Bellringing at All Saints, Helmsley, North Yorkshire
I joined my ringing comrades from my tower and a few from other places on a Ryedale Ringing Adventure, or in layman terms, my Tower Outing in the Ryedale area. First stop was Helmsley, which I used to visit quite a bit as a child (as well as Pickering) after a 1hr 30 minute drive from home, we rang the glorious Taylor 8 of All Saints Church. The Bells are a 15 cwt Taylor Ring of 8 tuned to F#, and they sound cracking, and fits a lovely town like Helmsley. Taylors never disappoints, well we have a Taylor 8 in our own tower, maybe we're spoilt!! XD

Lo He Comes With Clouds Descending(Helmsley) - Hymn Lyrics & Music

LYRICS:
Lo He comes with clouds descending(Helmsley)
Words: John Cennick (1718-1755), 1752;
as altered by Charles Wesley (1707-1788), 1758;
and then altered by Martin Madan (1726-1790), 1760
Lo! He comes
with clouds descending,
Once for favored sinners slain;
Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of His train:
: Hallelujah! :
Christ appears on earth again.
Every eye shall now behold Him
Robed in dreadful majesty;
Those who set at naught and sold Him,
Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,
: Deeply wailing, :
Shall the true Messiah see.
Those dear tokens of His passion
Still His dazzling body bears;
Cause of endless exultation
To His ransomed worshippers;
[: With what rapture :]
Gaze we on those glorious scars!.
Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,
High on Thine eternal throne;
Savior, take the power and glory,
Claim the kingdom for Thine own;
: Hallelujah! :
Everlasting God, come down!

Here is my complete recording of the Presbyterian 1955 Hymnbook:
1 Lo! He comes with clouds descending,
Once for favored sinners slain;
Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of His train:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
God appears on earth to reign.
2 Every eye shall now behold Him
Robed in dreadful majesty;
Those who set at naught and sold Him,
Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing,
Shall the true Messiah see.
3 Every island, sea, and mountain,
Heav’n and earth, shall flee away;
All who hate Him must, confounded,
Hear the trump proclaim the day:
Come to judgment! Come to judgment! Come to judgment!
Come to judgment! Come away!
4 Now redemption, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear;
All His saints, by man rejected,
Now shall meet Him in the air:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
See the day of God appear!
5 Answer Thine own bride and Spirit,
Hasten, Lord, the general doom!
The new Heav’n and earth t’inherit,
Take Thy pining exiles home:
All creation, all creation, all creation,
Travails! groans! and bids Thee come!
6 The dear tokens of His passion
Still His dazzling body bears;
Cause of endless exultation
To His ransomed worshippers;
With what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture
Gaze we on those glorious scars!
7 Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,
High on Thine eternal throne;
Savior, take the power and glory,
Claim the kingdom for Thine own;
O come quickly! O come quickly! O come quickly!
Everlasting God, come down!
This is believed to be the original version of Cennick’s text:
1 Lo! He cometh, countless Trumpets,
Blow before his bloody Sign!
’Midst ten Thousand Saints and Angels,
See the Crucified shine,
Allelujah! Welcome, welcome bleeding Lamb!
2 Now his Merits by the Harpers,
Thro’ the eternal Deeps resounds!
resplendent shine his Nail Prints,
Ev’ry Eye shall see his Wounds!
They who pierc’d Him, shall at his appearing wail.
3 Ev’ry Island, Sea, and Mountain,
Heav’n and Earth shall flee away!
All who hate him must ashamed,
Hear the Trump proclaim the Day:
Come to Judgment! Stand before the Son of Man!
4 All who love him view his Glory
Shining in his bruised Face:
His dear Person on the Rainbow,
Now his Peoples Heads shall raise:
Happy Mourners! Now on Clouds he comes! He comes!
5 Now Redemption long expected,
See, in solemn Pomp appear;
All his People, once despised,
Now shall meet him in the Air:
Allelujah! Now the promis’d Kingdom’s come!
6 View him smiling, now determin’d,
Ev’ry Evil to destroy!
All the nations now shall sing him,
Songs of everlasting Joy!
O come quickly! Allelujah! Come Lord, come!

Lo He Comes with Clouds Descending (Helmsley) - Choir of Christ Church St Laurence Anglican Church
Lessons and Carols for Advent
Broadcast by ABC Radio Sunday, December 21, 2014
Recorded at Christ Church St Laurence Sydney (CCSL)
Tonight, we are going to church with one of Australia's finest choirs, the choir of Christ Church St. Laurence in Sydney.
The choir is shortly to depart for Europe, where they will be the Choir-in-Residence at St Pauls Cathedral in London for the last week of January.
They will also be singing a high mass at Notre Dame de Paris. (It doesn't come much better than that.)
Tonight is the final Sunday in the Christian season of Advent, a period of reflection leading up to Christmas, and we are going to join the choir and congregation of Christ Church St Laurence for an Advent Service of Lessons and Carols.
The service is also rather special for many of us here at the ABC, as Christ Church was the home church of a former Executive Producer of Religious Programs at ABC Radio, Ronald Nichols, who passed away a few days before this service was recorded. So this recording is dedicated to him.
Advent actually acknowledges two events, one is in remembrance of the birth of Jesus around 4 BCE. The other looks forward to the promised second coming of Christ and the Kingdom of God.
This service of carols and readings leads us through the bible from the ancient prophetic texts through to the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus.
Your guide for the service is our own Noel Debien.
Music in this episode:
1. Gregorian antiphon: O Oriens (O morning star)
2. The Advent responses (composed by Alan Wilson, b. 1947)
3. Hymn: O come, O come Emmanuel VENI EMMANUEL
4. Sing Joyfully (psalm 81), composed by William Byrd (1540-1623)
5. O Nata Lux (O light born of light) composed by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585).
6. Arise, shine for thy light is come, composed by George Elvey (1816-1893)
7. Hymn: Hills of the North rejoice, composed by Martin Shaw (1875-1958)
8. Benedictus in G, composed by Herbert Sumpsion (1899-1995)
9. Hymn: On Jordan's Bank the Baptists' cry WINCHESTER NEW
10. Tomorrow go ye forth, composed by Gabriel Jackon (b.1962)
11. Veiled in darkness, composed by Glenn Rudolph (b. 1956)
12. Gregorian antiphon: O Sapientia (O wisdom coming forth)
13. Magnificat from the Collegium Regale service by Herbert Howells (1892-1983)

Lo He Comes With Clouds Descending
Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending - Organ Hymn Series #5
Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending is the fifth hymn in our Organ Hymn Series and is the first in our Advent Hymn Series. This wonderful Advent hymn uses the tune HELMSLEY, which is commonly attributed to Thomas Olivers, who probably heard the musically similar Irish concert song Guardian angels, now protect me on the street. It was first published in the second edition of Wesley's Select Hymns with Tunes annexed of 1765. The text was written by John Cennick in 1752 and then was substantially revised by Charles Wesley in 1758.
This is the fifth hymn in the organ hymn series, where we not only perform some of the best-loved hymns in the world, but we also showcase a variety of hymns from different organs in churches throughout the UK.
The video was uploaded with kind permission from Christ Church, Wimbledon. The organ is a J.W. Walker & Sons electro-pneumatic organ built in 1898 and rebuilt in 1954.

LYRICS BELOW. Written partly by John Cennick and partly by Charles Wesley, this version was first published in 1760. I have grown to love this hymn as I listened to it over and over again while putting this video together. It is a treasure. Recorded by Richard Jensen on the album, “The Plan of Salvation”, you'll want to listen more than once. Spectacular scenery from Canada and USA is a bonus!
