Valparaiso: Street Art Guide to Chile's port city
Join me on my walking tour of Valparaiso, a beautiful city situated on the coast of Chile. It's a Unesco world heritage site that's adorned with beautiful street art, murals and graffiti. And read my blog post for more information:
Valparaíso, Chile Is A City For Street Art
Boonsri Dickinson visits Valparaíso, Chile. With ports and hills, it is like a small San Francisco. While in Valparaíso, she walked the streets and talked to some of the local artists.
In Valparaiso, Chile, Grafitti is High Art!
A number of examples of the streetart that makes Valparaiso a World Heritage Site.
Valparaíso
Greater Valparaíso known as “Valpo” to the locals is the second largest metropolitan area in Chile. Valparaíso played an important geopolitical role in the second half of the 19th century, when the city served as a major stopover for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans by crossing the Straits of Magellan. Valparaíso mushroomed during its golden age, as a magnet for European immigrants, when the city was known by international sailors as Little San Francisco and The Jewel of the Pacific. In 2003, the historic quarter of Valparaíso was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fun Birthday In Valpariso
Aloha Sydzillians. About two weeks ago we took a trip to the UNESCO world heritage city of Valparaiso. I decided to vlog the events happening on my birthday, since I can't have a party with friends this year. I also filmed on other days and am going to be posting about that as well. I hope you enjoy my mini series.

Valparaiso Chile - Free City Tour
City tour with Tours4Tips through Valparaiso Conception. Best way to get around all the hills is to use the Ascensors (Funiculars). There is only one real elevator which we also used.
This 3 hour walking tour from port to high hills will help you find your feet and lose your mind as you discover the Heritage Site of Valparaiso.
In Valparaiso it is easy to get lost in the maze of alleyways and street art. We lead you around not only enhancing your sense of direction but filling you with our knowledge and wisdom of locally named “Valpo”. An adventure that takes you through your senses of taste, smell, vision and laughter (ok that last one might not be a sense, but if it was it’s going to be tickled).
Today you will ride a 100 year old funicular, learn about Chileans favorite food and find out which Valpo street dog is called David Bowie. Find your local freelance Wally guide at Plaza Sotomayor at 3pm everyday rain or shine! If that wasn’t exciting enough for you to read, then get this, it is a pay-what-you-feel tour. The pressure is released, get your kicks on and enjoy discovering Chiles pride and joy!
Why take THIS tour, Why THIS us? Taking a wander with your freelance Wally guide is like hanging out with your older brothers cool friend, they know all the cool places in town! Find out where to eat, drink and party along with the little quirks of Valpo only a local would know. All this along with the town’s cultural, political, architectural and religious background.
It’s impossible to discover Valpo by bus or vehicle, walking is the only way to see the hidden gems. We choose our freelance guides on the basis of how much they love Valparaiso. If they convince us of this as well as making us laugh and feeling comfortable we know they can make you as passionate as Valpo as we are. If you aren’t convinced yet you can check us out on TripAdvisor, we have maaaad references! And if you still ain’t satisfied by the end, you don’t have to pay a single peso!
Who should NOT take this tour? If you hate meeting new people or seeing controversial if not a little offensive art then you are in the wrong place completely. Now that you are in a bit of a smaller town we like to be more interactive and friendly. In our tours people get to know each other and learn each other’s stories. If you are a more traditional type that likes a bright white clean house then you may not like Valpo. All the houses here look like they have been sprinkled on by a concoction of colour and art.

Valparaiso Travel Guide - Chile Joyful Memories
Valparaiso Travel Guide - Chile Joyful Memories
Valparaíso is a city of around 300,000 on the Pacific coast of Central Chile. Frequently referred to as simply Valpo, it is located approximately 120km west of the capital, Santiago de Chile. The city is widely known for its bohemian culture, brightly coloured houses, and beautiful seaside views.
The city's main economic activities are shipping, the naval dockyards and tourism. Valparaiso was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Visiting Valparaíso has less to do with touring specific sites than it is about roaming the chaotic, hilly streets, and taking in the views and ambiance. There is also an active nightlife and a constantly changing variety of artistic events.
The iconic green and gray trolley-buses run on a loop from Ave Argentina in the west, to Artilleria Hill in the east. Fare is CH$270 as of March 2018. The trolley-buses run until about 10 pm, every day except Sunday. Colectivos are taxis painted in black with yellow roofs that run fixed routes, and are a very common mode of transport between (and within) Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, and other surrounding areas. Ascensores, funiculars, ply between El Plan, or the coastal strip, with the cerros, or hillside communitiies. They are for the most part old and creaky, but generally reliable.
Going to Valparaíso and not going on the ascensores (inclines) is like going to Venice and not taking a ride on a Gondola, only that the ascensores cost as little as 300 Chilean Pesos (around 55 US cents). They are also of practical use as they help many local people get to the higher parts of town, saving them from having to walk otherwise long and steep pedestrian routes.
The Mirador del Cerro Artilleria, panoramic view of the city of Vina del Mar, Reñaca, Con Con and more. It can be reached on the lift Artilleria, in operation since 1893 (near the Aduana Building). The lift costs 300 Chilean pesos. It leads to Mirador Walk May 21, (1911). Cerro Artilleria (Artillery Hill) is home to a striking panorama, the Naval Museum (500 pesos), a handful of restaurants, and souvenir shops.
During the last week in the year, Valparaíso holds an annual carnival that everyone should experience at least once in their lives. Each year the festival centers around a different country, from which performers and artists are invited to come and represent their culture and their work in theater, music, and the performance arts.
Valparaiso, to its charm, is not a city of malls and department stores. While several large grocery stores are present, most other shopping is done in smaller, non-chain stores tucked in along crowded city streets, or with street vendors; larger chain stores (and more upscale goods) are more commonly found in nearby Viña del Mar. A large shopping center, however, is found on the eastern end of Avenida Brasil.
The most traditional food in Valparaiso is the Chorrillana, a heaping mound of French fries topped with steak stripes, fried onion, and fried eggs - and also large enough to feed at least two people. You can eat this in several places, but the most famous one is the traditional restaurant J Cruz. The city´s two most attractive hills, Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion, have seen a great many new restaurants open in recent years, and most visitors tend to stick to these as they are a short, safe walk from hostals.
On weekends, the time to go out for a drink (Chilean people call it salir de carrete) starts no earlier than midnight, though somewhat earlier during the week. The pubs and clubs close at 5 AM on weekends, and 4 AM on weekdays. There are many hostels around the Cerro Concepcion.
A lot to see in Valparaiso such as :
Cerros Alegre and Concepción
Plaza Echaurren – Serrano Street
Cerro Bellavista: residential area & artistic hill with colorful murals
Museo a cielo abierto: 20 murals spread throughout cerro Bellavista
Ascensor & Cerro Polanco: The only verticle elevator ascensor in the city.
Cerro Cordillera
Prat Street- Old financial district known as the Wallstreet Porteño
Paseo 21 de Mayo (Cerro Artilleria)
La Matriz Church and surroundings
Ascensores (inclines)
La Sebastiana, one of three homes of poet Pablo Neruda (cerro Bellavista)
Ex Cárcel, a former jail turned cultural center and concert venue
Museo Naval y Maritimo (Naval and Maritime Museum)
Museo del Tren Más Lento del Mundo
( Valparaiso - Chile ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Valparaiso . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Valparaiso - Chile

Valparaiso, Chile (The best bohemian city)
Valparaiso's history, UNESCO preservation, and the bohemian residents made this was a wonderful city and one of our favorites.
At seven in the morning we arrived in Valparaiso. When we pulled up there was paint in every direction, at least one person per block sleeping on the street, buses and cars flying through the meandering roads to test physics and the friction of their tires, trash was blowing in the wind, the city smelled like public urination was encouraged, and the air was filled with sounds of dogs howling and faint music. In a way that a scruffy dog is endearing, the city made you feel good to be part of it.
Once we arrived to our rented flat, we met the people we would share it with and settled into the town by lazing around with a good book. With the sounds of a beautiful Spanish guitar playing below, reading quickly turned into an afternoon nap. It’s easy to say we lost time here.
Once we were motivated, there was no shortage of art, restaurants, architecture, and music to fill our days here.
What a wonderful place in the world and feel blessed we were able to visit. Thank you Valparaiso!
