Bonjour, aujourd'hui je vous présente la jolie ville basque du bord de mer, la ville d'Hendaye, elle se situe à la limite de la frontière entre la France et l'Espagne le plus au Sud Ouest possible de la France.

Hendaye fait face à Irun en Espagne : les deux villes sont séparées par le fleuve Bidasoa. D’ailleurs à Hendaye, un tiers des habitants sont espagnols. Ancien village dédié à la pêche et l’agriculture, Hendaye est maintenant une station balnéaire très prisée notamment grâce à l’arrivée du chemin de fer. Cette époque s’illustre par deux bâtiments face à la plage : l’ancien grand hôtel Eskualduna, et l’ancien casino de la ville, de style mauresque. Puis on trouve sur le front de mer de nombreuses grandes maisons, inspirées du style espagnol. Enfin, si autrefois la circulation entre Espagne et France était parfois compliquée à cause des douanes, aujourd’hui et depuis la fin du 20ème siècle, le traité de Schengen a facilité tout cela …

Places to see in ( Hendaye - France )

Hendaye is the last town that you come to before reaching Spain when travelling along the coast of south-west France, known as the Cote d'Argent. The town stands on the right bank of the Bidassoa river that marks the frontier with Spain. The small island in the river, the Ile des Faisans, was an important border location for several centuries, culminating in the Treaty of the Pyrenees being signed on the island in 1659. The Treaty finally brought to an end the centuries of conflict between France and Spain in the border regions. One curious result - the island itself (which is uninhabited) alternates every six months between being French territory and Spanish territory.

Hendaye has been a historically important frontier town for many centuries and is more of a year-round town than many along the coast. The resort part of Hendaye has a long sandy beach that is popular with sunbathers and windsurfers alike. At the northern end of the beach there is a rocky promontory providing some shelter for the beach and an attractive backdrop. There are perhaps rather more high-rise apartments behind parts of the beach in Hendaye than in some of the more recently developed resorts further north up the coast, but there are also a good number of belle-epoque villas to be seen.

The more developed part of Hendaye seafront is to the east, while the traditional villas are mostly further west along the Boulevard de la Mer. A pedestrian promenade follows most of the length of the beach. There are also some features of historical interest in Hendaye such as the Great Cross of Hendaye in the main square. The church of Saint-Vincent, built in the 16th century, is the centre of the town. The unusual moorish style of the building that was originally Hendaye Casino is also interesting.

The pleasure and fishing port is also a pleasant place to explore: it is behind the town and beach in a small area in the large bay formed by the river estuary: just keep following the Boulevard de la Mer westwards and you will find it. The most interesting part of the town itself is on the hill behind the seafront, with views across the sea and also to the Pyrenees that start just inland.

Hendaye est aussi connue pour être un excellent spot de surf ! Un domaine que connaît bien Jean-Louis puisqu’il est shaper, c’est-à-dire qu’il fabrique des planches, et ce depuis plus de 40 ans. Avant d’être utilisée, la planche est un gros bloc de mousse polyuréthane qui lui sert à dessiner les contours de la future planche grâce à des gabarits. Chaque planche est unique, selon les demandes du client, et les humeurs de Jean-Louis !

In 1940, Ramón Serrano Súñer, Francisco Franco, Adolf Hitler and Joachim von Ribbentrop met in the Hendaye railway station (German-occupied France) to discuss Spain's involvement in World War II. No agreement was reached and Spain remained neutral during the following five years of the war.

Hendaya es una localidad fronteriza francesa del departamento de Pirineos Atlánticos.
Se sitúa en el territorio de la antigua provincia de Labort, junto a la frontera con España y a 21 km de San Sebastián. El nombre significa Bahía Grande.
La ciudad es un importante puerto pesquero y cuenta con una estación de ferrocarril internacional.
En el puerto se encuentra la sede de Tribord, la marca de deportes acuáticos de Decathlon.
Entre los atractivos de la localidad, destaca un balneario, famoso en toda la región. Alrededor del 50% de las viviendas pertenecen a guipuzcoanos.
Es conocida históricamente por ser la ciudad donde se entrevistaron Franco y Hitler en 1940.
Limita al norte con el mar Cantábrico , al este y al sur con Urruña y al oeste con el río Bidasoa y la Bahía de Txingudi , que la separa de España (Irún y Fuenterrabía).

Located a few hundred meters from Spain, Hendaye is one of the most important seaside destinations in Pays Basque in France. We find the most beautiful beaches of the Cote Basque stretching over close to three kilometers along the seafront between sand and typical Basque houses, between the harbor and the twin rocks. A large pool of water is available for those who love to sail.

Note that Hendaye is reputed for having the calmest beaches on the Cote Basque thanks to the protection of Cap Figuier and the pointe Sainte Anne. The beaches benefit from a very feeble incline that allows easy swimming, even for young children. A kid's club is available as well.

Hendaye is also a thalassotherapy center reputed on the seafront, near the harbor. For those who would like to alternate beaches and hiking trips, Hendaye is the ideal destination: coastal path, trail in the bay of Txingudi or the summet of the Rhune with its enchanting view of the Cote Basque.

À la frontière avec l’Espagne, la ville a un long passé d’accueil de réfugiés : en 1936, alors que la commune ne comptait que 4 500 âmes, 10 000 républicains espagnols fuyant la guerre civile débarquèrent sur ce petit port. Aujourd’hui, Hendaye accueille eux familles syriennes épaulées quotidiennement par de nombreux bénévoles.
