Silver Whisper City Tour Of A Coruna, Spain
We've been on a port-intensive cruise since departing Southampton last week on Silver Whisper. Each day, we've enjoyed some memorable tours, with only one sea day to rest, and that was on the first full day of the cruise.
So when Silver Whisper docked in the city center of A Coruña on Thursday, we chose a tour that allowed us to sleep in and get a good overview of the city.

The Tower of Hercules is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a peninsula about 2.4 kilometers from the centre of A Coruña, Galicia, in north-western Spain. Until the 20th century, the tower itself was known as the Farum Brigantium.
The Latin word farum is derived from the Greek pharos for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Tower of Hercules structure is 55 metres (180 ft) tall and overlooks the North Atlantic coast of Spain. The structure, almost 1900 years old and renovated in 1791, is the oldest Roman lighthouse in use today. There is a sculpture garden featuring works by Pablo Serrano and Francisco Leiro.
The Tower of Hercules is a National Monument of Spain, and since June 27, 2009, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Tower of Hercules is the second tallest lighthouse in Spain, after the Faro de Chipiona .

Cruise Destination: La Coruna, Spain
Discover the Galician town of La Coruna on Spain's north west coast during a port of call aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Independence of the Seas.
The port town made history in 1588 when the Spanish Armada sailed off to conquer England, which resulted in a humiliated defeat when the Brits retaliated and left La Coruna in ruins.
A prominent landmark, the ancient tower of Hercules is still in use today.

About La Coruña
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This was my first time in La Coruña and I was pleasantly surprised! We got off around 9am and the port city was sleepy but mesmerising. There were ornate buildings, colourful flowers decorating balconies and heaving boxes of fresh strawberries. Which got me thinking... I'm hungry. Again.
So we headed to a small cafe called Momos for some morning Spanish tortilla. Cheap eat, delicious with a perfectly runny centre. Next stop: exploring. We 'ooh-ed' at the María Pita square, 'ahh-ed' at the Tower of Hercules and loved the sea view from the surrounding area before... you got it... we got hungry again.
I read online that La Bombilla was a great spot for tapas. Even better yet, each dish is only €1.10 so I tried caldo gallego (Galician soup broth), gazpacho, spicy sausage, ham croquettes and calamari before it was time to head back on the ship...
AND HAVE MY FAVOURITE DINNER ONBOARD. Not sure how I managed to fit in more food at this point but I managed it for Sabatini's - the onboard speciality Italian restaurant. I'll let the video do the talkin' but from cured meats, seafood pasta, lobster in three ways to an espresso tiramisu (and a bonus limoncello) - it was excellent. I slept extra well that night! Next stop... BILBAO!
Thank you to Princess Cruises for sponsoring this video! I'm still dreaming of the four course dinner at Sabatini's and drooling over that lobster main.. and ice cream stop... and the comfy beds...

Places to see in ( La Coruna - Spain )
A Coruña ( La Coruna ) is a city and municipality of Galicia, Spain. La Coruna is the second-largest city in the autonomous community and seventeenth overall in the country .
La Coruna is the provincial capital of the province of the same name, having also served as political capital of the Kingdom of Galicia from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and as a regional administrative centre between 1833 and 1982, before being replaced by Santiago de Compostela.
A Coruña is a busy port located on a promontory in the entrance of an estuary in a large gulf (the Portus Magnus Artabrorum of the classical geographers) on the Atlantic Ocean. It provides a distribution point for agricultural goods from the region.
A Coruña is located on a peninsula, and its isthmus was at times formed only by a small strip of sand. Erosion and sea currents caused a progressive accumulation of sand, enlarging it to its present dimensions. A Coruña and Christchurch, New Zealand, constitute one of only eight pairs of cities in the world that are almost exactly antipodal.
La Coruna is the site of the Roman Tower of Hercules, a lighthouse which has been in continuous operation since possibly the 2nd century AD. It has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is surrounded by a large public park with a golf course and a former Muslim cemetery. The lighthouse features as the main emblem of the city's flag and coat of arms.
La Coruna is also well known for its characteristic glazed window balconies, called galerías. Originally, this type of structure came about as a naval architecture solution for the challenging weather, particularly designed for rainy days. This fashion started in Ferrol in the 18th century when some of the technicians working for the Royal Dockyards had the idea of using the shape of the back of a war ship in a modern building. Soon afterwards, most sea ports in northern Spain, including the Basque region were adding these glazed window balconies to their city-port houses.
Tourism in A Coruña has increased in recent years to the point of receiving 62 cruise ships a year. The two main beaches of A Coruña (Orzán and Riazor) are located in the heart of the city and are bordered by the promenade above. This location makes them a great attraction for tourists, being also a meeting point for surfers much of the year. Moreover, the city has other beaches like As Lapas, San Amaro, Oza and Matadoiro. These four beaches, along with Riazor and Orzán, were recognized with blue flag certification in 2011. An important holiday is on the night of San Juan / Xan Xoán, celebrated with a massive fireworks celebration, parade, bonfires and the ancient fires on all city beaches well into dawn.
( La Coruna - Spain ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of La Coruna . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in La Coruna - Spain

Check out the Princess Sapphire Cruise we are on:
Our first port of call in Spain was hopping off at the cute little town of La Coruna where the sleepy village was closed for the day - we went for a walk up to the Tower of Hercules - an ancient roman lighthouse still being used thousands of years later.
Next up we headed to Bilbao where we tried our first Spanish tortilla (Spanish omelette) before heading off to to see Dragonstone from Game of Thrones aka Gaztelugatxe - an islet in the Basque countryside.
