Traditional Thai Herbal Sauna/Steam Room at a Wat Sai Ngam Temple in Chanthaburi Thailand
On one of the days of the Raw Vegan Thai Fruit and Adventure Retreat 2017, we went to a traditional Thai Herbal Sauna at a local temple. This is a community run sauna, not for profit, and is a great way to mix with the locals. Smiles all around.
I highly recommend this raw food vegan retreat. Grant Campbell (Raw Aussie Athlete) is an Ultra-Marathon runner than only eats raw fruits and vegetables. Look up his web site and come to this retreat. It will boost your health immediately. It is generally every year in May.

Herbal steam therapy is created by the boiling of a special combination of fresh herbs and essence, proving to benefit both the body and mind.
This sweat inducing therapy reduces tension and releases impurities through the skin as well as clearing the breathing passages.
The steam draws out the essential oils from medicinal herbs such as lemon grass, cassod tree, zingiberaceae.
The benefits of herbal steam
With the temperature between 35 ºC- 45 ºC (95 ºF- 110 ºF), therapy for 10-15 minutes can improve:
1. The Nervous System, reliving pain, stress and promoting sound sleep.

This temple sauna, named Wat Sai Gnam, in Chanthaburi, Thailand, is so amazing. This is a big temple with a meditation retreat center. And there is a Thai massage and herbal sauna/steam room in the back of the building. Tons of herbs. This sauna is entirely heated from wood -- not electric at all. This is a community run sauna, where the donation to use it is suggested at only 30b, and a 54 year old lady takes care of it and even chops all the wood and stokes the fire. For the past week and a half, Nick and I have been traveling non-stop. Once we got to the beautiful town of Chiang Mai, Thailand, we both were both in need of some R&R. I picked up some flyers from our hotel and with a quick cross reference via Trip Advisor. Fah Lanna Spa come with high acclaim. I was very excited about this spa. As a Licensed Massage Therapist, with many years in the high end spa industry. I know a good spa when I experience it!
I booked two spa package (Aromatic Herbal Steam,Facial Treatment, Manicure and Pedicure). They sent a car to our hotel to pick us up (complimentary service provided by the spa) great for us tourist who need a little help getting around. We were dropped off in the front of the Koi pound which alines the outside of Fah Lanna Spa. Once you walk into the Spa, you are truly transported.
Walking into a spa, the one thing I always wait for is the smell. Most spa to tend to over power you with aromatherapy. It can really weigh down the environment. Fah Lanna spa uses a wonderful aromatic blend of essential oils. Very light and inviting, I immediately wanted to know what oils they were using. From its waiting area to the retail section was decorated in traditional Thai art and furniture. The spas reception and waiting area is covered and the walkway to the treatment rooms is totally uncovered, showcasing the beautiful Northern Thailand Sky.
We were greeted by the friendly reception staff and were seated at a decorative Thai table. Upon being seated a delicious passion fruit tea was served. This herbal tea was very aromatic just like the aromatherapy in the spa. After drinking the tea...Im already relaxed. But I couldn't sit down because I wanted to explore the beautiful layout of the Spa. We were soon greeted by our therapist O'Shin and Won.
We were taken to a beautiful treatment room to change and escorted to the Herbal Steam Room. I am a huge fan of steam. I love it for its detoxifying benefits. This herbal steam room help clear our lungs (Thailand smog has to be worse than Los Angeles) and detox our aching muscles. The Steam was very hot. The Technicians come every 10 or so minutes to check on you and give you water. Definitely a great treatment to have after a Massage.
Next we had the Facial Treatment. Its consists of cleaning, exfoliating, purifying mask and moisturizing of the skin. Won did an amazing job. The product they used had a natural base to it. The moisturizer was great ( I was upset to find out that they don't carry it in the spa) Nick and I both agree that it was the best facial we had. Lastly, the manicure and pedicure which was done in there Salon suite (yes, they do hair here too). My manicure and pedicure was good. Cuticles were cut but no exfoliating of the bottom of the feet. Not sure if thats just a thing we do here in the States.
We were escorted back to the treatment room to get dressed and head back to reality. Our technicians, O'Shin and Won were both amazing. They made you feel like the most important person in the spa. Both were good with pressure (very important when doing a facial) and gave us great advice on places and things to do in Chiang Mai. It was hard to leave the spa. We were driven back to our hotel feeling like two noodles. As someone who knows spa very well and who has had some amazing spa treatments. Fah Lanna Spa was an amazing experience from checkin to check out. I can't wait for my next trip to Chiang Mai because I will be visiting there again.
