Julia Bradbury follows the Wainwright Walks up Helm Crag
This was part of the first series of walking programmes with Julia produced by Skyworks for BBC4. It was deemed as one of the most successful of its time. The walk begins at the heart of Grasmere village, and through the National Trust estate at Allan Bank. The route follows Easedale Road then into the woodland at the foot of Helm Crag. A rocky stairway heads up past Lancrigg Crag, Jackdaw Crag and White Crag. You get great views across Easedale Beck to Easedale Tarn and the waterfall of Sour Milk Gill. Hairpin right and onto the ridge, then venture across the boulder ridge to reach the canon shaped barrel of rock, ‘The Howitzer’, the mountains true top. A personalised dvd with the full programme can be bought on C77

Places to see in ( Grasmere - UK )
Grasmere is a village and tourist destination in the centre of the English Lake District. Grasmere takes its name from the adjacent lake, and has associations with the Lake Poets. The poet William Wordsworth, who lived in Grasmere for 14 years, described it as the loveliest spot that man hath ever found.
Before 1974, Grasmere lay within the former county of Westmorland. Today it is part of the county of Cumbria. The village is on the river Rothay which flows into Grasmere (the water body), which lies about 0.5 km to the south. The village is overlooked from the north-west by the rocky hill of Helm Crag, popularly known as The Lion and the Lamb or the Old Lady at the Piano.
A number of popular walks begin in the village of Grasmere , including the ascent of Helm Crag, a longer route up to Fairfield and a moderate 200-metre ascent to Easedale Tarn. The village is also on the route of Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk.
The A591 connects Grasmere to the Vale of Keswick over Dunmail Raise to the north, and Ambleside to the south. In other directions, Grasmere is surrounded by high ground. (As of Christmas 2015, the A591 was washed away on the Keswick side of Dunmail Raise, resulting in a long detour. It was reopened in May 2016.) To the west, a long ridge comes down from High Raise and contains the lesser heights of Blea Rigg and Silver How. To the east, Grasmere is bordered by the western ridge of the Fairfield horseshoe.
Grasmere is served by the Stagecoach 555 bus service connecting towns in and near the Lake District, such as Keswick and Lancaster. In summer it is also served by an open top double-decker 599 service, operated by Stagecoach, which runs between Grasmere and Bowness-on-Windermere.
Grasmere's famous Rushbearing Ceremony, centred on St Oswald's Church, has ancient origins. Grasmere is now home to the winner of the 'Get Started Award 2014' awarded by the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs, the Handmade Chocolate Shop. Today's Grasmere Gingerbread is made to a secret recipe popularised by Sarah Nelson (1815–1904).

Scrambling on Sourmilk Gill, Belles Knott & Helm Crag, Lake District - 6 May 2012
A walk of almost 11 miles from Grasmere, the walk incorporates some scrambling though these can easily be avoided if required. Starting just outside of Grasmere, the walk heads up Easedale and then follows the course of Sourmilk Gill, an easy scramble except during times of spate. The stream leads to Easedale Tarn (a perfect wild camp location). From the tarn the walk follows the path before joining the stream for another scramble before leaving towards the foot of Belles Knott. Belles Knott classed as a Grade 2 scramble is then ascended before descending the grassy back and then climbing again up to Blea Rigg. From the ridge there are great views of Stickle Tarn, Harrison Stickle & Pavey Ark.
The route then follows the ridge towards Sergeant Man and then onto High Raise. From High Raise the path leads to Low White Stones before heading off piste and descending towards Brownrigg Moss via Birks and Birks Gill. From here the final ridge contains Calf Crag, Gibson Knott and finally Helm Crag and the Howitzer. The path then descends back to Grasmere before returning to the starting location.

Lake District Walk 3 Grasmere Circular Route 1st May 2018
We had a wonderful time in Grasmere today. Firstly we parked on the layby on the main road and walked into town. After visiting the church and Wordsworth's Grave, we had to have some of the Gingerbread biscuits at Sarah Nelson's! Then it was up to the National Trust Property of Allan Bank, where Wordsworth lived for 2 years ( but he never liked it apparently ). Here we saw Red Squirrels and completed the full Woodland Walk. Next we walked around Grasmere Lake, taking the Coffin Route back, stopped at Dove Cottage and the museum ( another Wordsworth property but not National Trust) before heading back to Grasmere for coffee and treats.
A lovely day and a lovely walk. Enjoy!!
