From Heaven to Hell and Back in Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘Garden'
In this episode of Anatomy of an Artwork, explore ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’, the mind-blowing masterpiece by Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch at the Museo del Prado. Pleasure, sin, and suffering exist side by side in this exquisitely detailed monumental triptych. Painted more than 500 years ago, this epic work has been thrilling audiences ever since. Some consider the work to be a warning about the dangers of carnal sin; others see it as a portrait of a lost paradise. Whatever Bosch’s intention, it is now celebrated as a masterpiece of the imagination. Watch more episodes of Anatomy of an Artwork here:

The Jeroen Bosch Sightseeing Tour in Den Bosch (Netherlands)
The Dutch city of 's-Hertogenbosch (commonly called Den Bosch) offers nice sightseeing tours per boat through the old canals of the city.
I took the so-called Jeroen Bosch tour, where one goes per boat to the museum of this well-known Dutch painter who was born (c. 1450) and died (1516) in this city.
The unique thing about this museum is that it's held in a church, which the city of Den Bosch wanted to tear down. After some protests the museum organisation of Jeroen Bosch bought the church to permanently house the exhibition of this painter.
Jeroen Bosch, officially name Hieronymus Bosch used images of demons, half-human animals and machines to evoke fear and confusion to portray the evil of man. His works contain complex, highly original, imaginative, and dense use of symbolic figures and iconography, some of which was obscure even in his own time.

The main theme in the works of Bosch is time and again the struggle of every human being between good and evil. How do I behave? What have I to do? As we see here in the triptych of The Haywain, it's also about good and bad behaviour. The people are running behind the Haywain and that's about earthly richness. And from above Christ is looking down what's happening on the earth.

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Matthijs Ilsink, Project Coordinator Bosch Research and Conservation Project, Exhibition Curator:
Many of Bosch's motifs appear to be very scary because they are painted in a very naturalistic way. So, a viewer can easily access the imagery and relate to that. And he must have done that on purpose. On the other hand, the amount of tortures and scary images is so big that it almost becomes enjoyable or laughable. So this is a very tricky balance and that's what makes these paintings exciting as well.

We are in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch, a fairly small town, in the provincial museum, so with modest dimensions. Therefore, it was difficult initially to make this exhibition and it was I think a very good idea of the city and of the museum to invest in time and in knowledge. It wasn't possible for the museum to exchange for instance a Rembrandt for a Bosch or a Titian for a Bosch. But what was possible was to set up an extensive research project, like the Bosch Research and Conservation Project, and invest in knowledge and give that back to the museums, work together with the museums and really learn more about the paintings and drawings by Bosch.

The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch.
The central panel of the triptych shows us a world without families. All people here is young: young men and young women.
There are no children or old people. There are no father or mother, no husband or wife...
It's a world where sexuality don't follow God's rules.

Thousands have been calling in to a church St John's cathedral in Den Bosch's hotline, after the church commissioned a strange sculpture - a young winged woman, talking on a mobile phone.
It is not what you would expect perched up high on a 13th century Dutch cathedral, but the sculpture has attracted worldwide attention and calls, from as far as China and Latin America.

Jheronimus Bosch, Touched by the Devil (2015) - Official Trailer (HD)
In 2016, the Noordbrabants Museum in the Dutch city of Den Bosch held a special exhibition devoted to the work of Hieronymus Bosch, who died 500 years ago. This late-medieval artist lived his entire life in the city, causing uproar with his fantastical and utterly unique paintings in which hell and the devil always played a prominent role. In preparation for the exhibition, a team of Dutch art historians crisscrosses the globe to unravel the secrets of his art. They use special infrared cameras to examine the sketches beneath the paint, in the hope of discovering more about the artist's intentions. They also attempt to establish which of the paintings can be attributed with certainty to Bosch himself, and which to his pupils or followers. The experts shuttle between Den Bosch, Madrid and Venice, cutting their way through the art world's tangle of red tape, in a battle against the obstacle of countless egos and conflicting interests. Not every museum is prepared to allow access to their precious art works.
Jeriminus Bosch Museum Museum
Slide show of the photos of artwork I took in the Jeriminus Bosch museum in Den Bosch (s'Hertongenbosch), Netherlands. Ok the museum doesn't hold the original works but does have really high quality repros and its in an excellent old church in centre of town. Only 6 euros to get in and worth it to get an idea of all his work. Art lovers if you ever in Holland take a trip over to the museum in Den Bosch and away from the madness that is Amsterdam.
Beautiful Bosch Parade 2016
Since 2010, the Bosch Parade takes to the waters of ’s-Hertogenbosch every June. A wondrous armada of vessels and objects inspired by the work and ideas of Medieval painter Jheronimus Bosch. Artists from all disciplines (art, theatre, dance, music, architecture) collaborate with groups of enthusiastic amateurs and volunteers to create this artistic, water-borne parade. This spawns not only a creative floating parade by and for the city, but also a wide-ranging creativity network throughout the city.

Den Bosch In Your Pocket - St. Catherine's Church (St. Catharina)
Almost 150 years ago, architect Jan Stuyt was deeply inspired by the Hagia Sophia on a trip to Istanbul, then Constantinople, and this gorgeous domed church, completed in 1917, is the magnificent result. Although a church has stood on the same spot since the 16th century, St. Catherine's Church is something completely unique to this traditional, typically Dutch city. Its colourful dome has a diameter of 22 metres and depicts the so-called Eight Glories and the Three Remaining Glories painted by renowned Dutch artist Jan Oosterman. Every corner of the Kruisherenkerk (as it
is known colloquially) is adorned with big wooden statues
known as the choir of angels. The Byzantine Society of 's-Hertogenbosch, who hold Latin services on Sundays, also have their own chapel in one section of the church. It's also famous for its excellent acoustics and many concerts take place here for just that reason. The best time to visit is on an organised Kring Vrienden van 's-Hertogenbosch tour or just after mass.

DER GÖTTLICHE. HOMMAGE AN MICHELANGELO - BEHIND-THE-ART
Ausstellung in der Bundeskunsthalle vom 6. Februar bis 25. Mai 2015

Ascension day in s-Hertogenbosch
To our surprise the religious holiday did not mean that the shops were closed. The market place was busy with people selling flowers, plants and herrings. And a band was playing something resembling Bavarian. The town's foremost hero, Hieronymus Bosch (what a genius) has a statue in the middle of the market place, but the market related crate piles and the coke bottle stuck by his neck did not indicate local worship of our 15th century hero. In the end, we als came across an electric bus!
