Helliwell Provincial Park, Hornby Island, BC
Donated by John Helliwell, he felt this piece of land was just too spectacular for the public not to have access to. Thanks to him, we all get to enjoy the dramatic grassy bluffs and old-growth forests that make Helliwell so unique and awe-inspiring.

Snippets of our camping adventure to Hornby Island, BC, Canada
Was a wonderful week of beach bumming, skim boarding, snorkeling, making campfires, cooking food on the campfire, playing music at the campfire, and shenanigans.
Great low budget vacation near Vancouver BC, takes 3 ferry rides to get there but its totally worth it!

Thanks for coming with us to Hornby Island. To get to Hornby Island from Vancouver Island you take two ferries. First you ferry over to Denman Island, drive across Denman Island and take another ferry to Hornby. We actually missed our ferry connection, which meant ice cream!
Our first day on Hornby, we moved campsites and did the Helliwell loop to see the cliffs. Helliwell Provincial Park is a beautiful park on Hornby Island where you can enjoy the Helliwell Bluffs and walk the Helliwell Park Trail.
Our second stop was Tribune Bay. This is a beautiful beach sandy beach for swimming because the water gets so warm. Sailboats also often anchor here for the evenings out of the wind.
The next day we visited Ford’s Cove. The rock structures are Ford’s Cove are some of the most fascinating geology I have ever seen. We went back to Tribune Bay and swam in the ocean in the afternoon and then we had pizza at the bakery in the evening.
Our final day we did an unmarked trail across from the bakery. It was a place to hike that was near our campground, Brad’s Dad’s Land, on Hornby. It had some fabulous lookout points. We were probably the only people on Hornby who were not mountain biking.
No paddle boarding for us on Hornby this time because it was too windy. We are looking for a place to paddle board on Vancouver Island on a lake. Our final day we hiked at Helliwell again. We didn’t finish our hike in time, mostly because we spend so much time gathering film footage, drone footage and photography. So instead of going to the co-op, which closes at 6:00 pm we went to the bakery for pizza and a live band.
We enjoyed Hornby Island this year even more than we did last year!

Hornby Island Adventure
Filmed and Edited by Shane Philip
My son Aiden and I went on a two day excursion to Hornby Island this weekend and I put together a little cinematic vlog featuring some of the exploring we got up to while we were there. Some of the water stuff I wasnt able to film as I didn't bring a camera that could get wet. Next time... Thanks to all the wonderful Hornby Island folks we met. More to come soon.

Great trip to Hornby Island. It required 3 ferry rides. In the video we visit Helliwell Park which has a scenic 5 Km hike around the cliffs. It is known for bald eagles who like to soar in the high winds. We were lucky enough to see quite a few. From there we went to Tribune Bay. They call this spot the Canadian Hawaii. Try and picture it in summer. Warm for swimming. We are there in April. It is mild but not warm.

Sea Otters at play off Helliwell Park Hornby Island BC
at one time, sea otters were so hunted for their pelts, and because fishermen saw them as a threat to salmon stocks, that they almost became extinct in British Columbia.
While visiting Helliwell Park on Hornby Island BC in August 2011, we had the pleasure of witnessing four sea otters at play.
How were we able to identify them as sea otters, and not seals? Witness the skinny tails flipping as they dive!

So Sad And Lonely lyrics
I know these old people
Too bad to see
Them sittin by the windows
So sad and lonely
I kinow and old man
Now he' really old
He don't now his name
Or what he's been told
He had lots of friends
Yeah, He had a full life
No his memories failed
And he don't know his wife
Yeah,,,
I know these old people
To bad to see
Them sitting by the window
Soo sad and lonely
Sittin by the window
So sad and lonely
Sittin by the window
So sad and lonely

The island is also a popular mountain biking destination, with a variety of designated trails in Mount Geoffrey Regional Nature Park, Mount Geoffrey Escarpment Provincial Park and Crown Land. The total land area is 29.92 square kilometres (11.55 sq mi), of which 40% is parkland.

Real Things: Hornby Island Free Store and Recycling Depot
On Hornby Island in British Columbia, Canada, we were introduced to The Free Store - a massive systematic recycling and reuse operation.
Started in 1978, the island now diverts over 70% of the trash that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Pretty incredible! We were delighted to give and take along with the community while we were there and hear the stories and intentionality behind the Free Store and amazing recycling depot.
Pacific Paradise - Hornby Island
Our annual vacation spot, Hornby Island is a small island just between Vancouver and Texada Island. Although we usually spend three weeks, we were only able to stay for two this year, so everything felt a bit rushed. But that didn't mean I wasn't able to take the time to film this video!
