Live Beer Review - Hell Bay Brewing - English Ale
We review the English Ale from nano brewing operation from nearby Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
This is a 5.2% ale.
Named so for the area in which the beer is made. Hell Bay is the body of water also known as Cherry Hill Beach.
This beer is a tribute to English style ales. It has a distinct malty, toasted flavour with a medium body. This beer showcases a combination of five carfefully selected malts.
This was a google+ hangout on-air, with this being streamed live over Youtube at the time of recording. #hangoutonair #avoidingchores
Maritime Beer Report - November 20, 2015
This has been another busy week of craft beer news in the Maritimes.
PEI Brewing says the release of this year's Transmitter Coffee Stout - a collaboration project with Charlottetown's Receiver Coffee Company will be November 24th. It won't be around for long so grab a bottle as soon as you can.
Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault says Buckdjeuve is now available in bottles at the brewtique and elsewhere in NB soon, make sure you ask for it at your local ANBL store. This is a strong 7.3% ABV.
The Pump House Brewery has released Bière de Garde, 2014 Atlantic Canadian Beer Awards Gold Medal Winner. The name Bière de Garde is a bit of a play on words: it is widely purported that this beer was so good people wanted to keep it, but in reality the term “de garde” meant a prolonged maturation time after primary fermentation to French and Belgian brewers. During this maturation time, the yeast has time to reduce unwanted fermentation by-products and taste-inducing esters are produced. This beer is 6.5% ABV and 15 IBUs.
They also released their 2015 Stonefire Ale in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The wort of this ale is heated by immersing hot stones into it that can reach temperatures up to 700°C (roughly 1,300°F). This tremendous heat forces the wort sugars to caramelize to the stones instantly, thus creating a one of a kind taste. A faint hint of smokiness in the background also pays tribute to this medieval brewing technique. This weighs in a 6.5% ABV abd 7 IBUs.
Big Spruce Brewing along with Stillwell has released its newest single hopped pale ale this week. This time it is Gimme Simcoe weighing in at 5% ABV and available now at the brewery.
Garrison Brewing has news on two of their popular seasonals. Winter Warmer came out today in 6-packs at the brewery and NSLC. It is a strong 7% ABV and look for this in a 650 ml bomber at the brewery in a few weeks. They will be releasing their Spruce Beer next Friday at brewery, NSLC and privates and next Saturday the 28th they will have casks of it and Winter Warmer as well as mulled cider. Lastly they are doing a tap takeover at Ducky's in Sackville NB tomorrow from 7-9 PM and are bringing 18 beers and some are very special. Check out my blog post for details.
Hell Bay Brewing has a special limited supply of its Oatmeal Pale Ale in bottles at the brewery in Liverpool.
In the Chronicle Herald reported that Nine Locks Brewing is slated to open in January and will produce between 350,000 and 400,000 litres of beer next year. They also say that IPA and Extra Special Bitter are the first two types of beer customers will see on NSLC shelves in four-packs of 473 ml cans. These beers, along with other offerings will be available at the brewery’s storefront in cans, growlers and kegs on the Waverley Road in Dartmouth.
The Nook and Cranny in Truro has a new dark beer on tap. It is a Milk Stout and is 4.7 ABV.
North Brewing has Stillwell's birthday beer Two for sale. It is a rustic farmhouse and is very good. Available only in bottles and is 4.2% ABV.
Staying with North their collaboration, Battery Park, is set to have its public opening on December 10th. The date coincides with Slow Food International’s annual celebration, Terra Madre Day. It’s an annual celebration of all things local and sustainable.
Propeller Brewing released one of its most popular seasonals this week Revolution Russian Imperial Stout. Available now at the Prop Shops, coming soon to the NSLC and in January to ANBL. This is a warming 8% ABV.
Spindrift Brewing announced that they now have unfiltered Coastal Lager on tap at the brewery for all you beer nerds.

Rockbottom Brewpub's new offering is a sour saison called Synaptic Illusion. The blog describes it as Berries, fruit and spice with a little bit of funk and a whole lot of tart; a little farmhouse ale with a serious wallop of refreshing flavour and acidity. It comes in at 5.0% ABV and 7 IBUs.

Words at War: Mother America / Log Book / The Ninth Commandment
On 1 September 1939, Germany and Slovakia—a client state in 1939—attacked Poland.[46] On 3 September France and Britain, followed by the countries of the Commonwealth,[47] declared war on Germany but provided little support to Poland other than a small French attack into the Saarland.[48] Britain and France also began a naval blockade of Germany on 3 September which aimed to damage the country's economy and war effort.[49][50]
On 17 September, after signing a cease-fire with Japan, the Soviets also invaded Poland.[51] Poland's territory was divided between Germany and the Soviet Union, with Lithuania and Slovakia also receiving small shares. The Poles did not surrender; they established a Polish Underground State and an underground Home Army, and continued to fight with the Allies on all fronts outside Poland.[52]
About 100,000 Polish military personnel were evacuated to Romania and the Baltic countries; many of these soldiers later fought against the Germans in other theatres of the war.[53] Poland's Enigma codebreakers were also evacuated to France.[54] During this time, Japan launched its first attack against Changsha, a strategically important Chinese city, but was repulsed by late September.[55]
Following the invasion of Poland and a German-Soviet treaty governing Lithuania, the Soviet Union forced the Baltic countries to allow it to station Soviet troops in their countries under pacts of mutual assistance.[56][57][58] Finland rejected territorial demands and was invaded by the Soviet Union in November 1939.[59] The resulting conflict ended in March 1940 with Finnish concessions.[60] France and the United Kingdom, treating the Soviet attack on Finland as tantamount to entering the war on the side of the Germans, responded to the Soviet invasion by supporting the USSR's expulsion from the League of Nations.[58]
In Western Europe, British troops deployed to the Continent, but in a phase nicknamed the Phoney War by the British and Sitzkrieg (sitting war) by the Germans, neither side launched major operations against the other until April 1940.[61] The Soviet Union and Germany entered a trade pact in February 1940, pursuant to which the Soviets received German military and industrial equipment in exchange for supplying raw materials to Germany to help circumvent the Allied blockade.[62]
In April 1940, Germany invaded Denmark and Norway to secure shipments of iron ore from Sweden, which the Allies were about to disrupt.[63] Denmark immediately capitulated, and despite Allied support, Norway was conquered within two months.[64] In May 1940 Britain invaded Iceland to preempt a possible German invasion of the island.[65] British discontent over the Norwegian campaign led to the replacement of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain with Winston Churchill on 10 May 1940.[66]
