High Dune - Great Sand Dunes National Park Full-Trail 360
A full 4K 360° VR compatible video of the hike to High Dune in Great Sand Dunes National Park. This hike is straight forward and has the opportunity for many routes up to the top. Hiking in sand isn't the most fun thing to do, but it is a great experience. The view from the top is by far the best, with mountains, flat plains, and the dunes themselves that are both inviting and ominous.

Great Sand Dunes National Park - Fall 2016 Trip
Amid the quiet of Colorado's Great Sand Dunes
The sand dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park in south-central Colorado are famous for being the tallest in North America - and among the quietest places in the entire country. Conor Knighton takes a listening tour.
Great Sand Dunes National Park || Colorado || FullTime RVers
Great Sand Dunes National Park has to be one of most deceptive places we have adventured at thus far. Not because there are evil deceptive people there, but those dunes are MUCH larger than they look in any pictures we have seen. Compare them to the size of the surrounding mountains and of course they are small, but they don't call them the Great Sand Dunes for nothing. You will have to see for yourself to truly see their mightiness!
Not only are the Great Sand Dunes the largest Sand Dunes in the United States, but they are also an awesome place to go sledding! Why wait for winter when you can sled in the summer too! Take a trip to the Great Sand Dunes and explore an incredibly unique landscape!

Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve - Star Dune
This is Star Dune, one of the tallest dunes in the park.
20141003; Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve
The Great Sand Dunes are located in the San Juan valley near Mosca, Colorado. The dunes cover about 150,000 acres or 30 square miles.Their base is at approximately 8,170 feet, with the tallest dune (the Star Dune) rising 750 feet from its base to its crest. They are surrounded on one side by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.
It is roughly about one mile from the parking lot adjoining the dunefield to the top of the first ridge of dunes. A challenging walk through the sand if you are out of shape or not yet acclimatized to the altitude at over 8,000 feet.
The Medano Creek flows around the east side of the dunes. The amount and duration of this creek's flow is determined by the amount of winter snowmelt, and various from the time of year, and from year to year.
Dogs on leash are allowed on the dunes, with owners being responsible for cleaning up any messes they'd leave behind. Note: the temperature of the summer sands can blister paws, cause heat exhaustion, or stroke. Our October visit posed no problems for our pets paws...the ambient temperature was in the mid-to-high 60s.
There are two places at which you can camp with an RV...either within the National Park boundaries at one of their primitive campsites, or at the nearby (about 5 miles away) Sand Dunes Oasis, a privately owned RV Park with full hookups...with an accompanying restaurant (good food, including home made pies!) and gift shop.
We arrived at the dunes on the 3rd of October 2014 after having camped at the Pagosa Springs Riverside RV Park overnight. It's about a 4-hour ride from Pagosa Springs to the dunes...depending upon how fast you drive and the road conditions...and whether or not you're towing a trailer as we were. You'll experience Wolf Creek Pass along the way, traveling through South Park, Del Norte, Center, Hooper, and finally arrive at Mosca, CO where we filled up with gas not knowing whether or not gas would be available at the dunes. The Sand Dunes Oasis does have gas pumps available, so you may not want or need to venture into Mosca.
You can rent sandboards at the Oasis Gift Shop if you are so inclined to go boarding down the dunes!
This video is part 2 of 2 parts. Part 1, the journey from Pagosa Springs to the Dunes can be viewed at this YouTube Link:
Great Sand Dunes National Park + 3 things we'd do different
We were surprised and delighted by our trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park, but we did not come prepared. We are already thinking about the next time we'll get to visit this super fun National Park with all the right things!

RV Nomad Life | Great Sand Dunes National Park
Exploring the Great Sand Dune National Park was really fun and a lot more than we expected. The dunes are much larger, more grand, and much taller than originally expected. If the water companies had their way in previous history they wouldn't even be here! Check out our hike to the top where we ran into some unexpected friends and learn a little about the Dunes!

We visited this National Park in August 2019. It was our first time to try sand boarding and sand sledding. We had a lot of fun and it made our trip worthwhile!

Overlanding | Great Sand Dunes National Park
We spent an amazing weekend overlanding in the San Isabel National Forest. We had a great camping spot on some BLM land. While we were there we had the opportunity to visit Great Sand Dunes National Forest, and it did not disappoint. We have had the great fortune to visit many National Parks, and Sand Dunes was defiantly one of our favorites. This a great place to bring a picnic and setup by the river. You can hike out to the dunes for sand boarding, or go a little further and camp out on the sand for the night. The stars at night are amazing. What ever you choose you will not be disappointed.

Great Sand Dunes National Park
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is in southern Colorado. It’s known for huge dunes like the towering Star Dune, and for the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes. The backcountry Medano Pass Primitive Road winds through a canyon toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Trails lead to forests, wetlands and alpine lakes like Medano Lake, which is home to trout and tundra wildlife.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park - Zapata Falls (2019)
Zapata Falls just outside of The Great Sand Dunes National Park is a must hike when visiting the area. This hike is amazing from start to finish, from the parking lot one gets excellent views of The Great Sand Dunes with their dramatic backdrop of the San de Cristo Mountains. This hike is less than a mile but packed with amazing views and adventure. When attempting the Zapata Falls hike be prepared to get very wet from the icy cold waters of the falls. You have to hike through the river and back into a cavern to access views of the magnificent 30ft falls. The biggest challenge on this hike is wading through the snowmelt waters and walking over smooth and slippery river stone. We recommend arriving at the trail head early due to the crowded nature of this hike as well as, bringing an extra change of footwear and clothing. Overall this hike is a quick adventure, the falls are only a 1/2 mile from the parking lot, making it accessible to most people even children and older individuals if their balance is up to par.
