Top best places to visit in Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. It is the capital and largest city of the country.
The most prominent buildings are in the center but Helsinki is called the Green Capital because a third of the city is covered in green areas.
The oldest part of central Helsinki is Senate Square and its surroundings.
The square is dominated by the Lutheran Cathedral a distinctive landmark in the cityscape.
In the center of the square is located a Statue of Emperor Alexander II.
He initiated several reforms increasing Finland’s autonomy.
Other important buildings are the main house of University of Helsinki.
The oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available.
...and Government Palace which served as the seat of the Senate and Council, and is now the headquarter of the Prime minister.
Uspenski Cathedral is the largest orthodox church in Western Europe. With its golden domes and red brick facade is a characteristic point of the city.
Cathedral is located in the waterfront area and near Market Square.
Nearby is the main east-west street in the city, colloquially known as “Aleksi”.
Another highlight of the city is Railway Square.
The south side is formed of the Ateneum, classical art museum.
To the west side are two ornate entrances to Central Station – a bigger one for public use, and a smaller one exclusively for the President.
And to the north side features the Finnish National Theatre.
Excavated directly into solid rock, Church in The Rock is one of the most popular tourist attractions.
Helsinki offers great possibilities for outdoor activities and relaxation.
Just check out the waterfront area near Market Square.
And visit one of the many parks.
Like Kaivopuisto, a beautiful park by the sea in the southernmost part of the city.
Or Toolonlahti, a bay surrounded by a nice and dotted with attractions such as the Concert Hall and the National Opera.
Hietaniemi Beach is a good place to be on sunny days.
If you like shopping you can do the old fashioned way at Old Market Hall
or modern style in one of the many shopping malls, like Kamppi Center.
In 1952 Helsinki hosted the Summer Olympics and still holds many of the sports facilities, such as:
The Olympic Stadium with its impressive 72m high tower.
The tower is open for visitors and offers impressive views of the city.

Helsinki (Finland) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Helsinki in Finland.
Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

Travel Helsinki, Finland - The Helsinki Cathedral
Take a tour of Helsinki Cathedral in Finland -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Standing on a small hill in the center of Helsinki is a remarkable old building.
Gleaming in Neoclassical white is the extraordinary Helsinki Cathedral.
Arrayed around the top of the cathedral are zinc statues of the Twelve Apostles.
The green roof is composed of a single large dome surrounded by four smaller ones.
The six pillars and temple-like fronting of the Lutheran church is reminiscent of the Pantheon.
The inside of the cathedral is spacious and well-lit from the domed ceilings.
Helsinki Cathedral is positioned at the head of the expansive Senate Square, which complements the church.

Tourist attractions in Helsinki Finland at Christmas time, despite bad weather
In our short Helsinki tour with lovely Ella, we showcase some of our favourite attractions and sights. Helsinki is the capital of Finland located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Helsinki can be amazing, not only in the summer, but also during dark winter days. Even in bad weather there is a lot to see and experience. In our video we showcase following attractions and interesting places to see:
- Helsinki Ferris wheel and sky sauna (SkyWheel)
- Christmas market
- Fazer coffee shop
- Moomin shop
- Cathedral of Helsinki
- Outdoor swimming pool (Allas Sea Pool)
- Old Market Hall (where you can taste and buy Finnish delicacies and souvenirs, such as reindeer meat)
Helsinki is especially beautiful during celebration of 100 years of Finnish independence. It’s rumoured that even Prince William said during start-up event Slush 2017 that he wants to visit sky sauna in Helsinki.

Definitely enjoyed my one week in #HelsinkiSecret Residence with my college bestie Katrina. I heard summer is the best time to go to Finland so you can enjoy the nice weather, so we did! Everyone said summer this time around was chillier than usual, but I still enjoyed there. I hope you guys like this video-- I'll be posting more on my blog so watch out for that one too.
Also, spelled Kallio wrong and Market Square isn't a hall. My bad! Typo.

HELSINKI TOURISM - Finland capital
Welcome to Helsinki ...,
Helsinki is the capital of the Finnish State located in the south and is the largest city in Finland. Helsinki is a metropolitan city with well-organized urban transport systems, as well as modern transport supporting facilities to connect Helsinki with various cities and other countries, by land, sea and air.
A fascinating place and the center of activity for locals and tourists is Market Square, this place is on the seafride that harbors various large and small ships. This market is one of the famous open markets in Northern Europe. Here, visitors can shop for souvenirs, clothes, flowers, fruit and other necessities. The food vendors in these markets sell in tents at a relatively cheaper price than anywhere else in Helsinki and they offer a wide selection of foods such as Salmon, Meatballs, snacks and even Asian food. Not far from the Market Square, there is a row of shops that sell goods branded internationally even though the goods offered are not as much and as complete in Western Europe.
Helsinki is a city rich in history and culture, so in this city there are many museums that provide a lot of information and save the historical and cultural heritage in this country. Famous and fascinating museums for tourists include the National Museum of Finland, the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, the Gallen Kallela Museum which is a renowned Finnish painter and the Finnish Ateneum National Art Museum. In addition, the building became the center of Helsinki's attractions due to its architectural design and utility, among others Central Railway Station, University of Helsinki, Helsinki Olympic Stadium, Suomenlinna where there are Swedish Castle, & Senate Square.
Visiting Helsinki, not only travel to new places but also experience history and culture that can be found in every corner of the city through the architecture of buildings, museums and life of local residents who form a blend of modern life and history of Finland as part of Scandinavian countries .

12 THINGS TO DO IN HELSINKI | Guide to Finland's Capital
Heading back to Finland - and specifically Helsinki - was our greatest surprise this summer. As the capital city, it has the attractions any big city offers, yet it somehow retains plenty of small town charm. One of the main reasons is that you're never far from nature. Hop on a bicycle or kayak and you within a few kilometers you'll feel as though you're all alone at one with nature.
