Top 7 Shark Attack Beaches
7: Boa Viagem, Pernambuco, Brazil:
Since Brazil began keeping track of shark attacks in 1992, 57 people have been attacked. Of those 57 attacks, around
20 have been fatal, and about 40 percent of the 57 attacks have occurred at Boa Viagem.
6: Makena Beach, Maui, Hawaii:
It’s not necessarily the number of attacks, but rather the nature of them. Tiger sharks frequent the coast looking
to feed on turtles swimming near the surface, which is where people swim and surf.
5: Reunion Island:
With 10 shark attacks in the last 2 years, 3 of which have been fatal, Reunion Island is atop the worlds worst shark
attack locations. Due to the frequency of people being attacked, the government has issues a ban on swimming.
4: Second Beach, Port St. Johns, South Africa:
Many people go here because of the cage diving with Great Whites. However this involves luring sharks in with bloody
carcasses, this makes the sharks associate humans with food. As a result the number of shark attacks has sky
rocketed
3: Perth, Western Australia:
Perth, is a hotspot for sharks. In 2013 5 Fatal shark attacks occured in the space of ten months.
2: Ponce de Leon Inlet, Florida:
In 2001 a record 22 shark attacks were reported. In 2008, that record was broken when 23 attacks were reported.
Luckily, none of those 23 attacks were fatal.
1: New Smyrna Beach, Florida:
To date there has been a staggering 238 attacks but despite the alarming number, none of them have been fatal. Yet.
Most of the bites are from young bull sharks nibbling for what they think is food.
