Lingtong Temple: The most beautiful hanging temple
Lingtong Temple: The most beautiful hanging temple
Like the Xuankong Temple in Hengshan Mountain, the Lingtong Temple in Pinghe County is hanging too.It was built on craggy mountain, perching on cliff of the Qingtian Peak of the Mountain.
You must be shocked by the building on the crag. Though it is not as famous as the Xukong Temple, as it hides in scenic Lingtong Mountain, it is a wonderful place for tour. Built in the Tang Dynasty, the temple covers 910 square meters and embraces a southern pond of spring. Since its founding, pilgrim has swarmed there. What's more, in ancient time 7 scholars had lecture there.
The miraculous scene is that after rain, sunshine produces rainbow surrounding the temple, as it has water curtain falling from protruding crag above the temple because the mountain rocks, formed by volcano, are porous.

Xuan Kong Si - Monasterio Colgante Hanging Temple Monastery Jinlong Heng Hunyuan Datong Shanxi China

The closest city is Datong, 65 kilometers to the northwest.
Along with the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area.
Built more than 1,500 years ago, this temple is notable not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements.
It looks dangerous. The main supportive structure was hidden
According to the history of Hengshan Mountain, construction of the temple started at the end of the Northern Wei Dynasty by only one man, a monk named Liao Ran 了然.
Over a history of more than 1,600 years many repairs and extension led to its present day scale.

Xiahe and the Labrang Tibetan Buddhist Monastery
Xiahe
14 - 16 October 2016
Xiahe was the fourth location of our China Tour. After Beijing and Xi’an it is really a small village located in the foothills of the Himalaya. Xiahe was a part of Tibet for a long time. The population of Xiahe is mostly Tibetan. Most of the people are still dressed traditional. The purpose of our visit to Xiahe is off course the famous Labrang Tibetan Buddhist Monastery.
The Labrang Monastery is one the biggest and the most important Buddhist monastery outside the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Labrang Monastery is important for the people of Xiahe and of all the Buddhists in the region. However the monastery is popular for pilgrims as well. There are about 1400 monks in the monastery. That is more than what is allowed in a monastery in Lhasa, the former capitol of Tibet, and still the most important place of the Tibetan Buddhism.
We arrived in Xiahe in the afternoon. We had still some time to walk the Kora. The Kora is a meditative practice of the Tibetan Buddhists. They walk rounds around a sacred object or place. In the Labrang Monastery the walk around the monastery is 3km and counts 1174 prayer wheels. Usually they walk the Kora 3 times. Beside the 3km Kora, the Tibetan Buddhists walk Koras around a lot of other holy objects in the monastery. You also see some Buddhist prostrating. Some people are prostrating on one place. However you see them also prostrating the Kora of 3 km.
The next day we visited the inside of the Labrang Monastery and made a nice hike in the mountains near Xiahe.
The Labrang Monastery is of the Gelug school, also named Yellow caps. The next day we visited a monastery near Zuohaicun, north of Xiahe. The monks over there are called Black caps. But they were yellow caps as well. Maybe it is better to keep the Tibetan name: Karmapa. The black caps are walking the Kora as well. However they walk counterclockwise instead of clockwise.
At last we visited the town of Ka'ernangcun. The town has a 2200 years old city wall. Ka'ernangcun is situated in the Grasslands north of Xiahe. We drunk some hot Yak milk and eat some Tsampa.

【HD】Driving from Fenghuang Ancient City to Changsha South Railway Station On September 9, 2019.
I drove a car from Fenghuang Ancient City to Changsha South Railway Station On September 9, 2019.
Fenghuang Ancient Town, aka Phoenix Ancient Town and Feng Huang Gu Cheng in Chinese, is situated on the western boundary of Hunan Province in an area of outstanding natural beauty where mountains, water and blue skies prevail. 'Fenghuang' is Chinese for 'Phoenix', the mythical bird of good omen and longevity that is consumed by fire to be re-born again from the flames.
Changsha is the capital of Hunan Province, China.
Hanging Monastery (Xuankong Si), Datong, China. 6 hours by train out of Beijing
Hanging Monastery stands at the cliff of Mt. Hengshan, 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of Hunyuan County, and 65 kilometers (40 miles) from downtown Datong City. Since it hangs on the west cliff of Jinxia Gorge more than 50 meters above the ground, it is called Hanging Temple Monastery.
Built in 491, it has survived more than 1400 years. The monastery was largely rebuilt and maintained in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Hanging Monastery, Datong Sculpture of Sakyamuni and Confucius!!!
How could a building like this withstand the winds and storms of so many years? Hanging Monastery is an architectural wonder. A unique mechanical theory was applied to building the framework. Crossbeams were half-inserted into the rock as the foundation, while the rock in back became its support. Seen from below, it appears to be a tumble-down castle in the air. Inside, it provides the same scene as other temples.
Construction experts from countries including Britain,Germany, and Italy, come to see the monastery. In their words, Hanging Monastery, which mixes mechanics, aesthetics, and Buddhism, is rare. The architecture and everything it symbolizes embodies a great cultural achievement of Chinese people.
The second attraction of Hanging Monastery is that it includes Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Inside the monastery, the sculptures of Sakyamuni, Confucius and Laotzu appear together, which is unusual. There are 40 halls and cabinets, which contain about 80 sculptures made of copper, iron, terracotta, and stone. The features are vividly carved.
Why build a monastery like this? Location is the first reason; building a monastery on the cliff could shield it from floods. In addition, the mountain peak protects it from rain and snow; and the mountain around it also diminishes damage from long-time sunshine. The second reason is that the builders followed a principle in Taoism: no noises, including those from rooster crowing and dog barking; so from the upper ground, all noises drop away.

Datong Great Wall
About 400km west of Beijing, the ancient Datong was one of the Nine Frontier Important Towns in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), maintaining the 335km Great Wall within Datong and defending against the Mongol raiders. Datong Great Wall was an important part of the Wall's central section from the Yellow River to the passes leading to Beijing, vital to the defense of both central China and Beijing.
