Herne Bay Clock Tower
A look at Herne Bay clock tower on Wednesday 29th May 2019.
The clock was built in 1837 and is believed to be one of the first freestanding clock towers in the United Kingdom. It was funded by Mrs Ann Thwaytes, and now serves as a memorial to the fallen of the Second Boer War.
The original clock mechanism by John Moore was replaced in 1971. The bell, made of bell metal, was supplied by Thomas Mears II and weighs 12 cwt and measures 36 inches (91 cm) high and 46 inches (120 cm) diameter.

Herne Bay Clock Tower - DJI Phantom 4 Pro - 4k 2018
Built in 1837, this Grade II listed landmark is believed to be the first purpose-built freestanding clock tower in Britain, and stands 82 feet tall. Designed by architect Edwin Dangerfield in the style of a Grecian Temple, it was a gift to the town from the philanthropic widow Ann Thwaytes.
Due to weather erosion, renovations took place in 1905. The clock faces were changed to white opal glass and the Portland stone pillars were rotated 180 degrees (and the erosion is clearly visible in the video). In the 1990s, Neptune's Arm sea defence was constructed to further protect the area.
For 134 years the clock was wound manually until an electric unit was installed in 1971.
The cannon on the north side were placed there in the early 1900s, having been found on the seabed and are believed to be Dutch in origin.
Now, a little note on my flying... I started the video using the Phantom 4 Pro's Tripod mode but as you can see, the footage was somewhat jolty. I switched it back to manual mode (just before the birds swooped) and I was much happier with the footage from then on. Some people love DJI's flight modes, but I must admit that I prefer to free hand. I probably won't be trying Tripod mode again.
