Hierve el Agua, Oaxaca | Stone waterfall San Lorenzo Albarradas, Mexico
Hierve el Agua, Oaxaca | Stone waterfall San Lorenzo Albarradas, Mexico
Hierve el Agua or The water boils, is set of natural rock formations in the Mexican state of Oaxaca that resemble cascades of water. The site is located about 70 km east of Oaxaca city, past Mitla, in the municipal devision of San Lorenzo Albarradas, with a narrow, winding unpaved road leading to the site. At first glance, this formation looks like a frozen waterfall, which in itself is impossible, given the mild climate of southern Mexico. But in fact it is - stone waterfall that sounds even less likely, but it is quite real. This amazing waterfall that looks petrified, is a tourist attraction known as Boiling Water. Natural mineral springs that attract crowds of tourists, are also responsible for the formation of this unprecedented geological formation. Once there actually was a waterfall, but its waters were so rich in minerals that after he was dry, his place is left is a stone formation.
The site consists of two rock shelves or cliffs which rise between fifty and ninety metres from the valley below, from which extend nearly white rock formations which look like waterfalls. These formations are created by fresh water springs, whose water is over-saturated with calcium carbonate and other minerals. As the water scurries over the cliffs, the excess minerals are deposited, much in the same manner that stalactites are formed in caves. One of the cliffs, called the cascada chica (small waterfall) or the Amphitheatre, contains two large artificial pools for swimming as well as a number of small natural pools. One of the artificial pools is very near the edge of the cliff.
The site consist of two waterfall-like rock formations which have been formed over thousands of years. Both cliffs rise over 50 meters from the valley floorimpressive petrified waterfalls (calcium carbonate) formed from thousands of years ago by the carbonated water runoff. From springs, water falls rugged cliffs over 50 meters high., with one rock formation reaching down twelve metres and the other reaching down thirty metres. The twelve meter one is called cascada chica (small waterfall) and flows off a base which is about sixty metres wide. The other, cascada grande (large waterfall), extends down from a base with which is about ninety metres wide and eighty metres above the valley floor.
The rock formations are often described as cascadas de sal (salt waterfalls), cascadas petrificadas (petrified waterfalls) and cascadas pétreas (rock waterfalls) . The falls are formed by relatively small amounts of water which is oversaturated with calcium carbonate and comes to the surface through cracks or figures on the mountainside. The water has a temperature of 22 to 27C. As the water runs down the rock face, it forms large stalactites similar to those found in caves. The flow of water from the spring varies significantly between the dry and rainy seasons. 95% of the surface rock formations are of calcium carbonate; however, lower layers of both rock and water currents are little known as they are sealed by the above layers. The calcium carbonate gives the formations a white or near white appearance, but other minerals that can be present in the water, such as silver, barium and iron can also be found and determines the color of a particular stalactite. The calcium carbonate in the water is due to rainwater which passes underground. First it absorbs carbon dioxide, and forms molecules of carbonic acid. This acid comes into contact with underground marble and partially dissolves creating calcium bicarbonate. When the water runs above ground, the excess minerals fall out.

Oaxaca, Southern Mexico: A Walking Tour of Oaxaca City
360º Hierve el Agua, Oaxaca, Mexico ⎸ 360 Honeymoon
Hierve el Agua (meaning ‘boiling water’, which is a lie, because it’s proper freezing) is a freak of nature some 70kms outside of Oaxaca (wa-ha-ka) in South Mexico. It’s something of a cliff-edged paradise brain-bender…spring water loaded full of minerals has forced its way out of the earth into pools. Excess minerals, over time, have solidified on two ledges, making it look like a big frozen waterfall…often described as ‘cascadas de sal’. I think it looks more like a massive ice cream. It does look amazing, but as with many of these places of natural wonder, the realities of visiting are less glamorous. What you really want is this place to yourself; to bathe, relax, spot birds of prey soaring over the mountains…but what you’re likely to get is bus loads of other people who want exactly the same thing. The hordes, however, don’t ruin it. It’s still a remarkable thing to see. Maybe the best way to is to get a public bus early in the morning to beat all the tour buses. But if you’re lazy like us, you can just get a tour that takes you here, Mitla (ancient ruins), the Tule tree (a two thousand year old tree that’s really flipping wide), a Mezcal visit (briefly see how Mezcal is made, and then be sold loads of it) and a fabrics visit (see how they die wool with natural things like algae and insects…and then be sold loads of rugs). We paid 300Pesos for the tour (about GB£12), which isn’t at all bad. More info? 360honeymoon@gmail.com

Teococuilco Mexico
Small town in south mexico call 'Teococuilco de Marcos Perez'. Approximately 80min - 120min from Oaxaca, Mexico. As you can see from the video, this small town is literally an oasis in the Sierra Juarez Mountain Range. This town is known for their native dialect 'zapotec' (google for more info) and for their very religious holidays in October and December.

Mexico: The City of Oaxaca.
The City of Oaxaca is a UNESCO heritage site known for its historic artist's colony set in the rugged Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. It is also an ideal base from which we explore the archaeological sites of Monte Albán and Mitla and the extraordinary petrified beauty of Hierve el Agua. Ancestors of the Zápotecs and Mixtecs can be traced back nearly 11,000 years and following the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, Dominican missionaries founded fabulous churches, monasteries, and convents. Many buildings still exist and the baroque architecture of the Cathedral, the Church of Santo Domingo, and the Convent of Santa Catalina (now a hotel), have all been beautifully restored. A walk through the city reveals a shopper's paradise of gold filigree and silver handcrafted jewelry, black pottery and hand-woven crafts. ZIPOLITE, OAXACA MEXICO 2013 HD
Música Regional de Oaxaca - _La Sandunga_
Playa Zipolite is a beach community located in San Pedro Pochutla municipality on the southern coast of Oaxaca state in Mexico, between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido. The name Zipolite, sometimes spelled Sipolite or Cipolite probably comes from the Nahuatl word sipolitlan or zipotli, meaning bumpy place or place of continuous bumps or hills. However, some claim the name means beach of the dead in either Nahuatl or Zapotec because of dangerous underwater currents just offshore. The beach is currently popular with foreign tourists, especially backpackers, who stay in one of the many rustic cabins or camping spaces that line the beach.
OAXACA MEXICO - TOUR AND TRAVEL VLOG
Oaxaca is one of Mexico's most unique states, noted for its rich traditional heritage and diverse ethnic population, as well as for its artistic, cultural, and culinary treasures. This video will cover the many sights and UNESCO World heritage sights to photograph in this region.
1. Oaxaca City (7:23 - 9:35)
Designated UNESCO Site noted for its Spanish colonial architecture. It is filled with colorful, wonderfully preserved
buildings.
2. Markets (8:18 - 8:23)
Oaxaca is known as the Land of the Seven Moles, a complex sauce used with meat and rice. But that is not all. Oaxaca is renowned for its unique regional cuisines. The markets are a great way to try the food.
3. Mezcal Factory Tour (2:06 - 2:50)
Mezcal is one of Oaxaca's most famous exports. It is similar to tequila, only with a rich smoky flavor. Mezcal comes in many unique flavors and different aging categories including a variety that comes with a worm for added flavor. Check out the Mezcal Factories where they will show you just how this liquid gold is made.
4. Textiles (1:14 - 2:00)
Oaxaca is world famous for its textiles. They are created using natural dyes and wool. The textile patterns mimic the design elements from the Mitla, an archeological site with distinctive geometric patterns, making them distinctive from any other textiles.
5. Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman (7:36 - 8:00)
Glorious Baroque church found in Oaxaca City. It includes lavishly ornate interior. Construction started in the 16th Century but did not complete until the 17th Century. The town cathedral is witness to all the cultural activities taking place beneath its facade, including weddings and festivals.
6. Árbol del Tule (0:40 - 1:10)
Botanists estimate this tree to be 2,000 years old. It is considered the largest and oldest tree in the world with a perimeter at 139 feet in circumference. It didn't even fit into one picture frame!
7. Hierve de Agua (3:50 - 4:30)
One of the most surreal landscape I have ever seen is Hierve de Agua, found about two hours outside of the city. The name translates to place where the water boils, and contains non-thermal pools, and natural rock formations rising form the valley below including the main highlight, a petrified waterfall. It was created by minerals that pushed through limestone, depositing onto the mountain. You can hike to the waterfall or wade around in the mineral pools.
8. Zocalo and Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude (8:23 - 8:36)
The Zocalo is the central plaza in Oaxaca City that includes a Spanish Baroque style church, Basilica of our Lady of Solitude. The Zocalo is connected by a pedestrian walkway to the other plaza, Santo Domingo. Along the Zocalo are many street shops and markets.
9. Mitla (2:30 - 3:46)
One of the famous archeology sites which translates to place of the dead. Mitla was an ancient burial and funeral ritual site for the Zapotec people, one of Oaxaca's indigenous groups. It includes one of the few surviving temples, noted for its distinctive small tile mosaic-like geometric patterns in the facade.
10. Monte Albán (6:00 - 7:28)
Monte Albán is so amazing, that it deserves its own blog post (coming soon). It is a UNESCO World Heritage site found about 20 minutes outside of the city. It is the first great city of Mesoamerica and dates back to 500 or 600 BCE. The Zapotec people leveled the mountains by hand (no metal tools or even wheels) to build their ceremonial center known as Monte Albán here, complete with temples or astronomical and religious purposes. Mitla and Monte Albán give you an idea of just how advanced this indigenous civilization was in its heyday.
