Kuromori Kabuki 黒森歌舞伎 Hie-jinja Shrine 日枝神社 Sakata 酒田市 Yamagata 山形県 by Kari Gröhn karigrohncom
Kuromori kabuki has been handed down by the farmers in the rural village of Kuromori for over 270 years. The kabuki play is offered to the god at Hie Jinja Shrine every February. This living tradition draws behind the audience a long row of cameras. Some of them show signs of national NHK affiliation.
Besides adult actors and musicians many boys on stage are younger than their early teens. The amateur event is very ´professional`. At first the children’s voices are low pitch and loud when Edo police officers fight the five gangsters. The scene consists of very stylized movements and is full of dramatic poses. Costumes and a beautiful set design compliment the performance.
People in some Japanese farming communities have performed their own version of kabuki plays, imitating the professional theatrical groups that began in the early 16th century. The plays were performed as entertainment and as part of local festivals. Rural kabuki evolved in different directions, depending on the region. Today, only a few groups are still active.
Kuromori Kabuki Matsuri - Outdoor Kabuki Festival in Tohoku
In Tohoku in the small town of Kuromori in Yamagata Prefecture they do a festival where they perform Kabuki outdoor in the middle of February. Though cold, it's a unique experience to see kabuki as snow flakes trickle down. One of the plays is done by kids - kodomo kabuki.
For Kabuki fans, the plays they performed were Shiki Sanbaso, Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, and Genpei Nunobiki No Taki.

Kuromori Kabuki
Agriculturally themed kabuki has been performed for over 280 years continuously from the mid-Edo era, as a dedication to the Kuromori Hie Shrine in Sakata city. Kuromori kabuki is performed for the gods within the shrine during the extreme cold of February to coincide with the Lunar New Year, and as such it is also referred to as “The dance in snow” or “The cold dance”. It is considered to be one of the nation’s best with its grand scale and variety of performances, and has been designated as one of Yamagata’s prefectural intangible folklore cultural assets.
The youth kabuki group, made up of local children from Kuromori Elementary School, undergoes instruction once a week from October in preparation for the February performance.
Kuromori kabuki is fostering many young performers to carry on the tradition, as most national arts groups are facing an aging population of performers. The kabuki group has received high praise from traditional performing arts researchers for nurturing so many young successors.

Uesugi Jinja - Yonezawa City (上杉神社、山形県 米沢市)
One of many attractions of Yamagata Prefecture of Northern Japan. Since this is the first promotional video (kinda), I would like to introduce the main must visit spot of Yonezawa City, and that is the Uesugi Jinja, which located in the middle of the city itself.
Uesugi Jinja was established in 1876 by local followers of Uesugi Clan, dedicated to one of the most famous warrior during the Warring States Period, Uesugi Kenshin. Most of the buildings was caught by fire during the Great Yonezawa Fire in 1917 or 1919, which around 2,294 homes were destroyed. However, the shrine was rebuilt in 1923.
