WWII pilot's remains arrive home 70 years af
ALBANY COUNTY More than 70 years after a U.S. Army pilot from Herkimer was killed in New Guinea during World War II his remains are back on U.S. soil.
In a plane much different than the P-4 Thunderbolt 2nd Lieutenant Edward Barker flew during the war the remains of the fallen fighter pilot were carried into Albany International Airport.
It's a great day, Barker's nephew Mark Shoemaker said.
Shoemaker saluted the flag-draped casket along with members of the U.S. Honor Guard. Shoemaker says he thought this moment might never come.
New Guinea is a big place, you know, where he was 700-800 feet up on a mountain in the jungle. You know, the chances of anybody finding him were pretty small. But they did, Shoemaker said.
Barker's fighter plane crashed in the southwest Pacific on September 30th, 1944 but the wreckage was not discovered by the U.S. military until 1962.
I've been working with the POW/MIA, Department of New York for 20 years, Shoemaker said.
It wasn't until 2012 until Barker's remains were excavated. Shoemaker soon learned that he had the key to making a positive identification.
When I get a call from a genealogist, she isn't calling me for sport, Shoemaker said.
A forensics team had a lot to analyze.
For example, the airplane serial numbers, where he was when they saw him last, but the DNA is the clincher, Shoemaker said.
DNA is not the only thing that bonds the two together. Barker was just 21-years-old when he was killed behind the controls and Shoemaker was 22-years-old when he went to Vietnam as a fighter pilot.
So I know just what he was thinking. I know just what it felt like. And it's a different bond, Shoemaker said.
Shoemaker's connection to his uncle is also woven together by stories Shoemaker has heard since the day he was born.
'Geez, you remember when Eddie did this?' Or, you know, 'You remind of when he did that,' Shoemaker said.
Now, finally a homecoming for Shoemaker's uncle 70 years in the making.
Rather than a regular funeral where everybody's upset and saying goodbye we're happy and saying hello, welcome home, Shoemaker said. It's a great, great feeling.
The hearse with Barker's remains was escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders back to his hometown of Herkimer.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Fenner Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be held with full military honors at noon on Saturday at Calvary Cemetery in Herkimer.
Shoemaker says his uncle will be laid to rest next to his mother, who he remembers being devastated by the loss of her son during World War II.
Michael Cohen Testimony live before the House Oversight Committee
President Trump's former personal attorney and fixer Michael Cohen had harsh words for his former employer during public testimony before a House congressional panel Wednesday. He is a racist. He is a con man. He is a cheat, Cohen, testifying before the House Oversight Committee, said in his opening statement about Mr. Trump.
Cohen's testimony comes as Washington prepares for a final report from special counsel Robert Mueller's nearly two-year investigation into Russian interference in U.S. elections and possible coordination between Trump campaign associates and the Russian government.
The irony of Cohen's testimony two months before he reports to federal prison for lying to Congress was not lost on lawmakers. I've made it abundantly clear to Mr. Cohen if he comes here today, and he does not tell the truth, I will be the first to refer those untruthful statements to the DOJ, Chairman Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, said when opening the hearing.

Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 24, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
Opening arguments in President Trump’s impeachment trial began on Jan. 22 in the Senate. House managers, led by Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), will present three days of opening arguments. Then, senators will have 16 hours to ask questions in writing. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. will read the questions out loud, and the appropriate side — defense or prosecution — can answer them.
President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.
