Kathmandu Food Tour + Momo Cooking Class [Nepal Travel Blog]
*WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD IN NEPAL?!*
Join me on a local Kathmandu food tour as well as a momo cooking class! You'll learn about Nepal's culinary culture -- and why you shouldn't ignore it for the mountains (though those are worth exploring too, of course, as you'll see in the video!).

*A big thanks to the Nepal Tourism Board and the Pacific Asia Travel Association for sponsoring my trip!
- [Jessie] Nepal is renowned for its challenging treks, stunning views and high peaks. But as you're enjoying the beauty of the country, don't forget there is a culinary culture worth exploring. Dal bhat, rice, lentils and often vegetable curry, is a national dish. And you'll see it everywhere along with momos. During a cooking class in Kathmandu, I learned how to make these South Asian dumplings, chopping cabbage and onion, mincing garlic and ginger, and even making dough from scratch. Momos are stuffed with everything from buffalo to chicken to veggies and beyond, even chocolate. They can be fried or steamed, spicy or mild, and are served with delicious sauces. I may be biased, but these were the best momos I had in Nepal. Another way to explore local food is via a breakfast tour. Along with trying typical breakfast foods most visitors never get to, in hard to find places, you'll see Katmandu as it wakes up, including the Asan Market, open from five to 8:00 a.m. So what did we try? Potatoes with sweet semolina. Fried rice bread with milk tea. And spicy chickpea curry, just to name a few. Between bites, we visited local stupas and temples, and met the locals whose food keep the city delicious. We also learned some local folklore. Near temples, it's common to feed the pigeons to draw them together, then run through the bird crowd. As they fly away, their flapping wings are thought to transfer energy to the people below. Something else that gives me energy? The jeri swari haluwa from Shree Kumari Bakery, which tastes like the Nepali version of funnel cake and offers a sweet ending to a delicious day in Kathmandu.
Mera Peak: Nepal's highest 'Walk-Up' peak
Mera Peak, the highest trekking peak in Nepal at over 6,400 m (21,247 ft) is a mountain in the Mahalangur section, Barun sub-section of the Himalaya and administratively in Nepal's Sagarmatha Zone, Solukhumbu District. Mera Peak climbing is suitable for all fit trekkers who dare to dream of standing on a Himalayan summit and for all experienced trekkers looking for an exciting expedition-style tented camping trek and climbing trip in Nepal. It is a physically demanding snow trek with straightforward climbing.
Mera Peak offers a panoramic view of Chamlang, Kangchenjunga, Makalu, and Baruntse in the east and the peaks of Cho-Oyu, Ama Dablam and Kangtega to the west. Everest can be viewed to the north over the massive unclimbed south face of Lhotse and the Nuptse/Lhotse ridge.

Kathmandu is the capital and largest municipality of Nepal. Kathmandu, Biratnagar and Pokhara are the first, second and third largest cities of Nepal respectively. It is the only city of Nepal with the administrative status of Mahanagar (Metropolitan City), as compared to Upa-Mahanagar (Sub-Metropolitan City) or Nagar (City). Kathmandu is the core of Nepal's largest urban agglomeration located in the Kathmandu Valley consisting of Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur and a number of smaller communities. Kathmandu is also known informally as KTM or the tri-city. According to the 2011 census, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has a population of 1,003,285 and measures 49.45 square kilometres (19.09 sq mi).
The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley of central Nepal. It is surrounded by four major mountains: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Kathmandu Valley is part of three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur), has the highest population density in the country, and is home to about a twelfth of Nepal's population.

Nepalese air hostess on Yeti Airlines flight - passenger asks if she is married
What a quaint little sight on a local Yeti Airlines flight from Bharatpur in Nepal to Kathmandu. The air hostess sits on her little jump seat and gives instructions and then stands up to serve the passengers and answer their questions including one inquiring about whether she is married or not!
Is that a Dornier 228 plane or a Pilatus Porter? OK, a viewer tells us it is a BAE Jetstream 41. Thanks, Sandeep Mishra!

Welcome to Nepal! Nepal is a beautiful landlocked country. Though it is small, the country has variations in landscapes from high, rocky Himalayan terrain, to green lustrous hills and flat, fertile Terai plains. The rich culture, scenic beauty, and heartwarming hospitality make Nepal a must-visit country. There are many ways one can opt to explore Nepal. However, to explore the Himalayan region, the best option is trekking. The Himalayan country of Nepal lies in Southern Asia. To the north is the autonomous region of Tibet, in the People’s Republic of China, and to the south is India. Roughly the shape of a rectangle, Nepal has a length of 885 km and a width ranging from 145 km to 241 km. Nepal also contains the largest mountain range on earth, the Himalayan Mountains. This creates an elevation profile that is one of the most extreme in the world. It ranges from a mere 70 meters above sea level to the highest point on earth, Mt. Everest at 8,848 meters. Because of this huge disparity in elevation all within a distance of 150 km, Nepal contains enormous climatic variations from sub-tropical to alpine. It is popularly known in the world for its incredible diversity of ecosystems. The high peaks of the Himalayas in the north quickly drops down to thick tropical jungles teeming with wildlife in the south on the way to the Ganges floodplain. Between the two extremes are glittering glaciers, thundering rivers, forested hills and terraced slopes. Besides an incredibly rich and diverse ecology, Nepal also has amazing cultural traditions. You can wonder at the exquisite craftsmanship and artistic ingenuity of the people then and now as you view the temples and historical palaces full of architectural value. Part of the religious and cultural fabric of Nepal is their numerous national and religious festivals. These festivals and ceremonies have been celebrated since time and can be seen at all times of the year. Nepal is also famously known for the warm hospitality given to every guest. For all who come to this mysterious realm awaiting you is an atmosphere of welcome and warmth. Nepal is a breathtaking and enchanting land of myths and legends to come, see, and experience.

The REAL Nepal - Kathmandu
See Kathmandu the way it really is - completely unscripted and raw! The people of Nepal are some of the most real people you will ever meet. We just recorded some of what we saw so we could share this with all of you... If you want to get an idea of what the real city of Kathmandu is like, this video should give you a pretty fair cross section - from the touristy shopping areas to the REAL communities.
This video starts out on the rooftops, where the Nepalese relax in the warm sun on Saturday afternoons. The streets of Thamel market are a delight to explore, a great place to buy exotic (yet unbelievably affordable) Asian fabrics for your sister or wife. Durbar square in Basantapur is a prime hang out spot for locals and tourists alike. Food is great and is a great value. Be prepared for no toilets, no soap, an no clean tap water.
Take $500 (US) with you and you can live like a king for a month, if you play your cards right. Locals will love to have you over for supper and may even put you up for the night. The folks are classic and its a spectacular place to see. If your job ever takes you in the vicinity of south central asia, at least take a quick look at Nepal for sure! If you are a poor college student, a tire fixing guy, or a hardware store checkout guy - you can still make this trip! Totally affordable for all kinds of people. If you are scared of airplanes or cant afford one - catch a ride on a cargo ship and clean toilets for a few weeks to pay your way, then hitchhike! Get your neighbor to feed your goldfish while you are gone. There is no excuse NOT to see this place at least once. Just go!
