Helicopter photographs Newcastle from 1801 Nobbys height for Macquarie 2010

On the 7 May 2010 a Hunter Port Corporation helicopter hovered over Nobbys at an altitude comensurate of 203 feet, which was the original height of the island back in 1801. This was done to enable University of Newcastle Coal River Working Party surveyors and geologists to ascertain sight lines across the channel, and for a comparison with the only known painting taken on the spot from the summitt in around 1816 - 1818 before the Macquarie Pier was begun. Thanks so much for the co operation of the Port Corporation, Emeritus Professor Fryer and Russell Rigby. This will enable our surveyors to determine how much of the Fort Scratchley/Signal Hill cliff was removed to build the Pier and establish the correct sight lines.

From an Indigienous perspective this will be the first time since 1818 that Newcastle has been viewed from the original eyes of the kangaroo 'Whibayganba'. For more info:
