Restoration of the historic Citadel in Herat (NATO and Afghanistan)
An insight into the restoration project of one of Afghanistan's most impressive historic sites: the Herat Citadel -- dating back to Alexander the Great.
We look at the importance of Afghanistan's historic sites and the restoration work being commenced by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Afghanistan. Ajmal Maiwandi, the Chief Executive Officer for the trust, based in Kabul, explains a little bit about the history of the Herat Citadel, and why it is important for the future of Afghanistan to make culture and history accessible in this way. Abdul Ghaffoor Sheikhzada, Director of the National Museum of Herat (housed inside the Citadel), gives a tour of the site explaining some of the more detailed points of historic interest.

The Citadel of Herat - قلعه اختیارالدین (ارگ) هرات
Herat, in the fertile valley of Hari River (Hari Rud), was settled as early as the sixth century BC. A mound located to the north of the Old City, known as Kuhandazh may have been the site of the fort that Alexander the Great built in 330 BC following his conquest of the Achaemenid city known as Artacoana or Aria. After the depart of Alexander, Herat was ruled by the Seleucids, Parthians, Kushans, Sasanians, Hephthalites, Umayyads, Tahirids, Saffarids, Samanids, Seljuk, Ghaznavids, and Ghurids.

The Citadel of Herat (Persian: ارگ هرات, Pashto سکندرۍ کلا), also known as the Citadel of Alexander, and locally known as Qala Iktyaruddin (Persian: قلعه اختیارالدین), is located in the center of Herat in Afghanistan. It dates back to 330 BC, when Alexander the Great and his army arrived to what is now Afghanistan after the Battle of Gaugamela. Many empires have used it as a headquarters in the last 2,000 years, and was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries.

History of Herat Arg

Herāt (Persian: هرات) is a city in western Afghanistan, in the province also known as Herāt. It is situated just north of, and in the valley of, the Hari Rud, a river flowing from the mountains of central Afghanistan to the Kara-Kum Desert in Turkmenistan. Situated in a fertile river valley, Herāt was traditionally known for its wine. It is the third largest city of Afghanistan, with a population of 249,000 (2002 official estimate). The main inhabitants of the city are Farsiwans[1], although in many sources they are generally referred to as Tajiks[2][3].
Herat is an ancient city with many historic buildings, although these have suffered damage in various military conflicts during the last few decades. The city is dominated by the remains of a citadel constructed under the rule of Alexander of Macedon. Herāt is situated favourably on the ancient and historic trade routes of India, China, the Middle East, and Europe. The roads from Herāt to Iran, Turkmenistan, Mazari Sharif and Kandahar are still strategically important.
Herat was one of the important cities of Khorasan and known as the Pearl of Khorasan.

Connecting Past with Future at Herat Citadel
The citadel, dating back to the times of Alexander the Great, has undergone extensive restoration with support from the international community and now houses Herat National Museum which was opened to the public in 2011.
This shows that the Afghan nation has a great past, and I think it shows also that the Afghan nation has an enormous potential, says Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann, NATO's Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, having visited the Qala Ikhtyaruddin in Herat.

Herat's ancient citadel restored (NATO in Afghanistan)
Founded by Alexander the Great in 330 BC, Herat's famous citadel has seen its fair share of war and destruction. But today, the imposing fortification has been completely restored with Afghan and international money and labour and stands as a new symbol of pride in the ancient city.
