Victoria: British Columbia Parliament Buildings
The British Columbia Parliament Buildings are located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and are home to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.
The Speaker and the Serjeant-at-Arms are amongst those responsible for the legislative precinct, which by statute include the Parliament Buildings and grounds.
The Neo-baroque buildings face north on Belleville Street facing the Inner Harbour and diagonally across from The Empress Hotel. A statue of Queen Victoria stands on the front lawn as well the British Columbia Legislature Cenotaph commemorating the province's World War I, World War II, Korean War and Afghanistan War dead. Atop the central dome is a gold-covered statue of Captain George Vancouver. Free guided tours of the facility are offered year-round.
Construction of a new Parliament Building was first authorized by an act of the provincial legislature in 1893. Francis Rattenbury, a recent English immigrant, 25 years old, entered the contest and eventually won the competition.
The British Columbia Parliament Buildings began operation officially during 1898. The grand scale of its 500-foot (150 m) long andesite façade, central dome and two end pavilions, the richness of its white marble, and combination of Baroque rigorous symmetry, use of domes and sculptural massing with the rusticated surfaces of the currently popular Romanesque Revival style contributed to its being an innovative and impressive monument for the young province.
During the 1994 Commonwealth Games, free music concerts were held on the front lawns of the buildings, attracting as many as 40,000 people. Similar-sized crowds have gathered on the front lawn over the years, ranging from political protests and rallies, such as during the Solidarity Crisis of 1983, to celebrations of various kinds, including the BC 150 ceremonies.
The sculpture on the buildings was designed by the provincial librarian, E.O.S. Scholefield and executed by Charles Marega and his assistant Bernard Carrier. For the exterior of the library Marega created 14 figures: Chief Maquinna, Captain George Vancouver, Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie, Dr. John McLoughlin, Hon. John Sebastian Helmcken, Captain James Cook, Sir James Douglas, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Alexander McKenzie, Simon Fraser, Lord Lytton, Sir Anthony Musgrave, David Thompson, and Col. R.C. Moody. Carrier produced twelve figures of women, all allegorical, three around each of the building's four domes.
In 1932, artist George Southwell was commissioned to paint murals in the rotunda depicting scenes from British Columbia history from 1792 to 1843. The work was completed three years later. Decades later, controversy arose over the depiction of west coast aboriginal people in the murals, which in modern times is now regarded as degrading. One mural, entitled Labour, portrays bare-breasted aboriginal women hauling timber while a white man watches. In another entitled Justice, an aboriginal chief is shown standing before a judge (said to be Matthew Baillie Begbie), suggesting the subjugation of natives to colonial law. However, Southwell's daughter claimed that her father depicted the chief as standing before another judge, one who championed native rights (notwithstanding Begbie's positive record in that regard).
A 2001 report, commissioned by the New Democrat government of the day, recommended that the murals be relocated to a museum where they could be given historical perspective. However, as the murals are painted on to the walls of the rotunda, the cost of removing them was estimated at $280,000. In April 2007, the legislature voted to remove murals, with only 3 of the 71 members voting against the motion. Since that vote, the murals have been fully restored and hidden from public view behind false walls.
????VICTORIA BC WITH A 6 MONTH OLD! August 30th, 2016 - Josh and Mimi Vlogs
TRAVEL DAY! Our little two day trip to Victoria BC was a smashing success! Liam enjoyed the trip for the most part and even got his first taste of chocolate ice cream.
Day 1
Our day started with a road trip from Seattle to Port Angeles, where we boarded the MV Coho walk-on ferry to Victoria BC. We checked in to the Huntingdon Manor hotel ( right by the water to drop our bags off before exploring the city on foot. Wandering past the BC Legislature buildings, Thunderbird Park, the Helmcken House and the world class Empress Hotel lived up to all our expectations. Then a little hike up Government Street to Bastion Square saw us exploring Munro's Bookstore (you gotta see the interior), and grabbing a bite of ice cream and more. The Gate of Harmonious Interest in Canada's oldest Chinatown was the last stop for us before heading back to our hotel for the night.
Day 2
After a good night's rest, we enjoyed an amazing buffet breakfast with a beautiful garden view. Liam tried to go for the coffee TWICE! The little guy just can't wait to grow up. Then we hit the pavement so to speak and saw two churches, the Bay Center and several other sites around town. One last stop at Burger King found Josh using the Ladies' bathroom?! before heading back to our return ferry and the long car ride back to Seattle.

Bastion Square, Victoria BC Canada
Bastion Square is a historic pedestrian mall in Victoria, British Columbia. The square has a ceremonial entry arch at View and Government streets, and the exit on the Wharf Street side opens to a staircase with a view of the Inner Harbour.
Part of the original Fort Victoria, find some of Victoria’s finest restaurants, pubs and cafés (and some of the sunniest patios) in Bastion Square. The area is also part of a bustling outdoor summer market.
The square sits in the heart of downtown overlooking the Inner Harbour and includes several notable late-19th Century landmarks:
•The Court House (designed by architect H.O. Tiedeman) was the first concrete building in Victoria, built in 1889.
•The Law Chambers, designed by F.M. Rattenbury, was built in the late 1800s.
•Burnes House, originally a hotel in 1882 (then a brothel and later a warehouse) was restored in 1967.
•Strousse Warehouse was built in 1885 as a supply centre for gold miners.
•The Board of Trade building was built in 1892 by A.M. Muir.
Be sure to pass through Helmcken Alley for a more sordid look at the square’s past. Once a jailhouse where executions took place and a graveyard for unclaimed bodies of prisoners, it is said to still be haunted since the prison’s demolition in 1885.
Events held at the square include the Bastion Square Public Market, the Holiday Market, and the Art Walk.

Ghost Sightings In Victoria, Vancouver Island B.C. UYTI190
Do you believe in ghosts and haunted houses? In tonight·s Unlocking Your Truth episode Ghost Sightings In Victoria, Vancouver Island B.C. we interview Frank Talaber who has some interesting stories for you about this paranormal phenomenon.
If you live on Vancouver Island in lovely British Columbia you may have heard of the many different ghost sightings in Victoria. So do you believe in spirits that wander our world? Ghosts by another name which of course is the most popular term. Almost all of the different cultures on our beautiful planet believe in some form of afterlife. And hand in hand with that is the belief that some of these spirit entities may still walk the earth for one reason or another. As far as this paranormal phenomenon is concerned it is a very popular belief held by almost half the North American population.
This is not just a modern conviction. The concepts of ghostly apparitions have been around for eons. Their stories are included in many books and documents including everything from the Bible to Shakespeare and beyond.
Ain't Afraid Of No Ghosts (Ghostbusters theme song lyric) In our more current Metaphysical realm, spirits are a major part of the doctrine. Mediums talk with passed loved ones, psychic readers can sense spirits, and some individuals can even speak with the spirits of pets that have passed. There are numerous ghostbusters that have felt that they have proof of running into one or more of these scary or not so scary spirits.
The ideas and concepts that many people in this area of study of our human belief systems cannot necessarily come to an agreement on the nature of ghostly apparations let alone whether they are real or not. Do ghosts have matter as a formulation, can they pass through walls and objects, can they do physical harm to us the living?
Regardless of what you may believe to be true many of the ghost stories and ghost sightings in Victoria including the reports of haunted houses stir the imagination and attract voyeurs.
Are Ghosts Real? Whether or not you believe there are those that do. A large percentage of these individuals do so because they have had some form of experience in regards to spooky encounters. One of the most common experiences is feeling, sensing or seeing some form of an apparition in a house or home. Many things that 'go bump in the night' are attributed to specters. Whether these are true ghost stories or not I am sure that the people relating them may believe they are.
One day, in the not so far future, I am certain that some form of technology that can accurately monitor the presence of a spirit will be created. Until then each of us will just have to bend to our own belief or unbelief.
Ghost Sightings In Victoria Being a resident of British Columbia, I have heard many stories of real haunted houses, and am unaware of a haunted house near me but have been made cognizant of more than one haunted house story in Victoria, Vancouver Island B.C.
The Haunting Of Vancouver Island Today we are speaking to somewhat of an expert on the subject of real ghost stories of Vancouver Island B.C., Frank Talaber. Frankl is a prolific author and his books have a wonderful theme. A couple of his titles re Raven's Lament, Thunderbird's Wake, and Shaman's Lure. He touches on the historical lore of the First Nations.
Here is a little quote about Frank from his website,
Frank Talaber’s Writing Style? He usually responds with: Mix Dan Millman (Way of The Peaceful Warrior) with Charles De Lint (Moonheart) and throw in a mad scattering of Tom Robbins (Even Cowgirls Get The Blues). PS: He’s better looking than Stephen King (Carrie, The Stand, It, The Shining) and his romantic stuff will have you gasping quicker than Robert James Waller (Bridges Of Madison County).
His latest offering touches on the ethereal realm. 'The Joining'. The novel includes psychics, crystal skulls, Ghosties and much more. It is a definite must read.
In researching his books he has come across some very interesting information about the paranormal and more specifically ghost sightings in Victoria and other Vancouver Island legends.
Frank shares some short ghost stories in our interview that may awe or shock you.
