The most iconic attraction in Helsinki. This cathedral defines the Helsinki Skyline and is the star of all postcards. Very easily accessible and free to enter, it is a must-see for all visitors to Helsinki. Finish off by seeing the statues in Senate Square just below the cathedral and have a snack sitting on the high stairs leading to the attraction.
A distinctive landmark in the Helsinki cityscape, with its tall, green dome surrounded by four smaller domes, the building is in the neoclassical style. It was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel as the climax of his Senate Square layout: it is surrounded by other, smaller buildings designed by him.
The church's plan is a Greek cross (a square centre and four equilateral arms), symmetrical in each of the four cardinal directions, with each arm's façade featuring a colonnade and pediment. Engel originally intended to place a further row of columns on the western end to mark the main entrance opposite the eastern altar, but this was never built.

Welcome to Helsinki, Finland everyone! We arrived around 3 PM on a train from St. Petersburg, and had plenty of daylight being the end of May when it stays light...well, more or less, all night! Anyway, the first day in Helsinki we just walked around the city, seeing some of the major sights - these include:
Uspenski Cathedral - the main Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Helsinki, the construction took place between 1862-1868. The cathedral sits on the hillside and overlooks the city, easily visible from the harbor area or even Senate Square - the structure used to cause ire among many Finns for being of Russian design, but nowadays is generally accepted and appreciated in the city.
Helsinki Cathedral - a Finnish Evangelical Lutheran church, this building sits on a large hill with many steps up right on Senate Square. It was built in dedicated to the Grand Duke of Finland, Russian Tsar Nicholas I, between 1830-1852.
Senate Square - the oldest part of central Helsinki and known as the city center, this square houses a statue of Russian Tsar Alexander II, who gave Finns some degree of autonomy in comparison with previous Russian rules.
After these sights, we head on a cruise to Suomenlinna, and we get some great views from the boat enroute - these span the whole harbor area, including both cathedral, Market Square, and more.

Uspenski Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Helsinki, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary). Its name comes from the Old Church Slavonic word uspenie, which denotes the Dormition. Designed by the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev (1808--1862). The cathedral was built after his death in 1862--1868.
The crypt chapel of the cathedral is named after the holy Alexander Hotovitzky, who served as vicar of the Orthodox parish of Helsinki 1914--1917.
The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. On the back of the cathedral, there is a plaque commemorating Russian Emperor Alexander II, who was the sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Finland during the cathedral's construction. Uspenski Cathedral is claimed to be the largest orthodox church in Western Europe.
In 2006, about 516,500 tourists visited the church.
