Words from the Great War: Nightwalker by Mario Petrucci [for Ivor Gurney]
NIGHTWALKER - for Ivor Gurney. A truly compelling First World War poem inspired by the Trench Poet and composer Ivor Gurney.
‘Nightwalker’ was written by Mario Petrucci for the IVOR GURNEY SOCIETY ANNUAL ADDRESS (entitled ‘The Silent Ones’) which he delivered at Hellens House, Ledbury, 18 October 2003.
The scene in his poem is based on a fleeting reference, by Gurney, to a dangerously sleepwalking soldier [see Gurney’s letter to Marion Scott (undated) – probably early August 1917 (as quoted by Michael Hurd)]:
“… the man who walked in his sleep to Fritzy, slept well, woke, realised, and bolted…”
The word ‘Nightwalker’ is used by Gurney to describe himself in another letter to Marion Scott [postmarked 18 October 1924]. He also uses the phrase here and there in his poems (“night walker” appears in ‘Poem for End’ and he refers to “night-walkers’ promise” in ‘The Poets of My Country’).
Petrucci’s poem and video conjure brilliantly the atmosphere of the World War One trenches in France, bringing to life this bizarre wartime incident. The video is further enriched by the superb war music of Ian Venables, used here by kind permission. His piece is a setting of Isaac Rosenberg's last poem, ‘Through These Pale Cold Days’.
