TO ACCESS ALL MY 400 VIDEOS, click on Trainluvr above. The Hershey is the only surviving old style interurban electric railway in the western hemisphere. It takes about four hours to ride the line from just outside Havana to Matanzas, a city that lies 140 km to the east. Three trains depart each terminal each day, they meet at the center, Hershey, exchange batons and continue on. There are no signals and its all single track with trolley wire on wood poles. Two older, but heavily rebuilt cars still exist for railfan and tourist group charter, but I did not video them.
In December, the climate felt as comfortable as it is gorgeous on the day of this shooting. I hope all serious railfans take this journey of discovery of rural Cuban life via inter urban railway. Music by Puente Latino Takes You There.
Riding trains in Cuba, Hershey Train Havana, Getting around in Cuba
First off becareful not to get electrocuted using a Selfie Stick ⚡. Train stops and people go to their house to get something not so quickly, train stops and chats with workers, loading produce and construction materials, cool travelers and local people. The train is slow and that is the fun part so drink some cold beer on the ride and enjoy the atmosphere.

Hershey train ride in Cuba - from Matanzas to Havana. Beautiful views of palm trees.
The train is old and dilapidated. It goes quite slow most of the time. It is operated by Ferrocarilles de Cuba (FCC).
The service uses old Sarria electric rolling stock bought second hand from Barcelona. The trains were refurbished in 1970s, but originally may be dating back even to 1950s.

The Hershey Railway, Casa Blanca to Matanzas, Cuba.
Take a leisurely trip from Casa Blanca, across Havana harbour from the big city, to Matanzas - 92 kilometers by rail taking 3 hours and forty minutes with countless stops. We did hit a large steer but nobody seemed very concerned. Everyone got a turn at the controls and got to blow the horn as desired. Very few automobiles or trucks in view the whole way, were were truly traveling in a parallel universe. These cars were built in Spain in 1948, and though some of the original stock is apparently stored we did see one electric loco at the half-way town of Hershey, home of an enormous rusting sugar refinery.
