Crazy Summer At Hellshire Beach Jamaica
At Hellshire you can expect to be greeted by the warm Caribbean Sea, people selling raw oysters, horse rides, local music and the best fried fish in the world! Jamaicans vacationing locally or from overseas always stop by Hellshire for their escovitch, brown stew, steam fish fix.
Hellshire, is located on the south coast of Jamaica about 20 minutes away from Kingston. It is not a known tourist spot mainly because of the distance from the north coast where most hotels and villas are located.
If you grew up in Jamaica this was often a weekend “flex” to make with family or friends to have some of the best fresh fried fish known to mankind. Be prepared and don’t expect anything fancy. The setting is very informal – shorts, shirt & sandals – and come ready to eat.
The white sand is your floor – these are little huts built on the beach. When you enter Hellshire, you will be approached by men trying to assist you with parking. If it is crowded you may want to welcome their help, if not, politely tell them no thank you.
If you get help parking, make sure to tell them to keep an eye on your car and when you are leaving give them a small tip.
There is no charge for parking – it is just customary to tip anyone who assists you in finding a parking spot on those crowded days. Some popular eating spots at Hellshire are Aunt May’s or Merl’s which are next door to each other.
Once inside a restaurant, you select your seafood from a cooler, they clean it right away and cook to your liking.
You can have fried or steamed fish, lobster, bammy, and the best festival on the the universe.
Fried fish is cooked in a cast iron dutch over wood fire and served with escovitch sauce which is scotch bonnet pepper, onion, sliced carrots in hot vinegar, the perfect touch to fried fish.
Expect to sit on wooden lounge chairs with no padding so bring a towel to sit on.
The average cost of a meal including drinks and side orders is about $25 USD per person. The fish is priced by the pound so make sure to get the cost before you order.
Foreigners should visit the beach with a local, some fish huts may try and take advantage of tourists and some are genuinely very nice.
If you plan on visiting Hellshire for the first time, go on a weekday when it is not as crowded. This popular spot gets very busy on the weekends. Make sure to bring cash, as most shops don’t have the capability to take cards.
Enjoy the experience of a lifetime with the best seafood the world has to offer, white sandy beaches, warm and inviting people, sun sea and fun. The name is Hellshire.

Dispite the many trials that faced us this day, we managed to gather up a successful family beach day. We venture off to Portmore, Waves Beach. Entry is free for the most part, only cost would be letting off a small ting for the locals who “help” you park.
Let's talk about the best part of this location, THE FOOD! Them ago rush you, as you reach, but trust him, food lit.
Now that's out the way, in general the water wasn't lovely, so we didn't really stay in the water. However, we did a bag a madness on shore, even my mother a rave to the Stone Love CD.

Hellshire Beach, Portmore, Jamaica
There are several beaches in the Hellshire area of St. Catherine, the biggest and busiest is Fisherman's Beach, known to Jamaicans as 'Hellshire Beach'. The beach gets very busy on weekends and local holidays with sunbathers and water-lovers from nearby Kingston and Portmore. Hellshire does not draw many tourists, except for ex-pats. Known to ex-pats as a roots beach, Hellshire draws a good crowd and is known for a wide choice of quality seafood.
According to Jamaica Travel and Culture, Hellshire Beach is lined with thatched-roof restaurants offering a choice of fresh fish and lobster, fried or steamed to your liking, served with vegetables, bammy and festival. In terms of food quality there are no bad restaurants in Hellshire and all charge reasonable prices.
Other attractions include the warm Caribbean Sea, inner-tubes for hire, jet-ski rides, donkey rides and loud reggae music.

Chilling at Hellshire Beach, Jamaica
A short film of my visit to Hellshire Beach in Jamaica on June 12. During my time in Jamaica I had to visit the beach! Since I stayed in Kingston, one of the nearest beaches for me was Hellshire Beach, near Portmore, in St.Catherine.
Sadly I missed the opening of the FIFA World Cup 2014, because I was chilling here at that time. They did had bars on the beach where I could watch but I didn't (I wasn't alone).
How I love the beach and the calmth and peace the ocean/sea gives you. I had an incredible swim in the Caribbean sea. Enjoy the video!
