Helsinki Tram System in Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki Tram System in Helsinki, Finland
The Helsinki tram network forms part of the Helsinki public transport system organised by Helsinki Regional Transport Authority and operated by Helsinki City Transport in the Finnish capital city of Helsinki. The trams are the main means of transport in the city centre. 56.7 million trips were made in 2013. The Helsinki system is one of the oldest electrified tram networks in the world.
If you're on a budget, you can get a good overview of the city aboard a regular local tram on three main routes, accompanied by free downloadable guides from the tourist office website that briefly describe notable sights along the way.
Purchase tram tickets onboard, or at sales points such as Kamppi bus station, many R-Kiosks and the tourist office.
Tram 2 Get a classic overview of Helsinki on this loop from the kauppatori, passing landmarks including Helsinki's train station, Tennispalatsi, Karhupuisto, Hakaniemen Kauppahalli, the Design District, Kaivopuisto and Vanha Kauppahalli.
Tram 4 On this one-way architectural route, standout sights include the Uspenskin Katedraali, Senaatintori, Tuomiokirkko, Parliament House, Finlandia Talo and the Oopperatalo.
Tram 6 This one-way design- and culinary-focused route takes you past highlights including the Hietalahden Kauppahalli, Sinebrychoffin Taidemuseo, the Design District, the Ateneum, Hakaniemen Kauppahalli, Teurastamo and out to Arabiakeskus.
The tram network is built almost exclusively on the streets of Helsinki, making it a traditional tram system rather than a light rail one. The track gauge is one metre. The network consists almost entirely of double track rail. In some parts the tracks are separated from other road traffic; elsewhere they share road space with cars and buses.
The trams are powered with electricity conveyed by overhead wires. Trams have their own traffic lights, distinguished from normal lights in that they are based on symbols of single colour: an upward-pointing arrow signifies go, a horizontal line prepare to stop and the letter S stop. The traffic lights are synchronised to allow tram and bus traffic to flow relatively smoothly. This system is called HeLMi (Helsinki Public Transport Signal Priority and Passenger Information).
Helsinki’s secret is that you can get everywhere even without a car. Public transport is a road to paradise. You can find heaven at the end of many bus routes. Pack with a picnic, ride to the last stop and start exploring.
Trams are the main mode of public transport in the inner city.
Tram 2/3 (former 3T/3B) is regarded as the sightseeing tram in Helsinki, a way to travel around among the locals. But it isn’t the only route that offers lots of interesting things to see and do along the way. For all those interested in architecture, route number 4 can especially be recommended. Everyone interested in design, art and culinary culture should hop on tram number 6. It is recommended to carry along a public transportation route map to help you locate all the stops and sights.
Single tram tickets can be purchased from a ticket machine (€2.50). You can also buy a day-ticket (starting from €9/one day) that covers all public transportation in the city. Day-tickets can be purchased from Tourist information at Helsinki Airport (Terminal 2A) as well as several other selling points. Tram routes are also included in the Helsinki card.

Helsinki's Tram Network|Drawyah
As well as an underground metro system, Helsinki operates a tram network that runs alongside the roads and pedestrian routes within the city. My most common mode of transport, we take a ride on the trams all around the city as we look into the history of the network and some of the newest trains in service!

Welcome aboard Helsinki ”Crazy” tramline. Step in one, find yourself from another and in the end, from the third line!
Unfortunately my computer couldn’t handle 2hour 20 minute 4K ultra high definition material in one piece, so the video of the journey is cut into three parts and also speeds up three times faster.
In this first episode, line 3 carries you from Meilahti to Linnanmäki amusement park, the district of Kallio, Hakaniemi marketplace, Helsinki Central railwaystation and the distric of Eira. Number 3 line ends in Olympia Terminal, where tram changes its linenumber to 2.
