Finland (Finnish: Suomi [suo̯mi] (About this soundlisten); Swedish: Finland Swedish pronunciation: [ˈfɪnland]), officially the Republic of Finland (Finnish: Suomen tasavalta, Swedish: Republiken Finland) is a country in Northern Europe bordering the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland, between Norway to the north, Sweden to the northwest, and Russia to the east. Finland is a Nordic country and is situated in the geographical region of Fennoscandia. The capital and largest city is Helsinki. Other major cities are Espoo and Tampere.
Helsinki (/ˈhɛlsɪŋki, hɛlˈsɪŋki/; Finnish: [ˈhelsiŋki] (About this soundlisten); Swedish: Helsingfors [hɛlsɪŋˈfɔʂː] (About this soundlisten)) is the capital city and most populous municipality of Finland. Located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, it is the seat of the region of Uusimaa in southern Finland, and has a population of 648,650. The city's urban area has a population of 1,268,296, making it by far the most populous urban area in Finland as well as the country's most important center for politics, education, finance, culture, and research. Helsinki is located 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Tallinn, Estonia, 400 km (250 mi) east of Stockholm, Sweden, and 390 km (240 mi) west of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It has close historical ties with these three cities.
Bicycles were introduced in the late 19th century in Europe, and by the early 21st century, more than 1 billion have been produced worldwide. These numbers far exceed the number of cars, both in total and ranked by the number of individual models produced. They are the principal means of transportation in many regions. They also provide a popular form of recreation, and have been adapted for use as children's toys, general fitness, military and police applications, courier services, bicycle racing and bicycle stunts.
The basic shape and configuration of a typical upright or safety bicycle, has changed little since the first chain-driven model was developed around 1885. However, many details have been improved, especially since the advent of modern materials and computer-aided design. These have allowed for a proliferation of specialized designs for many types of cycling.
The bicycle's invention has had an enormous effect on society, both in terms of culture and of advancing modern industrial methods. Several components that eventually played a key role in the development of the automobile were initially invented for use in the bicycle, including ball bearings, pneumatic tires, chain-driven sprockets and tension-spoked wheels.

Helsinki Belediyesi'nden Halka Bisiklet Hizmeti - City bikes of Helsinki
What are city bikes?
City bikes are shared-use bicycles that can be borrowed for a fee by anyone in central Helsinki. Your chosen season pass (day, week, whole season) covers up to 30 minutes of bike use per time. For an extra charge, you can use a bike for a maximum of five hours at a time. After the ride, the bike is returned to a bike station.
In summer 2016, there are 500 bikes in 50 locations around the city. The bikes are available at bike stations around the city center between Ruoholahti, Taka-Töölö and Sörnäinen. The bike stations are located at approximately 300-meter intervals. The area will be expanded in summer 2017 and more bikes will be added. The goal is for there to be 1,500 bikes and 150 bike stations by that time, within an area extending from the heart of the city to Munkkiniemi, Pasila and Kumpula.
The easiest way to take advantage of the city bike scheme is to register. Once you have registered, you can pick up a bike whenever you need one. In order to make the use of city bikes easy also for visitors, city bikes can be borrowed using a payment card, without registration, from the following bike stations: Kaivopuisto, Unioninkatu, Rautatientori/East, Kiasma and Hakaniemi Metro Station. With a payment card, you can borrow bikes for 1-4 persons at a time.
A one day pass also includes a maximum of 30 minutes of continuous bike use at a time. During the day, you can use a bike for up to 30 minutes at a time several times. If you use a city bike for more than 30 minutes at a time, you will be charged a small extra fee.

From Wikipedia:
Helsinki is the capital and most populous city of Finland. Located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, it is the seat of the region of Uusimaa in southern Finland, and has a population of 650,058. The city's urban area has a population of 1,268,296, making it by far the most populous urban area in Finland as well as the country's most important center for politics, education, finance, culture, and research. Helsinki is located 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Tallinn, Estonia, 400 km (250 mi) east of Stockholm, Sweden, and 300 km (190 mi) west of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It has close historical ties with these three cities.
Together with the cities of Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen, and surrounding commuter towns, Helsinki forms the Greater Helsinkimetropolitan area, which has a population of nearly 1.5 million. Often considered to be Finland's only metropolis, it is the world's northernmost metro area with over one million people as well as the northernmost capital of an EU member state. After Stockholm and Oslo, Helsinki is the third largest municipality in the Nordic countries. The city is served by the international Helsinki Airport, located in the neighboring city of Vantaa, with frequent service to many destinations in Europe and Asia.
Helsinki was the World Design Capital for 2012, the venue for the 1952 Summer Olympics, and the host of the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest in 2007.
Helsinki has one of the highest urban standards of living in the world. In 2011, the British magazine Monocle ranked Helsinki the world's most liveable city in its liveable cities index. In the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2016 liveability survey, Helsinki was ranked ninth among 140 cities.

Helsinki 2018 City Bike Tour
A morning touring Helsinki on the city bikes!
Helsinki/Espoo City Bikes: Flow Friday
Trips between 09.08.2019 14:00 - 20:00
This visualization is based on the open data from HSL. The open data includes information about the stations for departure and return and the timestamps for these events. How could one make a animated visualization of the trips, when there's no information about the route the cyclists have taken?
It would've been possible just to draw lines between the the start and end points and make the bikes fly above the city. Sure we can do better.
To make the trips between the stations look more realistic (and to make the visualization prettier) we calculated the shortest paths between all the stations. Then we made the cyclists to travel through those paths instead of the straight line. What a difference!
So, to sum it up, the animation is semi realistic: when someone in real life has actually left from a station, it it shown here, and when the same person arrives to the endpoint the time is correct. What happens in between, is just a (good) guess: the cyclist (point) moves at constant speed via the shortest route.
The bikes are shown in a couple of randomly assigned colors to help the viewer keep on track of one particular cyclist.

In My Dream Helsinki was the Bicycle Capital of the World
I once had a dream that the Finnish capital Helsinki was a bicycle capital too. Well, that was only a dream but meanwhile I have to be glad: It is quite safe to use bicycle lanes in Helsinki because in general you are not able to ride too fast with your bicycle.
Public TRANSPORTATION in HELSINKI | FINLAND Travel Guide
Public TRANSPORTATION in HELSINKI | FINLAND Travel Guide
Helsinki is fairly small as Capitol cities go, but not small enough to have just one simple method of transportation. Not the fear though! We have broken it down and made public transportation easy for anyone on any budget!
In this video you will discover a variety of bus lines, city tram networks, metro and regional trains, Helsinki Airport transportation, self-service bike rentals and of course, Masha's favorite form of transportation....walking (check out the app Izi Travel for a list of Helsinki walking tours)!
With So much different types of transportation methods, purchasing options, kiosks, and apps it is almost impossible to try and memorize them all. But moving around the city is actually easier than it seems.
After watching this video you should feel confident about how to get to and from the city, how to best get around the city and how to do it within your budget!.
Listed below are all the various transportation options we tried in Helsinki and will explain to you in this comprehensive and concise Transportation Helsinki video (shameless keyword):
1. City Trams: The reliable and extensive tram network has 11 lines, and it connects the different parts of the inner city to each other. Annually, the tram network has nearly 57 million passengers.

2. Metro - The Helsinki Metro (Finnish: Helsingin metro, Swedish: Helsingfors metro) is a rapid transit system serving Greater Helsinki. It is the world’s northernmost metro system. The metro system consists of 2 lines, which serve a total of 25 stations. It has a total length of 35 kilometres (22 mi). The metro serves as the predominant rail link between the suburbs of East Helsinki and the western suburbs in the city of Espoo and downtown Helsinki.
3. Buses - The public transportation system has three zones: internal, extended region (2 and 3) and the whole region (all zones). Internal covers a single city. Regional covers the Helsinki metropolitan area or the whole area without Helsinki. The whole region covers the Helsinki metropolitan area and additionally the Kerava, Kirkkonummi and Sipoo municipalities.
A new system comprised of four (4) zones was introduced in April 2019. Internal, regional and extended regional tickets have now been replaced with Zones A, B, C and D.

4. Bicycles - The super popular city bikes have been around for a few years, now, and the city is constantly installing new stations due to high demand. Recently an international study found that the Helsinki city bike system is the most used public bike rental system in the world!

5. TrainRailway: The Helsinki commuter railway (Finnish: Pääkaupunkiseudun lähiliikenne/ Swedish: Huvudstadsregionens närtrafik) is the rail system serving Greater Helsinki, Finland. The network is part of the HSL network, and is operated by VR, the Finnish state-owned national railway company. Together with the Helsinki Metro, buses, and trams, the network forms the heart of Helsinki’s public transportation infrastructure.
