Hexham is a market town and civil parish in Northumberland, England, south of the River Tyne, and was the administrative centre for the Tynedale district from 1974 to 2009. Smaller towns and villages around Hexham include Corbridge, Riding Mill, Stocksfield and Wylam to the east, Acomb and Bellingham to the north, Allendale to the south and Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle to the west. Newcastle upon Tyne is about 25 miles (40 km) to the east.
Hexham Abbey originated as a monastery founded by Wilfrid in 674. The crypt of the original monastery survives, and incorporates many stones taken from nearby Roman ruins, probably Corbridge or Hadrian's Wall. The current Hexham Abbey dates largely from the 11th century onward, but was significantly rebuilt in the 19th century. Other notable buildings in the town include the Moot Hall, the covered market, and the Old Gaol.
Hexham's architectural landscape is dominated by Hexham Abbey. The current church largely dates from c. 1170–1250, in the Early English Gothic style of architecture. The choir, north and south transepts and the cloisters, where canons studied and meditated, date from this period. The east end was rebuilt in 1860. The abbey stands at the west end of the market place, which is home to the Shambles, a Grade II* covered market built in 1766 by Sir Walter Blackett.
At the east end of the market place stands the Moot Hall, a c15 gatehouse that was part of the defences of the town. The Moot Hall is a Grade I listed building, and was used as a courthouse until 1838. The Old Gaol, behind the Moot Hall on Hallgates, was one of the first purpose-built jails in England. It was built between 1330 and 1333 and is a Grade I listed Scheduled Monument. Hexham Library can be found in the Queen's Hall. It contains the Brough Local Studies Collection which is the second-largest local history collection in the county.
Hexham is bypassed to the north by the A69 road, linking it with Carlisle to the west and Newcastle to the east, which bypasses the original route, the A695. The town is served by Hexham railway station on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, also known as the Tyne Valley Line. The line — part of the UK publicly owned national rail network — was opened in 1838, and links the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear with Carlisle in Cumbria. The line follows the course of the River Tyne through Northumberland.

Views in and around Hexham Abbey in Northumberland. Hexham Abbey is a place of Christian worship dedicated to St Andrew and located in the town of Hexham, Northumberland, in northeast England. Since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537, the Abbey has been the parish church of Hexham. Four of the stained glass windows in the Abbey are the work of Jersey-born stained glass artist Henry Thomas Bosdet who was commissioned by the Abbey. The east window was the first project and was installed about 1907. Two smaller windows followed and the large west window was installed in 1918. This video features views of the Abbey building and contents, including the stained glass windows, and internal decor.

St Wilfrid's Crypt, Hexham Abbey
A short tour of the wonderful 7th C crypt in Hexham Abbey, Northumberland.
The story is basically thus: Wilf went off to Rome, to have a bit of a mooch around and liked what he saw of the stone shrines and temples and came back to muddy and thatchy England and took a look at all the Roman rubble laying around and thought 'I'll have me some of that', and constructed this stone crypt out of it. At the time, the first stone building in Hexham. For good measure, he also built the stone crypts under York and Ripon as well.

QUEENSLAND has taken the lead in the celebration of this day, on which Australia, by the valour of her sons, became entitled through an ordeal of blood, fire and suffering to take her place among the great nations of the world, and to stand on equal terms with those peoples, both past and present, who have given of their best that humanity might benefit.
From the first inception of the celebration the keynote was the solemn remembrance before Almighty God of the heroic dead.
In addition, the public were urged never to forget the great debt they owed to those who have lost their dear ones, and to those sailors and soldiers who have returned after deeds of unsurpassed courage and daring on every field in which the Empire and her Allies fought for the rights of a free people.
That the day should be suitably commemorated was suggested by Mr. T.A. Ryan [ Thomas Augustine Ryan ] to Colonel the Hon. A.J. Thynne [ Andrew Joseph Thynne ], Chairman of the State Recruiting Committee, which body then took the matter up, with the result that a meeting, called by the Mayor (Alderman G. Down) [ George Down ], was held in the Brisbane Exhibition Hall on January 10th, 1916, and the citizens then assembled constituted the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee.
Of the resolutions passed at this foundation meeting the first proposed by His Excellency the Governor, and seconded by the Hon. T.J. Ryan, was that:
“That the heroic conduct of our gallant Queensland troops during the present war, and especially on that ever-memorable occasion of the landing at Gallipoli on April 25th last, has earned for them undying fame, and deserves the fullest recognition by the people of this country, whose rights and liberties they have been bravely defending.”
The second, proposed by Major-General McCay, and seconded by Mr. Tolmie, was:
“That, in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that the first anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli shall be suitably celebrated in this State, and that the other States of Australia be invited to consider similar action.
The third, proposed by Chaplain-Colonel Garland, and seconded by Colonel Rankin, was:
“That a committee be appointed to make all the necessary arrangements for and carry out the celebration of ANZAC Day, such committee to consist of the Mayors of Brisbane and South Brisbane, the Premier, the Leader of the Opposition, the Chairman and Honorary Secretaries of the Queensland Recruiting Committee, and Alderman H.J. Diddams, C.M.G., [ Harry John Charles Diddams ] representing the Patriotic Fund Committee, with power to add to their number.”
These resolutions were carried by the meeting with the utmost enthusiasm.

Hexham is a hunting and shooting market town surrounded by countryside 17 miles up the river tyne from Newcastle upon Tyne. This is a quick walk around it.
S1 Ep16 - A Visit To Hexham, Northumberland
Hexham is a market town in Northumberland. It sits between Newcastle upon Tyne in the east and Carlisle to the west. This makes it a fantastic place to base yourself for daily explorations of the surrounding areas, such as the Lake District, the Pennines, Northumberland National Park, and the North Sea coastline.
Hexham itself has much to offer. It is steeped in history having the beautiful Abbey, the Moot Hall, the covered market, and the Old Gaol (which is now a museum), among other things. Then there are the walks you can take. One of the best and most stunning starts at Tyne Green Park, down alongside the river Tyne. This avenue of trees is simply the most stunning way to start/finish a walk I have ever had the pleasure to come across, it is a photographer's/artist's dream!
The town is well catered for with major supermarkets through to quirky independent retail outlets and plenty of eateries. The historic buildings and quaint cobbled street, along with the grounds of the abbey are well worth spending time walking around.
So if it is just a day visit or if you are planning to use Hexham as a base for your holiday, I can highly recommend it, it is just simply a beautiful town with an awful lot to offer a visitor.
I will be returning very soon to capture the awesome beauty of Autumn along the walk at Tyne Green Park, I would recommend any photographer/artist who is looking for something special for an Autumn piece to do likewise.
