The Aswan Low Dam or Old Aswan Dam is a gravity masonry buttress damon the Nile River in Aswan, Egypt. The dam was built at the former first cataractof the Nile, and is located about 1000 km up-river and 690 km (direct distance) south-southeast of Cairo. When initially constructed between 1899 and 1902, nothing of its scale had ever been attempted; on completion, it was the largest masonry dam in the world. The dam was designed to provide storage of annual floodwater and augment dry season flows to support greater irrigation development[1] and population growth in the lower Nile. The dam, originally limited in height by conservation concerns, worked as designed, but provided inadequate storage capacity for planned development and was raised twice, between 1907–1912 and again 1929–1933. These heightenings still did not meet irrigation demands and in 1946 it was nearly over-topped in an effort to maximize pool elevation. This led to the investigation and construction of theAswan High Dam 6 kilometres (4 mi) upstream.

These floods brought high water and natural nutrients and minerals that annually enriched the fertile soil along the floodplain and delta; this had made the Nile valley ideal for farming since ancient times. Because floods vary, in high-water years the whole crop might be wiped out, while in low-water years widespread drought and famine occasionally occurred. As Egypt's populationgrew and conditions changed, both a desire and ability developed to control the floods, and thus both protect and support farmland and the economically important cotton crop. With the reservoir storage provided by the Aswan dams, the floods could be lessened and the water stored for later release.

The building of the Aswan High Dam became a key objective for the Egyptian government and played a pivotal role in Egypt's modernization following the Revolution of 1952.

As Egypt's population grew there was a dire need to control the flooding to protect and support farmland and the important cotton crop.

In 1960 Egyptian and Russian engineers came to Aswan to begin building the dam that would control the seasonal flow of the Nile for irrigation, and create a reliable source of electrical power.
The site selected for the High Dam was south of the low dam where the river banks were solid granite.

42 billion cubic meters of rock, sand and clay were used in the building of this enormous embankment dam, and over 1,000 men lost their lives during construction.

The Aswan High Dam is 3,830 metres long almost one kilometer wide at the base.

At maximum 11,000 cubic metres per second of water can pass through the dam, which produces 2,100 megawatts of power.

After 10 years, on the 21st of July 1970, construction of the Aswan High Dam was completed, at a cost of over a $1 billion.

It's estimated that this cost was recovered in less than five years due to flood protection, increased agricultural production and hydroelectric generation, as well as savings from improved navigation.

The creation of the vast reservoir called Lake Nasser, 550 km long with a surface area of 5,250 square kilometres forced the relocation of over 100,000 people.

A number of temples and archaeological sites would also have to be moved otherwise they would been lost forever beneath the rising water.

The international effort to save and relocate these temples to safe higher ground was an engineering feat that was in many ways as great an achievement as the building the dam itself.

The contributions of the world community through UNSECO to preserve these temples and world cultural heritage sites, like Abu Simbel and the Phial Temple complex, was a prime example of countries working together in peace for the greater good of all humanity.

Today the life giving Nile, jewel of Egypt past and present, continues to provide water, power and economic stability to the country, and its neighbors.

21st July 1970: Construction of Egypt’s Aswan High Dam is completed

Taking just over ten years to build, the High Dam cost nearly $1 billion. However, it’s estimated that this cost was recovered in less than five years thanks to income from increased agricultural production and hydroelectric generation, as well as savings from flood protection and improved navigation.

A dam had already been built across the Nile near the southern Egyptian city of Aswan in 1902. It was designed to store the Nile’s annual floodwater and release it during the dry season in order to irrigate the farms and settlements further downstream. However, despite being heightened twice by the 1930s it still did not provide enough water for future development. Consequently designs for a new dam were sought.

Following the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 led by the Free Officers Movement, President Gamal Abdel Nasser began searching for funding for the new dam. The US, Britain and the USSR all initially offered financial support, but after the USSR promised funding at just 2% interest the other powers pulled out. Income from the Suez Canal following Nasser’s nationalisation of the waterway provided further funds for the construction of the dam.

The completed dam is almost 4km long and 111 metres tall. The 550km long reservoir created when it was flooded is known as Lake Nasser, and holds 132 cubic kilometres of water. The creation of the reservoir forced the relocation of over 100,000 people and a number of archaeological sites that would otherwise have been lost beneath the water.

HIGH DAM of ASWAN:
The High Dam, is a rockfill dam across the Nile River, Located in Awan Egypt,(At South (BELOW) of the map included in this video) it was finished in 1970 (although inaugurated in January 1971). The dam, 364 feet (111 metres) high, with a crest length of 12,562 feet (3,830 metres) and a volume of 57,940,000 cubic yards (44,300,000 cubic metres), This Dam origined the Lake Nasser,(watch my Video of Lake Nasser) which has approximately a capacity of 5.97 trillion cubic feet (169 billion cubic metres). Of the Nile’s total annual discharge, some 2.6 trillion cubic feet (74 billion cubic metres) of water have been allocated by treaty between Egypt and Sudan,
The USA and U.K. had earlier tried to fund part of the project but it did not materialise. The USA withdrew the funding, followed by U.K. and the World Bank.Nonetheless The Soviet Union finally Was Who came to the rescue of Egypt by providing the required funds for the project in 1958, and finally the Construction of the High Dam began in 1960.

The high dam is approximetly 111 metres from its lowest point one side to its highest point the other side.You can see this on the way to abu simbol,aswan.As long as you enjoy 2 and a half hour coach journies into the desert

Aswan Day 2 Abu Simbel - Philae Temple - High Dam (High Dam is waste of Time and Money????)

I would strongly suggest any one reading this prior to going to Aswan and Abu Simbel trip to go in reverse order to these locations. The whole system is set up to go early in the morning to Abu Simbel and then stop and the High Dam and Philae Temple on the way back.

This would work if you are taking a taxi/van for your group and not necessarily when you join in with others. Our taxi was around US$100 for the day.

So go to Philae Temple first. Save your money and avoid High Dam and then go to Abu Simbel. By that time all the big tourist coaches would have left and you can have the run of the place to take the best photos.
