On May 18 the exhibition 'De Bovenkamer', which is a synonym for the word brain, has officially opened in the national museum of psychiatry 'Het Dolhuys' in Haarlem, the Netherlands. This exhibition teaches youth all about the functioning of their brain in an interactive way.
IJsfontein Interactive Spaces developed the 'Brainlab'. In this lab visitors can play a game, which unveils what kind of personality they have. IJsfontein is also responsible for the creative direction, design and styling of the building.

Nominated for the BankGiro Loterij Museum Awards 2009, Het Dolhuys Museum in Haarlem focuses on psychiatry, mental illness, and the fine line between madness and society's perception of what is normal. The visitor is sent on an interactive journey from the psychiatrist's office, through the world of insanity (and quite possibly genius), to an appreciation, or at least some sense of what it must be like to suffer mental illness.

Dutch Profiles: Kossmann.dejong
Exhibition designers Kossmann.dejong exploit every inch of space available to them, to create immersive experiences around their subjects. With a background in architecture, they use a mix of media and disciplines to tell associative stories.
For Kossmann.dejong, film, light and sound are essential components in the imaginative presentation of complex content. With a host of projects scattered around the globe, they set a new standard in exhibition design, exemplified in their work for the World Expo in Shanghai. The Dolhuys, an old mental institution in Haarlem that became a museum of psychiatry in 2005, is a good example of how they tell compelling stories.
In an online era, where information is available to everybody all the time, some might argue that museums are a relic of the past. But Kossmann.dejong are adamant that their approach guarantees the survival of museums in the 21st century.

LEVENSLANG - Het Criminele Brein Ontleed

Voor het eerst in Nederland waren er foto’s van ‘geboren’ criminelen te zien, afkomstig uit het Museo Lombroso in Turijn. Psychiater Cesare Lombroso was een pionier in het onderzoek naar de biologische oorzaken van crimineel gedrag. Deze bijzondere collectie, samen met een interactieve-installatie van Titia Bouwmeester met verhalen van tbs’ers, vormden de basis van ‘Levenslang’. Het was de tweede grote tentoonstelling waarin Het Dolhuys zich profileert als museum van de geest, die met haar nieuwe programmering de menselijke geest in al haar facetten centraal stelt. De tentoonstelling was te zien van 8 oktober 2014 t/m 25 mei 2015.
