Enryaku-ji Temple (延暦寺）, Mt. Hiei, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
Enryakuji Temple （延暦寺） is located on top Mt. Hiei (over three thousand feet from sea level) in Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Mt. Hiei also touches Kyoto prefecture on the east side but mostly this temple is considered part of Shiga prefecture.
Enryakuji temple and it's precincts on Mt. Hiei (Hieizan) are designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Both the temples in Hieizan and temples in Koyasan are considered two of the most sacred sites for Buddhists.
I went there twice, once in winter and once in summer, I have included the video footage of the winter trip and slide montage of the summer trip.

In this video we will be taking a day trip from Osaka up Mount Hieizan which is located just east of Kyoto and is home to Enryakuji, one of the most important monasteries in Japan. Before taking the cable car up the mountain, we'll take a delightful boat cruise on Lake Biwa, the country's largest lake. After exploring the ancient temple complex, we'll ride the HIEI train along the Eizan train line back to Kyoto and eventually return to Osaka.

Hieizan Enryakuji Japanese Temple - The World Cultural Heritage【京都 滋賀・比叡山延暦寺】
Enryakuji Temple is located in Shiga Prefecture.
It's the head temple of Tendai sect.
In 1994, it has been a UNESCO world cultural heritage as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
You can enjoy the sacred atmosphere and Old Japanese architecture.

Sakamoto Cable Railway - A visit to Mt. Hiei (Hieizan) in Shiga Prefecture
Sakamoto Cable Railway is categorized as a inclined cliff (funicular) railway, in which the the cable car is dragged up a mountain using cable. You will see quite a few cable railways of this type in Japan (both small and big) because it is a country with many mountains.
The Sakamoto Cable Railway has the distinction of being the longest (2 km) of this type of railway in Japan. While the mountain top height is only 1500 feet (500 meters) you can imagine it is a pretty good view from there.
Mt. Hiei or Hieizan as it is called in Japanese has access from both the Kyoto prefecture side and Shiga prefecture side. Hieizan has been and still is one of the sacred places in Japan as it is the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism and has a sprawling Enryakuji Temple.

石積みの町 坂本 : The stone walls constructed by Ano-shu （Shiga, Japan）
穴太衆の石積みで有名な坂本の町を撮影いたしました。日が昇り始めると、どことなく石垣島や竹富島のような雰囲気を感じました。
The town of Sakamoto in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture originally prospered as a shrine town built around the two major shrines of Enryaku-ji and the Hiyoshi Taisha. Many traces of the town's past still remain even today, and you can see where Enryaku-ji's monks retired at satobo, as well as the houses people lived in, and the old fences. The famous stone walls here were built by a historic stonemason society called Anoshu. The stones were stacked together without processing the stones found in nature, utilizing the surfaces and corners of the stone to hold them together. A particular feature of the walls is the variety of stone sizes. Anoshu is also said to have been involved in the construction of castles such as Azuchi Castle, Fushimi Castle, and Nagoya Castle. The stone walls surrounding the satobo on the road to Hiyoshi Taisha are particularly beautiful, and this is a very popular spot. On the north side of Hiei Sakamoto Station there is a statue of Saicho who opened the Tendai Buddhist sect in Japan, as well as Shogenji's temple bell. When the samurai Oda Nobunaga laid siege to Mt. Hiei and set it ablaze, it was said that this bell was rung to alert the villagers of what was going on. In addition to the Hiyoshi Taisha and Enryaku-ji, there are numerous other tourist attractions such as the Hiyoshi Toshogu, Saiko-ji, the Hakko-do Sentai Jizo, Hiyoshi Chaen, and Sakamoto castle ruins.

Mii Dera Temple (三井寺）, Otsu City
Mii Dera Temple （三井寺） is located at the foothills of famous Mt. Hiei in Otsu City of Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Mii Dera Temple belongs to Tendai Jimon sect of Japanese Buddhism and Monk Enchin (Chiso Daishi) was responsible for the origin of this temple.
Along with Enryakuji, Kofukuji and Todaiji Temple, Mii Dera Temple is known as the one of the four largest temple's of Ancient Japan, when Kyoto City was the capital of Japan.
Mii Dera Temple is also Temple #14 in the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage of Western Japan.

Sakamoto Cable Car to Mt Hiei (坂本ケーブル)
The Sakamoto Cable Car is the longest cable car in Japan (there are more than a few in Japan) and goes up Mt Hiei where there is the world heritage site Enryakuji.
The view from the top (on a clear day) is fantastic and the Enryakuji Temple is really lovely to visit. When I went there it was the middle of the week and it wasn't crowded at all. In the middle of the journey the cable cars pass each other in a freaky passing loop.

Ishiyama-dera temple is located in Otsu city of Shiga prefecture. This temple is a beautiful suburban temple, next to Seta river (close to Lake Biwa) in Otsu city.
One of the highlights of this temple is the two deva kings that are at the front gate (san mon). These two statues are sculpted by two famous carvers of the Kamakura period Tankei and Unkei. The statues look two dimensional from a distance but by a close look you can see that they are three dimension statues. Very interesting... This temple is number thirteenth temple of the Saikoku (33 kannon temples of Kansai region) pilgrimage circuit.

Hello It's Nagix dad.
While Nagix is in Okinawa with his grandparents, Nagix dad and mam traveled around Kansai and Tokai area. We visited Shiga,Kyoko,Mie,Shizuoka.
We started to travel from Shiga pref. because we wanted to visit Hieizan Enryakuji temple.This temple owns High school and Junior high school.Nagix mam used to be a student of this high school.It brings back memories.After that we went to Sanzenin.It was so beautiful place where you should go once.
We have driven about 1000 km!! Amazingly far and we were both tired but it was really a nice trip!
