Algonquin Park - Hemlock Bluff & Bat Lake Trails - Episode 4
#Algonquin #camping #hiking #trails
Thanks for watching our fourth video in our Algonquin Park 2018 series.
In this video, we take you along on two separate trails along Highway 60, Hemlock Bluff and Bat Lake Trail. During our hikes, we saw only a few other hikers, compared to some of the shorter, more popular trails.
Hemlock Bluff Trail is 3.5 kilometres long with a spectacular view of Jack Lake from a lookout along a cliff. There are some fairly steep areas but it is well worth the effort.
Bat Lake Trail is 5 kilometres long and starts and ends with flat sections of sandy pine trees. Several steep sections can be challenging, especially if it is slippery from the rain. A beautiful meandering river falls down the hillside and along the way there are wonderful vistas. Bat Lake itself is a quiet, secluded spot that often floods the trails and boardwalks but it is peaceful if the biting insects don't get you! Don't let the water fool you though, it's quite acidic and not for drinking, fishing or swimming.
Each of Algonquin's trails is unique and enjoyable to hike depending on your physical abilities and how long you want to take. Every trail has opportunities for stopping to take breaks, whether there is a bench, a rock, or a tree root to sit on. Bring water, a snack or your lunch and enjoy the trails at Algonquin Park!

-20 Degree Winter Hiking at Algonquin Hemlock Bluff Trail
A week before this trip, I was planning to do an overnight winter camping, until all of a sudden...a severe weather warning hit Algonquin. Still, we decided to do a day hike instead and take some winter pictures in Algonquin.
The trip turned out pretty solid, including dancing and sliding across the frozen lake (Jack Lake). This trail is quite easy and great for a day hike, and you could probably fit another trail if you hike in a modest speed.
Enjoy guys!

Bat Lake Hiking Trail, Algonquin Park - Winter Hiking
Bat Lake Trail is located at kilometre 30.0 on Highway 60 in Algonquin Provincial Park.
Bat Lake is a 5.6 km loop trail that introduces you to basic Algonquin Park ecology while visiting a beautiful hemlock stand, a fine lookout, and acidic Bat Lake.
On the day we visited in early February, there was under 30 cm of snow on the ground. The previous day was warm and rainy, so there was a thin crust of ice on the snow and fantastic cascades of ice clung to the cliffs on either side of the steep ravine near the west end of the trail.

Two Rivers Trail: Algonquin Park Fall Colours 2018 Family Hiking
We enjoyed hiking the Two Rivers Trail. It's a fairly easy 2.3 km loop that includes a short ascent to a pine-clad cliff with fall views. Elowyn is 22 months and loved singing and hiking on this trip to Algonquin.

The Mizzy Lake Trail at Algonquin Provincial Park
A video I made of my visit to the Mizzy Lake Trail in Algonquin Provincial Park in Southern Ontario.
Even though it was late April there was still a lot of snow on the ground which made for slippery and wet trails.
I didn't get a chance to hike the whole trail because at one point I kept falling up to my knees and waist in the snow and I only had shorts on! Snowshoes would have surprisingly been a good idea.
At the end of the video you'll be able to see two of the moose I was able to catch a glimpse of during my drive home.
Keep up with me online!
