The Chained Library
Hereford Cathedral offers a unique historical treasure – The Chained Library where 229 Medieval manuscripts including the 8th century Hereford Gospel as well as books from later centuries are preserved, each chained for security to the Library shelves as they were in the 17th century. While such libraries previously existed throughout Europe only the Hereford Chained Library has survived. Dr Rosemary Firman takes you on a tour.

A reading child is a successful child. The National Literary Trust has found that a child who goes to a library is twice as likely to read well as one who doesn't. The UK currently stands at 25th in the PISA International Reading ranking. Libraries are vital to improving this position. We have to fight for the defence and extension of public library services.
Annie Mauger, Chief Executive of CILIP, said:
The professional skills and expertise of library staff are core to providing the public with a quality library service. Volunteers should supplement and enrich a professionally led service, not replace the knowledge and skills of staff. We are concerned that public library services in England are being damaged; the impact will be felt now and in the long term. We urge the Secretary of State to use his powers of intervention where there is clear evidence that the Public Libraries & Museums Act (1964) has been potentially breached. It is wrong to view public libraries solely as a cost; by providing opportunities for learning and literacy development libraries are an investment in communities, families and individuals.

Join my friend and I (another Mark - Firmin) as we take an easy drive around part of the Wye catchment visiting 3 ancient chapels as we do so.
Staring in the Wye Valley at Moccas chapel, which is almost 1,000 yrs old we drive up to the Gospel pass in the Black mountains and down to Capel Y Ffin chapel a small mountain chapel in the Vale of Ewyas. From there we stop off at Llanthony Priory (not shown) and then onto Patricio another very old chapel in the heart of the mountains.
There are fabulous views on this drive., which you are guaranteed to enjoy.

Hereford is a beef cattle breed, widely used both in intemperate areas and temperate areas, mainly for meat production.
Originally from Herefordshire, England, United Kingdom, more than five million pedigree Hereford cattle now exist in over 50 countries. The Hereford cattle export trade began from United Kingdom in 1817, starting in Kentucky, United States, spreading across the United States and Canada through Mexico to the great beef-raising countries of South America. Today, Hereford cattle dominate the world scene from Australasia to the Russian steppes. They can be found in Israel, Japan and throughout continental Europe and Scandinavia.
They are found in the temperate parts of Canada, the United States and Russia, as well as the temperate parts of Australia, the centre and east of Argentina, in Uruguay, and New Zealand, where they make up the largest proportion of registered cattle. They originally found great popularity among ranchers of the American Southwest, testament to the hardiness of the breed; while originating in cool, moist Britain, they have proven to thrive in much harsher climates on nearly every continent.
The World Hereford Council is based in the United Kingdom; the Secretary General, Mrs. Jan Wills, is from New Zealand. There are currently 17 member countries with 20 Hereford societies and 10 nonmember countries, with a total of eight societies.
Until the 18th century, the cattle of the Herefordshire area were similar to other cattle of southern England, being wholly red with a white switch, similar to the modern North Devon and Sussex breeds. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, other cattle were used to create a new type of draught and beef cattle which at first varied in color, different herds ranging from yellow to grey and light brown, and with varying amounts of white. However, by the end of the 18th century the white face characteristic of the modern breed was well established, and the modern color was established during the 19th century.

4K video of a day in Hereford November 2019. The aim was to see the Mappa Mundi, the trouble was that we went on Sunday the only day the chained library is closed. So that will be a video for another day. However, the 3rd of November 2019 was lovely as we walked to the Cathedral and through the City, down to the river sitting for a while outside in the sun. We finally end in the new retail section of the City called the Old Market.
Hereford sits on the River Wye, close to the border of Wales, You will notice the river was very high on the day we took this video, owing to the amount of rainfall we have been having lately.
The video starts with the approach to the Cathedral from Church Street, then going in heading for St Thomas Cantilupe’s shrine at the north transept a famous pilgrimage destination. The tapestries on each side tell his story from beginning to end. The upper section of the shrine, has been reconstructed, and brightly coloured with a painted scene of the Virgin & Child, holding the Mappa Mundi, and in the centre is the relic of St Thomas Cantilupe’s finger bone. We move through the Cathedral down to the Crypt then to a beautiful side chapel. On the way out there is a reproduction of the Mappa Mundi a pictorial encyclopaedia of the medieval world. In 2007 it became the United Kingdom’s second entry on the UNESCO’s Memory of the World register. We pass Sir Edward Elgar Statue standing with his bicycle outside the cathedral before we venture into the town heading for the Hereford Bull, and the Black and White House. The house is a well-preserved example of a 17th Century timber-framed building built-in 1621 and stands in the middle of a modern shopping precinct. Then walk by the Bishops Palace down to the river. Before starting home we ventured across town to the new shopping area called The Old Market.

The Hereford Academy Case Study - Lessonvu - ONVU Learning
The Hereford Academy is a secondary school and sixth form located in Hereford, Herefordshire, England. Until recently, the academy was in special measures. With a new principal’s fresh approach, combined with 18 months of hard work of the staff, the school is now out of the woods.
Hereford assistant principal, Ed Snelgrove recognised that to raise standards in learning, the Academy had to start with the teaching. The introduction of a performance management scorecard system was the first step; teachers were required to evaluate and rate themselves and their rating was backed up by data on student progress and behaviours. While this was a step in the right direction, there were still inconsistencies in terms of how each teacher evaluated themselves. The missing link was the ability for teachers to actually see and review their own lessons. The time was right for the school to introduce video content into the review process.
