Alaska Jet Ski & Helicopter Tours to Glaciers, Adventures in Whittier & Anchorage | Go North Ep 16
Jet Ski to Glaciers & Helicopter in Chugach Mountains
Episode 16 takes us to Whittier Alaska where we explore the towns living arrangements in the Begich Towers then go Jet Skiing to Glaciers in Blackstone Bay.
Whittier is only accessible by air, water, or the one way tunnel that shares traffic with a train. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (aka the Whittier Tunnel) is a rough rock tunnel that is the only ground access to the city and until the early 2000's this tunnel was for trains only. Each end of the tunnel has long waiting areas where traffic lines up, and if no trains come street vehicles are allowed through the tunnel each half hour after the tunnel has cleared from opposing traffic.
We then head over to Anchorage first with a stop in Turnagain Arm to watch the Alaska bore tide surfers. In Anchorage a friend took us for a ride in a Robinson R44 helicopter into Alaska's Chugach Mountains all the way up to Lake George. Bob Kaufman spoke with us about life in Alaska before we head further north and get our first, but not last glimpse of the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights in Alaska.

Helicopter and Dog Sledding on a Glacier in Alaska - Seward
There are some glaciers you can drive to, but very few that you can stroll to. Just 15 miles from Seward—where many cruises embark and disembark—Exit Glacier is one of the most popular road-accessible glaciers in the state. In fact, you can walk almost right up to the face of it in 30 minutes, by way of the Edge of the Glacier Trail.
Exit Glacier is not huge, but it looks big up close, so it makes a great place for photos. It’s also a good spot to learn about glacial movement, since it’s receding quickly; there's even a guide marking its recession over the past 120 years.
The well-developed trails here have good footing and interpretive signs, explaining the return of plant life after the ice. There’s also a self-guided audio tour on The Alaska App, narrated by the Park Service’s chief interpretive ranger.
If you’re looking for more of an adventure, take the Harding Icefield Trail, which climbs 3,500 feet in 4 miles, and gives great views of the glacier. There are also guided hikes on the glacier, if you want to strap on crampons and walk on the ice.

It sought to explore the airfield near Mount McKinley. The other kit out of the transportation hub because of flight connections throughout the facility. In order to walk to the glacier above the McKinley I needed a special god. This is because the risk may be liable. The plane finally emerged as the firmament. McKinley is the tallest mountain in North America. People who love the mountain is said to want to come here to find once in a lifetime everyone and anyone who lives in America, of course. Soon we could see the glaciers of Mount McKinley. Like a river flowing along the valley glaciers formed a minister. If you do that slowly flowing glacier is only about 2m per year accumulated, people will accumulate over the years going by without really can feel the flow of equipment. It looks bluish glaciers increases the density of the ice absorbs all other light and because it reflects only blue light. The snow will be piled enormous pressure while the density increases by ten thousand years has turned into a glacier. The plane fell over the glacier. If you can still listen to the sound of water flowing. Hers flowing glaciers melt. You also see the water underneath the glacier, pure and clean nature is a subject of admiration wonderful. And words, it is difficult to convey the impression force of nature expressed. I had put the soul to the Minister.

Such an amazing & special day in Juneau, Alaska!
I was a bit terrified of the helicopter ride, but my worries were instantly washed away when we took off- the helicopter flew so smoothly (even through the rain!) We went from seeing lush, green mountains to pure white snow everywhere! The dog sledding was such a thrill and the dogs were so friendly. It was truly a once and a life time experience.
