Kanazawa, Japan - Nagamachi Samurai District (2019)
Kanazawa (金沢市 Kanazawa-shi) is a city located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 January 2018, the city had an estimated population of 466,029 in 203,271 households, and a population density of 990 persons per km². The total area of the city was 468.64 square kilometres (180.94 sq mi). It is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture.
Kanazawa Higashi Chaya District Japan ????????
A chaya (lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. During the Edo Period, chaya was found in designated entertainment districts, usually just outside the city limits. Kanazawa has three, well-preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi.
Of the three districts, the Higashi Chaya District (東茶屋街, Higashi Chayagai) is the largest and by far the most interesting. Two chaya, the Shima Teahouse, and Kaikaro Teahouse are open to the public. Other buildings along the central street now house cafes and shops. One of the shops, Hakuza, sells gold leaf products, a specialty of Kanazawa, and displays a tea ceremony room which is completely covered in gold leaf. ????????

Higashi Chaya-gai is a beautifully preserved historical area of Kanazawa with many traditional wooden buildings. This area was established in 1820 as an entertainment district for rich merchants and nobility.
The name Higashi Chaya-gai literally means “Eastern Teahouse District,” because the chaya, or teahouses, were where wealthy customers would be entertained by geisha with traditional music, dancing, and drinking games. Many of these buildings have today been converted into restaurants or souvenir craft shops, but there are two geisha teahouses that are open to the public during the day. In this article we will introduce Higashi Chaya-gai’s chief highlights.

► Higashi Chaya is a traditional Japanese entertainment area, Chaya basically means teahouse, but in reality - in this case, it means, geishas and restaurants (although there is in fact a couple of teahouses as well). Kanazawa's East Chaya district is extremely well preserved, and probably the closest thing you can get to actual timetravel.
This area in Kanazawa along with Kyoto's Gion district, have been designated as Japan's cultural assets. Both offers a great genuine Japan experience I can't recommend enough. The easiest way to get there from Tokyo, is a 3 hour ride by Hakutaka or Hokuriku Shinkansen. - Enjoy!

Higashi Chaya District in Kanazawa Prefecture
Kanazawa has three Chaya Districts. They are “Nishi Chaya District”, “Higashi Chaya District”, and “Kazue-machi District”.
A Chaya is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. Higashi Chaya District is the largest one among the three Chaya Districts.It is an old downtown with beautiful latticed windows called “Kimusuko”. Higashi Chaya District was built in 1820 since the licensed quarter called Chaya was organized. It has prospered as an entertainment district and has also loved as a social area for civilized people. Today, it has been designated as Important Traditional Building Preservation Area of Japan. You can hear the sounds of shamisen, three-stringed Japanese musical instrument, and taiko drums through the street in the evenings. Once you walk on this historical street you will feel as if you are slipping back in time.

In the city of Kanazawa, Japan, there are 4 historic districts that contain the oldest houses in the city: Higashi Chaya, Nishi Chaya and Kazuemachi, which are the old geisha neighborhoods, and Nagamachi, where the old ones are found. Samurai houses.
Kazuemachi is recognized as part of the Cultural Heritage of Japan. Thirty traditional houses have been there since the beginning of the 19th century. Kazuemachi's visit takes less than 20 minutes. The visit is done jointly with that of Higashi Chaya, on the other side of the river. The bus stop of the Loop bus is right next to the bridge and it is the same stop for these two districts.

Higashi Chaya machi walk, Kanazawa, Japan - Virtual Trip
In Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, three old neighborhoods dating from the Edo period are a delight for tourists. In the same geographical area, on both sides of the river Sagano, one can already visit the district of Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi street. South of the city, beyond the Sai River, Nishi Chaya Street and finally in the center, the former samurai Nagamachi district. The first three are the old traditional tea houses in which geishas practiced their art.
In Kanazawa, Higashi Chaya is the largest group of traditional houses dating back to the Edo period. Along two or three streets and their perpendiculars, we can walk in the middle of a hundred well-maintained wooden houses that plunge us into the heart of old Japan. The vast majority of these houses have become nowadays discrete souvenir shops or chic restaurants, but one comes mostly to this district to admire the magnificent façades aged by time and for its timeless atmosphere.
The street is flat, pedestrian and without sidewalks and the houses are glued to each other, perfectly aligned on two floors: the perspectives seem almost too perfect.

2017 Kanazawa Japan Best Food and Tour in a Day
We only had one day, and it was actually our last leg of the 4 days long weekend trip. So we optimized our time to try the best omakase sushi, the famous gold leaf covered ice-cream, japanese fluffy pancake, amazing izakaya restaurant, full japanese style hotel buffet, unagi don (Eel Rice) and visited the Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen, Higashi Chaya old town, all in less than 24 hours!

Omicho Market - Kanazawa ᴴᴰ ● 江町市場 金沢
► Here's a few impressions of Omicho Ichiba (*Ichiba means market in Japanese) Kanazawa's largest fresh food market since the Edo Period. Today, it is a busy and colorful network of covered streets lined by about 200 shops and stalls - a great place to spend a rainy afternoon. While most shops specialize in the excellent local seafood, you can also find fruits, vegetables and kitchen tools on sale.
Although the market is most exciting during the morning hours, it also gets quite busy around noon, when tourists and locals arrive to have lunch at restaurants inside the market. It is not unusual for lines to build in front of the popular restaurants, many of which specialize in kaisendon - rice bowls topped with fresh seafood.
Easy access to Omicho Market by bus, located halfway between Korinbo area and Kanazawa Station. - Enjoy!
