Built into the uninhabited hills c. 10 kilometres south of the city centre of Windhoek, Heroes' Acre opened on 26 August 2002 and operates for the purpose of foster a spirit of patriotism and nationalism, and to pass on the legacy to the future generations of Namibia.

Mansudae Overseas Projects is a construction company from North Korea. It is the international commercial division of the Mansudae Art Studio. As of August 2011, it had earned an estimated US$ 160 million overseas building monuments and memorials in many different countries, mostly in Africa.

In Namibia, Mansudae Overseas Projects has designed two major projects, most impressive of which is the Heroes' Acre Memorial (inaugurated August 2002) with a statue of the unknown soldier near Windhoek, Namibia (the other one is the Presidential residence and office of the president of Namibia). The inscription below the statue of the soldier reads: “Glory to the fallen Heroes and Heroines of the motherland Namibia! Sam Nujoma 26th August 2002'”.

Namibia has a population of 2.1 million people and a stable multi-party parliamentary democracy. Agriculture, herding, tourism and the mining industry – including mining for gem diamonds, uranium, gold, silver, and base metals – form the basis of Namibia's economy. Given the presence of the arid Namib Desert, it is one of the least densely populated countries in the world. Namibia enjoys high political, economic and social stability.

NAMPA: WHK Kaukungwa laid to rest at Heroes' Acre 17 SEPT 2014

WINDHOEK, 17 SEP (NAMPA) – The late Simon Hafeni 'Mzee' Kaukungwa was laid to rest at Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek on Wednesday.
The funeral service was amongst others attended by President Hifikepunye Pohamba, founding President Sam Nujoma, Prime Minister Hage Geingob, family members, members of the opposition parties, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Cabinet Ministers and friends.
Kaukungwa passed away at the Ongwediva Medipark Private Hospital on 01 September this year.
He was 95.

WINDHOEK, 12 SEP (NAMPA) – President Hifikepunye Pohamba has described the late Aaron Mushimba as “a fearless and patriotic freedom fighter”.
Speaking during the deceased’s memorial service here on Thursday, Pohamba said he was a “strategist and results-oriented cadre”.

Celebrating Namibia's Heroes' Day 26 August 2017

On August the 26th 1966 the first shots were fired in Namibia’s war for independence at the battle of Omugulugwombashe in Namibia's central Northern region.

It would take 23 years for Namibia to achieve independence but it is these first acts of armed resistance that are being commemorated on Saturday 26th August.

Heroes’ Day is celebrated every year in Namibia in an effort to never forget the sacrifices and efforts of all the proud Namibians who fought for freedom and self-determination.

Namibia’s Heroes’ Day is a time for all Namibians to reflect on how far the country has come since attaining its independence from South Africa in 1990.
