Lloyd Hunter's Serenaders - Sensational Mood
Recorded 1931
Hunter (died 1961) was trained by Josiah Waddle, the first African American musician to organize a band in Omaha, around 1915. Hunter's bands played regionally, filling high school auditoriums, jitney (Dime-a-Dance) halls, farm buildings and amusement parks throughout Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota from the 1920s through the 1950s.
Lloyd Hunter's Serenaders were one of several black territory bands African American community of the Near North Side of Omaha from the early 1920s through the big band era. In 1924, Hunter formed his first 6-piece band. In 1927 it become an 8-piece band with Lloyd Hunter on trumpet, Elmer Crumbley on trombone, Noble Floyd on clarinet and alto sax, Bob Welch on trombone, tenor sax and bass sax; Burton Brewer on piano; Julius Alexander on banjo; Wallace Wright on tuba, and; Amos Clayton on drums. As was usual, the band toured the area playing one night stands. By 1929, the band was heard on radio stations KGBZ in York, Nebraska; KFAB in Lincoln, Nebraska; and WOW in Omaha.
He recorded only once, near the beginning of a ten-month national tour with then prominent blues singer Victoria Spivey. The album, Sensational Mood, included Lloyd Hunter, Reuben Floyd, and George Lott or Ted Frank on trumpets; Elmer Crumbley or Joe Edwards on trombone; Horace Noble Floyd and Archie Watts on alto saxophones; Harold Arnold or Dick Lewis on tenor saxophone; George Madison, piano; Herbert Hannah, banjo; Robert Welch or Wallace Wright, bass, and Pete Woods or Jo Jones on drums. It was recorded April 21, 1931 in New York. Originally issued on Vocalion 1621.
The 12-piece band undertook a national tour that featured Spivey, who was married to Hunter's second trumpet Rueben Floyd at the time. The tour was less than successful, and by 1932 Hunter was back in Omaha, which would be his home base for the next 10 years. Later, drummer Johnny Otis, singer Anna Mae Winburn and saxophonist Preston Love, were in the band.

Glenview Gardens (Circa 1914) - 63 acres of Lifestyle
The land where Glenview gardens now sits was originally purchased by Harold Hobby and George Stephenson back in 1910. They planted an orchard and then grew various vegetables which they then delivered to the East End Markets by horse and cart.....Can you imagine? The same family farmed the land until 1970, it was sold once again and then once more to the current owners in 1989. They have lived here, upgraded and renovated the house, increased the land holding to 66 acres, bought up 3 boys and an endless number of cattle and now find it's time to retire and let another family enjoy all this peaceful setting has to offer.
The comfortable farmhouse has a couple of options for entry but the family wander into the cosy kitchen via the expansive carport. You'll probably do the same! A wood oven runs 6 radiators throughout the house, reminiscent of many older English country homes. It also keeps the kitchen cosy and warm and slow cooks like a dream. There is a separate freestanding oven and dishwasher for convenience. The 2 timber dressers plus sideboard, provide great storage and are included in the sale.
As was the habit years ago, the family sat together for meals in the dining room without distraction other than good company and conversation. The living room is large with a feature fireplace and access to the front verandah. Attractive pressed tin ceilings feature throughout the farm house. A split system air conditioner keeps the temperature controlled whatever the time of year.
The 3 bedrooms are all as you would expect in a house of this age - large! The main bedroom has a spacious ensuite bathroom with a spa bath with a view out to the covered pergola. A walk in robe is also located off the ensuite. Bedrooms 2 and 3 have built in robes and central heating radiators for added cosiness.
The owners enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. The covered pergola means you can entertain almost any time of the year as it is very protected and the front verandah provides a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility.
The land is lush and productive. The back paddocks have been cut for hay in the past having produced up to 600 rectangular bales off 6 acres. These days, they are grazed by up to a comfortable 20 head of cattle. Rainwater feeds the farm house, the bore water services the gardens and house toilets.
There is ample shedding including a 18 x 9 m workshop with adjacent hay shed, an old shearing shed (the boys had some memorable camp outs with friends over there) and a tool shed closer to the house for gardening equipment, the quad bike, etc. A handy storage room is adjacent to the 4 car carport for coats, boots etc.
The homestead is nestled into a protected valley on the outskirts of Forreston. The ever famous Checker Hill is just one road over the back and the sleepy little town of Forreston joins the world stage for a couple of days a year. With town, a scenic 50 minute drive down through the back way (as we locals call it), the Barossa and Adelaide Hills Wine regions on your doorstep, moving to this tranquil part of the hills could be just the move you’ve longed for.
