STORYLINE
Cuba's Hemingway Fishing Tournament is in full swing as islanders and visitors alike pay tribute to the Nobel laureate.
Ernest Hemingway's legacy is strongly felt in Cuba and nowhere more so than in the small fishing village of Cojimar, just 8 kilometres (5 miles) east of Havana.
It was here that the man that locals affectionately named Papa spent much of his time and kept his boat.
During that time, Hemingway was inspired to write his award-winning novel The Old Man and the Sea.
Now, 50 years after his suicide, local villagers continue to pay homage to Papa with an internationally recognised fishing tournament that carries his name, and several weekends of back-to-back celebrations which include food, music and dancing throughout the picturesque town.
A monument to the writer takes centre stage in Cojimar's square.
The bronze bust of Hemingway, made entirely out of melted-down propellers donated by local fishermen, was commissioned a year after his death in 1961.
The monument stands a few feet from Cojimar's fort, built by the Spanish over 500 years ago, close to the spot where the author docked his boat, the Pilar.
Locals say the first fishing tournament took place in 1938, and in 1950 a group of Cojimar fishermen asked the American writer to collaborate with the tournament that would later carry his name.
In 1960, Cuban leader Fidel Castro participated in the tournament and won.
Hemingway presented Castro with a trophy in what is known to be their only encounter.
Photographs of the meeting adorn the walls of La Terraza, a restaurant that has become a shrine to Hemingway for both tourists and locals alike.
Carlos Yera, an 88-year-old local fisherman remembers him fondly.
Hemingway was a very good man. A marvellous man. He loved us, the fishermen, very much. He lived for us, Yera said.
The short novel, The Old Man and the Sea, written in 1952 about an old Cuban fisherman earned Hemingway the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.
Hemingway left Cuba in the early days of Castro's revolution, never to return.
But in the hearts of many locals it is clear that he never really left.

50 year anniversary of historic meeting between Fidel and Hemingway
(28 Apr 2010)
STORYLINE
It has been half a century since two of the most iconic figures of their time met in the small Cuban fishing village of Cojimar, just 8 kilometres east of Havana, and local residents will never forget about the historic encounter that took place at the height of the Cold War.
It was 50 years ago this May that Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro and American Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway met for the first and only time.
Early in 1950, a group of fishermen from Cojimar asked the American writer, whom they affectionately nicknamed Papa, to collaborate with a fishing tournament that would later carry his name.
Hemingway lived in nearby Havana, and was a regular visitor to the town, where he kept his beloved boat Pilar docked next to the fort built by Spaniards hundreds of years ago to protect the entrance of the bay.
Ten years later, in 1960, fresh from having triumphed with his revolution the year before, Fidel Castro participated in the local fishing tournament and won.
The winning trophy was handed to Castro by Hemingway in what is known to be their first and only encounter.
This town remembers Fidel and Papa devotedly and recalls how Papa's favorite bar and watering hole was La Terraza, a seafood restaurant with a view of the sea and passing fishing boats.
The restaurant maintains a cordon around the table where Castro and Hemingway had lunch all those years ago.
Castro returned for lunch in 2002 accompanied by American film director Oliver Stone.
La Terraza has become somewhat of a shrine to Castro and Hemingway, and its walls are covered in photographs from that unforgettable day in 1960 when they visited.
Cojimar is the place where Hemingway gathered his inspiration to write The Old Man and the Sea, after he met some of the old timers of Cojimar and listened intently to their seafaring tales, over drinks.
Hemingway's novella, 'The Old Man and the Sea', published in 1952, was set in Cuba, and tells the tale of an old Cuban fisherman.
It would earn Hemingway the 1953 Pulitzer Prize and, later, the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Tourists travel from the four corners of the world to get a glimpse of La Terraza, with its beautiful views of the sea from its windows.
Before heading out to sea, the fishermen pass in front of Cojimar's monument to Hemingway, making sure that future generations will always remember Hemingway.
The bust sits prominently in the town's square overlooking the bay.
It was commissioned one year after his death and is made entirely of bronze propellers donated by the local fishermen and melted down to create the sculpture.
In November 2002, Fidel Castro visited Hemingway's former home in Havana, the Finca de Vigia (Lookout Farm in Spanish), along with Hemingway's granddaughter, Hillary Hemingway, and signed accords with U.S. scholars to preserve the author's letters and manuscripts left at the home.
American and Cuban experts collaborate on the restoration and preservation of 2,000 letters, 3,000 personal photographs and some draft fragments of novels and stories that were kept in the humid basement of Finca Vigia.
Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the joint effort by the New York-based Social Science Research Council and the Cuban National Council of Patrimony produces mircofilm copies of the material, restores some documents damaged by the Caribbean climate, and helps conserve the house, including a 9,000-volume library and Hemingway's fishing boat, Pilar.
The microfilm copies are stored at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, but originals stay at the Hemingway Museum at Finca Vigia, long a source of pride for Cuba.

STORYLINE
Six look-alikes of famed US author Ernest Hemingway celebrated his legacy on Saturday with a visit to the town in Cuba that inspired his award-winning novel The Old Man and the Sea.
The Hemingway look-alikes, from the United States and Canada, were visiting the island for the 14th International Hemingway Colloquium.
Hemingway's legacy is strongly felt in Cuba and nowhere more so than in the small fishing village of Cojimar, just 8 kilometres (5 miles) east of the capital Havana.
Cojimar is also the town that inspired The Old Man and the Sea.
Locals there affectionately named Hemingway Papa and it's where he spent much of his time and kept his boat.
That's also where one of Hemingway's favourite bars is located, La Terraza.
Now, more than 50 years after his suicide, local villagers flock to this bar to get a glimpse of Papa's likeness in the faces of visiting foreigners.
It's heart-warming because everybody here respects Ernest Hemingway. And I respect Ernest Hemingway. And one of the things that attracted me to him was that I found the compassion in the man, said Brian Sinclair, a Canadian actor who travels the world with his one-man show Hemingway on Stage.
La Terraza has become a Hemingway shrine, with photographs and tributes to the US writer.
These include a photo of Cuba's revolutionary leader Fidel Castro with Ernest Hemingway.
Early in 1950, a group of fishermen from Cojimar asked Hemingway to participate in a fishing tournament that would later carry his name.
In 1960, Fidel Castro participated in the tournament and won.
Hemingway gave Castro a trophy in what is known to be their first and only encounter.
To come here and see Hemingway's Cuba has been a phenomenal experience. It's been just a lifetime experience for me, said Gregory Fawcett, winner of the 2012 Hemingway Look-alike Contest held yearly in Key West, Florida.
The Old Man and the Sea, published in 1952, was written in Cuba, with a Cuban plot and Cuban characters.
A short novel about an old Cuban fisherman, it earned Hemingway the 1953 Pulitzer Journalism Prize and, later, the Nobel Prize.
Hemingway left Cuba in the early days of Fidel Castro's revolution, never to return.

STORYLINE
The annual Hemingway Fishing Tournament continued on Sunday off the shores of the fishing village of Cojimar with boats and crews trawling the waters for sailfish.
There is no prize money on offer - the foreign and local fishermen are purely competing for the prestigious Hemingway Tournament Trophy.
Locals say the first marlin fishing tournament was organised in Cuba by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club in 1938, and four years later it was followed by the Havana Yacht Club.
Early in 1950, a group of fishermen from Cojimar asked the American writer to collaborate with the tournament that would later carry his name.
In 1960, Cuban leader Fidel Castro participated in the tournament and won. Hemingway gave Castro a trophy in what is known to be their first and only encounter.

Before heading out to sea, the fishermen march in a children's parade in front of Cojimar's monument to their most famous guest.

This is where it is said he gathered inspiration to write The Old Man and the Sea after having met some of the old timers of Cojimar over mojitos and daiquiris and listened intently to their seafaring tales.

Around the harbor was one of the most sought after cities in the New World, Old Town during the past few hundred years. Large, well-built buildings tell of the time phase. However, Havana now is better than moderate discomfort uncluttered convenience and outdated view that older people find places. Armas square is also one of them. If weekends and holidays, this square is transformed into a bookstall Street. It sold a lot of books containing the music magazines such as Che Guevara and the Cuban colors. The open-air cafes where tourists gather without fail when in Havana and has another song. Wherever people live on the stage and sing also change from time to time. Everybody sing bright and cheerful song. Another specialty are the pictures of models in Havana. Dress from the extraordinary. If you try to take a photo standing next to imperceptibly. Sell the same flowers or dolls but their main objective is the tip. There are those who are not worth every penny as a tip hangarak song.

========= (954) 646 8246 and I'll take your number so Mario can contact you.
My friend Mario Llorente is a remarkable tour organizer. He begins with a question... What can you bring and share with the people of Cuba?
He will be happy to ask, What do you want to see? but he really wants to know What do you want to share? Why? Because the strongst memories I have of Cuba are the moments when locals were asking me questions. They are universally curious and interested in life outside the Island... and they want to share what they know about their passions, too.
This video gives you a tour of the highlights of my visit to Habana.
The harbor, the major fort
the beaches to the east,
the Malecón
taking photos of people and hearing the question, Can you send that photo to my cousin in Miami?
how can we serve each other?
The Cemetery, Ernest Hemingway's home (the estate with a view)
Old Havana, sharing coffee with university students
What do you want to share?
I wanted to share what I had found on the internet and two dozen students at the Foreign Language department of the university of Havana sat through four workshops in April 2013. What an honor to be in a room with students who did not check email or facebook updates on their mobile phones... why? because nobody had smartphones in the room. The students were there to hear what I had to share.
They spoke and understood English and they gave me lots of their attention. If you have a passion, perhaps you want to share it with a group in Havana.... and Mario Llorente can arrange to find that group for you.
