Cascades Female Factory Hobart | Walking Tour | Steadicam
Hobart's Cascade Female Factory is an intimidating place. My Great Great Grandmother went through this system in the 1830's. It was quite an experience to walk where she walked.

Cascade Female Factory:
The Cascades Female Factory is Australia’s most significant historic site associated with female convicts. It was a purpose built, self-contained institution intended to reform female convicts and is the place to discover the stories of Australia’s convict women.
Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, and many never left, due to high rates of illness and infant mortality. Visiting the site today can be both emotional and rewarding, creating a connection with the stories of female convicts in Australia and their children – stories that are often tragic, but that also inspire hope and resilience.
It is located in South Hobart, a short distance from the Hobart waterfront and CBD

never-ending story(314) - drunken admiral restaurent, hobart, australia 19/1/16
while my guitar gently weeps
======================
the drunken admiral is not drunk on spirit(alcohol), but drunk on his own reminiscence....
those days, on every valentine's day they would be at this little restaurant having a meal of simple food and joyous conversation, while the background music gently wept. and that's when they both fell in love with the song while my guitar gently weeps, by george harrison.
especially the version that's recorded with eric clapton as the lead guitarist playing with LUCY, the Gibson Les Paul electric guitar that eric gave to george as a gift(some said as a token to thank george for intrududing eric to george's wife, pattie boyd, whom eric married later)...
this song was conceived as told by the song writer:
I wrote 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' at my mother's house in Warrington … I was thinking about the Chinese I Ching, 'The Book of Changes … The Eastern concept is that whatever happens is all meant to be, and that there's no such thing as coincidence – every little item that's going down has a purpose. 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' was a simple study based on that theory. I decided to write a song based on the first thing I saw upon opening any book – as it would be relative to that moment, at that time. I picked up a book at random, opened it, saw gently weeps, then laid the book down again and started the song.
now what does YICHING say about gently weeps (泣)?
there are two GUA's in YICHING that the word 泣 appears. the first one is the 屯卦
top-6: riding on a horse, circling on the same spot, getting anxious. weeping furiously with blood incessantly.
which does not quite fit into george's situation when he wrote the song.
but the other GUA does:
61 ZHONG FU GUA(trust and sincerity)
with trust and sincerity, holding a ceremony with pig and fish, though simple, is auspicious.good to travel far, and he who persevere's prevails.
1st-9: single-heartedly doing one thing is auspicious. otherwise, will be anxious and restive.
9-2: the chicks resonate with the call of the mother crane from a hidden place. the good wines i have, i have you to share with.
6-3: having an enemy, makes one restless. hesitating on whether to attack the enemy or make peace with him. hesitating on weeping out laud or just let it go with a song.
6-4: the moon is getting full, when the horse is lost. but no blame.
9-5: with trust and sincerity toward one anather, no guilt.
top-9: the chicken has flown to the sky. persistence would be disastrous.
this fits snuggly into the triangular relationship among george, pattie boyd and eric clapton, as in wikipedia:
In the late 1960s, Clapton and Harrison became close friends, and began writing and recording music together. At this time Clapton fell in love with Boyd. His 1970 album with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, was written to proclaim his love for her, particularly the hit song Layla. When Boyd rebuffed his advances late that year, Clapton descended into heroin addiction and self-imposed exile for three years. Boyd moved in with Clapton and married him in 1979. Her struggles within the marriage were masked by her public image with Clapton. Boyd drank, and admits to past drug use, but she never became a drug addict like Clapton did.[44] Boyd left Clapton in September 1984, and divorced him in 1988.
bottom-line is george and eric had been friends all thru this love entanglement. friendship is based on trust and sincerity.....
also, in relationship, sometimes you need to persevere and at times you need to know when to let go. like the song says: what is yours is yours....

Here is Carina just after a tour around the Cascades Female factory in Hobart. It was a very enlightening (and emotional) tour. This was a place where female convicts were incarcerated on arrival in Tasmania. And life was not pretty for them!

The Story in Australia
The Australia Regional brought a weekend of surprises. While Games veterans Ruth Anderson Horrell and Chad Mackay failed to qualify, returning competitor Denae Brown took first overall for the women, and Rob Forte stood atop the men's podium for the second consecutive year.
Games spots were up for grabs all weekend.
When you look at this Leaderboard, it's becoming very clear that Australia is just as competitive as any other region out there, said CrossFit Games Update host Sean Woodland.
Returning to defend her title as regional champion, Kara Webb nabbed first-place finishes in Events 1 and 3 but knew that didn't mean a thing.
There's a lot of workouts to still be done, she said with a grin on Day 2.
Brown—who was back from pregnancy and a year away from competition—finished second and fourth on Day 3 to take top spot on the women's podium. Webb was second, and Pip Malone finished third.
Fan favorite Mackay had a rough Day 1, picking up 22 points on Event 2.
Today's just about effort ... . I know I'm gonna put in my best effort, and hopefully I'm gonna climb back up that Leaderboard, Mackay said on Day 2.
Despite the effort, Mackay was not able to overtake Forte, Games vet Brandon Swan and Khan Porter, who will make his first Games appearance.

Port Arthur | Tasmania Travel Diary
A beautiful place with a tragic past. Port Arthur is one of Australia’s most important heritage sites - an 1830s penal settlement where convicts from England were worked to the bone and punished in appalling prisons. But in November last year, there was a quiet calm to the place - the striking stone ruins were bathed in spring sun and the Governor’s garden was in full bloom.
Port Arthur is also an infamous, painful memory for modern Australians as the site of our first and only mass shooting massacre in 1996. The horrifying events led to the introduction of gun control laws and we have not had a single mass shooting since. This visit was a timely reminder of how lucky Australians are to live in a country that took immediate steps to end gun violence.

Witness to Bob Chappell murder breaks 10 year silence | 60 Minutes Australia
Meaghan Vass has lived a wretched existence. For half of her 25 years her home has been the streets, where she mixed with the wrong crowd and became addicted to heavy drugs. But as down and out as she is, Meaghan could be the most important witness in Tasmania’s most controversial murder case. Nine years ago Sue Neill-Fraser was jailed for the murder of her partner Bob Chappell on their yacht, Four Winds. She has always denied she did it, pleading that she wasn’t even on the boat when he was killed. And that’s where Meaghan Vass comes in. In a 60 MINUTES special investigation she speaks publicly for the first time and admits to being on board the Four Winds at the time of the murder. She tells Liam Bartlett she saw everything, and reveals who killed Bob Chappell and why. Sue Neill-Fraser’s freedom rests on Meaghan Vass’s evidence. But is she believable?

The Story in SoCal
After two weeks of competition in which multiple CrossFit Games veterans failed to qualify, SoCal athletes took the floor at one of the most hotly contested regionals.
Favored to win Event 1—a 1-rep-max hang snatch—Games runner-up Lindsey Valenzuela faltered with 185 lb. overhead, surprising fans.
I didn't like that I missed the 185, Valenzuela said after the event, but that's the way weightlifting works ... that's why it's kind of a fun sport.
Despite putting up a tough fight over the next six events, Valenzuela was not able to edge out rookie individual competitor Lauren Fisher for the third and final qualifying spot. Atop the podium stood Games third-place finisher Valerie Voboril, and Becca Voigt—who will make her seventh consecutive trip to the Games—took second.
The nerves have released. I am just so happy, Voigt said at the end of the weekend. It's so cool to be going back to the Games. I honestly didn't expect that I would be doing that.
On the men's side, Central East transplant Dan Bailey, was sure to shake things up. Having trained with Bailey leading up to the regional, Josh Bridges said he uses the friendly rivalry to keep him going.
There's a lot of good competitors in SoCal, but ... having a guy like Dan to train with is just an extra push that you always need in the gym sometimes when you're just not feelin' it, Bridges said.
At the end of Day 3, Bridges and Bailey took the second and third spots on the podium, respectively, and Kenneth Leverich stood on top.
