Places to see in ( Heidelberg - Germany )
Places to see in ( Heidelberg - Germany )
Heidelberg is a town on the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. It’s known for venerable Heidelberg University, founded in the 14th century. Gothic Heiliggeistkirche church towers over the cafe-lined Marktplatz, a town square in the Altstadt (Old Town). The red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a noted example of Renaissance architecture, stand on Königstuhl hill.
Surrounded by forest, Germany’s oldest and most famous university town is renowned for its baroque Altstadt, beautiful riverside setting and evocative half-ruined hilltop castle, which draw 11.9 million visitors a year. They follow in the footsteps of the late 18th- and early 19th-century romantics, most notably the poet Goethe and Britain’s William Turner, who was inspired by Heidelberg to paint some of his greatest landscapes.
In 1878, Mark Twain began his European travels with a three-month stay in Heidelberg, recounting his observations in A Tramp Abroad (1880). Heidelberg's rich literary history, along with its thriving contemporary scene, saw it named a Unesco City of Literature in 2014. Heidelberg’s Altstadt has a red-roofed townscape of remarkable architectural unity. After having been all but destroyed by French troops under Louis XIV (1690s), it was rebuilt during the 18th century. Unlike many German cities, it emerged from WWII almost unscathed.
It is home to Germany's oldest university, as well as to numerous others, and to a host of internationally renowned research institutes and research-based companies. The International Building Exhibition (IBA) shows the city and the scientific community working together even more closely in the future.
About 11.8 million visitors from all over the world come to the city each year. The population, too, is international: an estimated 45,000 of Heidelberg's inhabitants have an immigrant background – many of them are scientists and students. The combination of attractive countryside, favorable climate and urban lifestyle makes Heidelberg one of the leading cities in Germany in terms of leisure value.
First mentioned in 1196, Heidelberg was planned and built, together with the castle, in the 13th century. Heidelberg's heyday as the capital of the Electoral Palatinate began not least with the foundation of the university – today the oldest in Germany – in 1386. Heidelberg was one of the few major German cities to be largely spared the destruction of the World War II.

History
This American base has a long history. The Americans first got there in 1945, around the end of World War II. By the time the Germans were falling, the city became the host of multiple regiments in the area. The zone remained under American occupation for a few years after World War II ended as well. With all these, many of the historical and cultural buildings remained intact and can be seen and appreciated these days too.
The objectives and roles of this base didn’t change too much in time, except for the technologies and techniques used. The same goes for the total number of units. There are currently a little over 16,000 individuals living and working at Heidelberg, including the soldiers’ families.
Objective
The USAG Heidelberg initial objectives were to secure the area, as the Germans were falling down by the end of World War II. Today, the base is an important European base for the Americans. Its main role is to recruit and train individuals for the potential upcoming operations. The new recruits are trained and prepared by both German and American superiors.
Facilities
The local facilities are more than complete for every new inhabitant. The most important programs imply protection driven and customizable army based tests and preparations through the ACS (Army Community Service). It tests the units’ readiness, as well as their stability and resilience.
Other than that, the residents also have access to artistic and cultural activities, especially through the Roadside Theater. Every citizen is encouraged to participate to auditions and acts. It is usually a volunteering opportunity for those who look forward to discover their artistic side. But this is not all. Games and bowling fans have their entertainment places too, as well as the golf players. The same goes for those who like to hang out in bars or clubs.
When it comes to kids, USAG Heidelberg is able to provide a complete educational program in schools and high-schools, not to mention about the libraries.
The more encouraging part about living in the camp is the tax reduction. The PHV office deals with tax relief operations. In other words, the camp is more like a little community with everything a real city would require to prosper.
Housing
The housing system at USAG Heidelberg is limited and restricted to the workers and their families only. Just like most bases established on foreign territories, this one has a limit for the total number of inhabitants. Therefore, it is less likely for a worker’s family to live at a hotel. If new soldiers arrive, others will leave. However, the first few days are usually spent at a hotel, until all the paperwork is done. The system is efficient and makes everyone happy.

Former Military Housing Site To Be Given Futuristic Makeover
A former military housing estate in Germany is to be given a new lease of life. Patrick Henry Village near Heidelberg was where American Forces lived for sixty years until 2013. Now architects hope to transform it into a world leading, cutting edge urban development. The vision for the old military housing estate is an architecturally exciting city district. It would be based on small-scale mainly digital enterprises in what’s called the sharing economy. For the latest on forces news, come to

Oktoberfest | Flohmarkt | Altebrücke in Heidelberg Germany | Ilonggo Me Vlog #9
We travelled to Heidelberg in Germany and got to experience what seemed to be an Oktoberfest with beer drinking and fun fair, but we're not really sure. We also stumbled upon an even with people dressed in fancy clothes from a certain era. The place actually looked like a setting in Game of Thrones. Then we passed by a huge Flohmarkt with display of antiques and interesting second-hand items for sale, we didn't buy anything but it surely was fun too look around. We really intended to visit the famous old bridge (Alte Brücke), which we did, and it was beautiful. It is one of the best-known landmarks and tourist destinations in Heidelberg. It's an arch bridge that crosses the Neckar river and from which you can have a wonderful view of the Heidelberg castle.
