Mediterranean Sea.It was a part of the Ottoman railway network and was built to extend the line from the Haydarpaşa Terminal in Istanbul beyond Damascus to the holy city of Mecca. It got no further than Medina, 400 kilometres short of Mecca, due to the interruption of the construction works caused by the outbreak of World War I.Damascus to Medina is 1,300 kilometres .

STORYLINE:
Only refugees from Syria and Iraq were allowed to cross the border from Greece into Macedonia on Wednesday, after Balkan countries introduced stricter transit rules.
Nations along the Balkan route this week agreed to limit entry only to those from the two war-torn countries, turning back Afghans.
This border screening procedure has triggered bottlenecks on various frontiers along the route.
Local authorities in Gevgelija, at the border with Greece, were on Wednesday being supported by Czech and Austrian police forces to help enforce the decision.
Officers were seen checking refugees' documents before they were allowed to continue their journey.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed that a train carrying 743 refugees from Syria and Iraq has left Gevgelija en route to Austria.

Jordan - Hejaz Railway
October 2006
The Hejaz railway, which transported pilgrims from Damascus to Medina, was one of the great train journeys of the world. Now, an ambitious plan is underway to restore it.
At the Qadem station on the outskirts of Damascus, tourists inspect rusty old steam trains. Nearly a hundred years ago, these trains were used on the Hejaz line. Now, they could again be used again. The Hejaz railway was once a joint project of the entire Islamic world, explains archaeologist Ulrich Bellwald. Maybe it will bring people together again. Restorers hope to rebuild sections of the line destroyed by Lawrence of Arabia, update the infrastructure and renovate station buildings. But hampering reconstruction efforts are hoards of treasure hunters, digging for rumoured gold under the tracks.

Damascus streets packed as Western nations consider military strikes
(12 Apr 2018) The streets of Damascus were packed with people on Thursday evening despite reports of an imminent airstrike.
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday had warned Russia to get ready for a missile attack on its ally Syria.
But on Thursday, he said that an attack on Syria could take place very soon or not so soon at all, arguing he had never signaled the timing of retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack that he had suggested was imminent a day earlier.
Residents of the Syrian capital were either going out to shop in one of the city's main market or to hang out with family members and friends at the capital's cafes, restaurants and sweets shops.
Thursday is usually busy as it comes on the eve of Syria's two-day weekend that begins on Friday.
In Hijaz Square that is home to the capital's main train station that stopped working after the conflict began, three policemen in black uniforms directed traffic to prevent jams.
People mostly appeared not concerned about a possible US strike on their country and going on with their lives as usual.

The Hejaz Railway [IgeoNews]
The Hejaz Railway was a line of narrow gauge railway that joined between 1908 and 1916 the cities of Damascus and Medina, both belonging to the then Ottoman Empire.
The outbreak of the Arab Revolt, the railroad in 1916, for his role in transporting troops, suffered several guerrilla attacks that left badly damaged road, particularly in the region of the Hijaz. Traffic on that stretch, ie south of the current border between Saudi Arabia and Jordan, not reopened until today trains and roads destroyed by the guerrillas of Lawrence of Arabia and other elements of the railway are an attraction tourism in the Saudi kingdom.
