Hereford is a cathedral city, civil parish and county town of Herefordshire, England. It lies on the River Wye, approximately 16 miles east of the border with Wales, 24 miles southwest of Worcester, and 23 miles northwest of Gloucester.
The name Hereford is said to come from the Anglo-Saxon here, an army or formation of soldiers, and the ford, a place for crossing a river. If this is the origin it suggests that Hereford was a place where a body of armed men forded or crossed the Wye. The Welsh name for Hereford is Henffordd, meaning old road, and probably refers to the Roman road and Roman settlement at nearby Stretton Sugwas. Much of the county of Herefordshire was Welsh-speaking, as reflected in the Welsh names of many places in the county (see History of Herefordshire).
An early town charter from 1189 granted by Richard I of England describes it as Hereford in Wales. Hereford has been recognised as a city since time immemorial, with the status being reconfirmed as recently as October 2000.
Hereford is served by a 4-platform railway station on the Welsh Marches Line which opened in 1854. Services regularly connect to Worcester, Birmingham, London, Manchester, Cardiff and other settlements in Wales. The station is currently operated by Arriva Trains Wales. A second station, Hereford Barton, was closed and later redeveloped. A new station is proposed for construction in the government-designated Enterprise zone in Rotherwas, south of the River Wye.

Musical Apples @ Hereford Cider Museum
Herefordshire based maker Jon Williams from Eastnor Pottery has combined the core elements of his practice; ceramics, sound and public engagement, to produce three site specific interactive works for museum visitors to play at explore.
At Hereford Cider Museum gently caress the bronze leaves and stalks of the oversized ceramic fruit to produce notes created from tinkling cider bottles.
The artworks are a permanent resource and are accessible when the museums are open.
Celebrating the History of Great British Cider
The NACM has been working with the Cider Museum in Hereford to look at some of their wonderful artefacts linked to the history of cider making in the UK. Cider has been enjoyed for hundreds of years and the Cider Museum holds a vast collection of items linked to the past. Our video tells the stories of four parts of their collection, looking at some of the key moments in the history of our favourite drink. With huge thanks to Elizabeth Pimblett, the museum Director, who had the difficult task of selecting just four out of all her favourite parts of the Cider Museum's collection.

Elizabeth Pimblett is the Cider Director at the Cider Museum in Herefordshire The museum was started in 1972 by Burchon Bulmer and Henry Weston of Weston, and Professor Hudson from the Long Ashton Research Station. The goal to capture the story of ciders at the time.
Elizabeth Pimblett of the Herefordshire Cider Museum
The museum opened in 1982. Elizabeth is from Herefordshire so taking on this job was a perfect fit for her. But what really inspired her was the art history already at the museum.
What is a cider flute?
A glass used to drink cider. Think a fluted glass classically used to drink champagne. The early flutes were very large.
Next up is a chat with Dick Witcombe of Manchester, England. He and wife Cath Potter are cider enthusiasts who twitter accounts I have been following for a while, for both inspiration and good cheer! It was a pleasure to finally meet them both. If only Alfie the dog didn’t howl so much during the chat, we could have heard more from Cath who just became a Pommelier! :)

Listen next to Gabe Cook, who authored a book in 2018 titled The Ciderologist as he tells the story and mythology behind May Hill.
The final feature is with two cider enthusiasts from Wales, Ed and Beck. They discovered Broome Farm where Ross Cider is located 10 years ago. Listen as they share a fun story of the Brockhampton Perry blend.
The Hidden Highway: Ludlow to Hereford:
Our journey along the Hidden Highway continues from Ludlow to Hereford drifting along the unmarked border between Wales and England. Ludlow's fortunes were made on the cloth trade but much of its reputation now comes from its fine Tudor architecture and local cuisine. At Leominster we visited Hampton Court Gardens with its intriguing maze and then on to the Bulmer's Cider Museum at King Offa's distillery. Our last stop was the cathedral city of Hereford situated on the River Wye where its garrison protected the Saxons from Welsh tribes.
