Polar bears in peril: The bleak future of the Churchill bears | In-Depth
They are a majestic icon of Canada's North, but polar bears have also come to symbolize climate change. And scientists say the future for one particular population of polar bears in northern Manitoba is dire.
Correction: At 9:52 we mistakenly reported that there hasn't been a birth of polar bear triplets recorded since 1996. In fact, there have been triplet births observed in the spring – but no females with triplets have been seen in the fall.

Tauck Polar Bear Expedition in Manitoba, Canada!
In November 2014, I embarked on a tour with Tauck and the USTOA as an AFAR Ambassador, to Churchill, Manitoba, to see one of the greatest and most majestic creatures on the planet in its natural habitat: the polar bear. Come along on a amazing journey!
Churchill Manitoba - The Polar Bear Capital of the World!
Churchill, Manitoba is so easy to get to! Located just a short flight north of Winnipeg in central Canada, this town of 900 humans becomes home to hundreds of polar bears for the months of October and November. Polar bears naturally migrate through this area each fall as they travel to spend their winter on the frozen Hudson Bay. Churchill, Manitoba is the best place in the world to see polar bears in their natural habitat.

For many months, these mammals survive in areas where sea ice meets water

in order to hunt seals that make up most of their diet.

In recent years the ice has been dwindling,

and with perhaps one-third less ice in these northern regions then there was just

the future is uncertain for the King of the Arctic.

I'm Ben Bressler, founder Natural Habitat Adventures, and I've always been

drawn to these animals,

so regal and proud, majestic and mystifying.

It is important to bring the story of the

mighty polar bear to the world. Living most of the year high in the Arctic,
0:44
only a handful humans have the chance to view them

in their natural habitat. On the tundra area surrounding

Churchill, the small grain port on the shores of Hudson Bay,
0:56
we have that opportunity.

The Northland is indeed a harsh environment. The creatures who live here

adapt well, and the indigenous people of the North

live a hearty, and soulful existence.

In Churchill,

We stay at small hotels in town, or at our specially

outfitted rolling Tundra Lodge, and head out by Polar Rovers
1:32
on daily northern safaris. We are privileged in our journey
1:36
as the Northland beckons. Young males play fight,
1:42
mothers protect their young,
1:45
and solitary giant males patrol the shores, all
1:49
waiting for winter's freeze.
1:52
after a long dark winter of fattening up, bears once again return to

Churchill. It is our sincere hope

that this annual spectacle of nature will continue

far in the future.

Living with Polar Bears
The polar bear season has started, and the people of Churchill are preparing for another four to five months of living with the largest terrestrial carnivore on the planet. Every year from July through November, polar bears switch from living on the sea ice of Hudson Bay to being on land.
Polar bears that inhabit Hudson Bay have always lived this way. At the southern end of the Arctic ice pack, the seasonal melt in Hudson Bay brings the bears onto land for a summer snooze. Polar bears’ metabolism slows down during the summer. They are coming off their most active time on the spring sea ice, when they were mating and fattening up on seals. Now, it is time for them to lay low on land until the sea ice refreezes.
While these bears may be more relaxed, they are still dangerous. The residents of the town of Churchill take a proactive approach to safety during the polar bear season. Over the years, Churchill has created a strategy—called the Polar Bear Alert Program—that has reduced conflicts between humans and bears. Conservation officers work with residents, and when a marauding polar bear is reported, officers use deterrents to dissuade the bear from coming close to people. Churchill also has a holding facility to give any bears that remain intent on coming to town a “time out.” Polar bear guards accompany visitors to Churchill, serving as experienced eyes and ears to safeguard tourists who may not know what to look for.

The Return of the Train to Churchill
Sometimes a train is just a train, until it’s not. Earlier this month, we sent Joey from our Content Team on the first train back to Churchill after 560 days of suspended service.
In what were certainly celebratory circumstances, Joey’s first ever trip to Churchill was an emotional one. Here’s his story about the historic ride to this remote town, and the people who call it home.

Polar Bears acting like Puppies in Churchill Manitoba
Despite being the size of a family car, Polar Bears are adorably nimble, incredibly intelligent, and powerful beyond belief. They're also really really comical and cute when playing around.
I was going through old footage and decided to re-edit and combine some footage from my 2012 trip with Frontiers North for a 3 day, 2 night Polar Bear Safari. The trip was coordinated by the Canadian Tourism board in partnership with Frontiers North ( and remains one of the most special travel experiences I've ever had.
These clips are taken along the shores of the Hudson Bay right before it freezes as the polar bears sit around, waiting, and relaxing in a friendly and playful mood - testing each other, playfighting, and generally killing time before the ice freezes and they head out in their different directions.
