Oral History Interview with Scott Henry
This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rachael Cristine Woody with Scott Henry of Henry Estate Winery. The interview took place at Henry Estate Winery on June 7, 2013 and covered topics including early wine industry history in Douglas County and the recounting of Scott Henry's involvement in the industry.
In the interview, Henry describes what led to his invention of the Scott Henry Trellis system, used worldwide. Henry remembers Richard Sommer and the early winemakers of the area, and he discusses how he has seen Southern Oregon develop in terms of community and identity.

Oregon State University Hall of Fame Inductee Scott Henry
Aeronautical Engineer turned Winery Owner Scott Henry was Inducted into Oregon State University Engineering School's Hall of Fame. This is a grand honor as less than 1% of the graduates are even inducted in.
Scott Henry who was born and raised in the town of Umpqua, Oregon, just outside of Roseburg, Oregon, graduated from Roseburg High and then went on to attend Oregon State University.
Scott graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, and received his Master's degree in 1959. Upon completion of his college education he moved to Sacramento, California to pursue a career as a Aeronautical Engineer working 13 years for Aerojet General. While in California he developed a friendship with Geno Zepponi, one of the original founders of ZD winery and Scott's appreciation of wine truly began.
In 1972 Scott and Geno returned to the family homestead and turned it from a prune orchard to what it is today the home of Henry Estate Winery. Always thinking and utilizing his engineering background Scott began experimenting with different styles of trellising the grapes. By the early 1980's the Scott Henry Trellis system was born and is now being used world wide.
Congratulations Hall of Fame Member Scott Henry!!!

A Tale of Three Fiddles - Part II
Tale of Three Fiddles presented by Shannon Applegate, Linda Danielson and Douglas Johnson at the historic Applegate House in Yoncalla, OR. on Aug 24, 2013. The three fiddles include the until-recently lost fiddle (the Henry Lane or Hen Lane fiddle), and two made in its image by George Buck Applegate for his beautiful identical twin daughters, Eva and Evea.
Until now, probably the only person to have played all three is Buck Applegate, who was born in 1852 (same year the house was built) and died in 1932. He crafted the twin fiddles in 1895, 21 years after the Hen Lane fiddle left Applegate House.
On Aug 24, 2013, at Heritage Music Day at the Applegate House, the three fiddles were reunited.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the seat of Multnomah County. It is a major port in the Willamette Valley region of the Pacific Northwest, at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of 2017, Portland had an estimated population of 647,805, making it the 26th-largest city in the United States, and the second-most populous in the Pacific Northwest (after Seattle). Approximately 2.4 million people live in the Portland metropolitan statistical area (MSA), making it the 25th most populous MSA in the United States. Its Combined Statistical Area (CSA) ranks 18th-largest with a population of around 3.2 million. Approximately 60% of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metropolitan area.Named after Portland, Maine, the Oregon settlement began to be populated in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its water access provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city's early economy. At the turn of the 20th century, the city had a reputation as one of the most dangerous port cities in the world, a hub for organized crime and racketeering. After the city's economy experienced an industrial boom during World War II, its hard-edged reputation began to dissipate. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland became noted for its growing progressive political values, earning it a reputation as a bastion of counterculture. The city operates with a commission-based government guided by a mayor and four commissioners as well as Metro, the only directly elected metropolitan planning organization in the United States. The city government is notable for its land-use planning and investment in public transportation. Portland is frequently recognized as one of the world's most environmentally conscious cities because of its high walkability, large community of bicyclists, farm-to-table dining, expansive network of public transportation options, and over 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) of public parks. Its climate is marked by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. This climate is ideal for growing roses, and Portland has been called the City of Roses for over a century.
