Egyptian Fashion and Style
In Egypt, the abeya is as much a fashion statement as a pair of jeans. Take a trip through Cairo fashion from full face covers to sexy shoes.
Westerners tend to be uncomfortable with Middle Eastern clothing styles, but in fact many Egyptians dress like Americans - heavily influenced by the second-hand clothing trade. Western wedding dresses are surprisingly popular: bikinis – the skimpier the better – and lingerie are sold almost everywhere.
But most Egyptian women prefer an abeya – the word means cloak in Arabic. It’s a loose overgarment – a robe-like dress worn throughout the Muslim world. In Egypt, the abeya is traditionally black. It’s designed to protect women from unwanted attention, and shows the wearer has a pure and modest character.
Abeyas may all look the same to Westerners, but there are in fact dozens of different styles and an almost infinite variety of decorations. The Abeya is as much a fashion statement as a pair of jeans.
The niqab, on the other hand, is pretty basic. It covers the entire face except for the eyes. The niqab is not obligatory in Egypt, but many women choose to wear one in the presence of males unrelated by blood or marriage.
Since Egyptian dress covers everything except the hands and feet, it’s not surprising that Middle Eastern women are obsessed with shoes and handbags. Entire blocks in Cairo are dedicated to selling little else. Women love high heels, glitter – anything that might catch attention. But most Egyptians can’t afford those fancy stores. When they need something, they head for Cairo’s second hand markets.

Ancient Egyptian Sandals and Shoes
During the ancient Egyptian period people mostly travelled barefoot. It is believed that since the temperature in Egypt was very high throughout the year, people gave less importance to wearing footwear. There is hardly any record to suggest that the Egyptians wore shoes or any other form of footwear.
The ancient Egyptians began wearing sandals during the early years of the New Kingdom rule. The sandals used by these people were very simple and were made either by using straw, reeds or leather. The wealthy people wore leather sandals and these lasted for a longer time than the sandals which were made using straw or reeds.

From Pharoahs to Peasants: Antique shoes on display in Cario
(16 Oct 2015) LEAD-IN:
A new exhibition in Cairo is focusing on 5,000 years of Egyptian footwear.
47 shoes are on show at the city's Egyptian Museum - including the golden sandals of Egypt's most famous Pharaoh.
STORY-LINE
They're the shoes once worn by the boy king.
These gold sandals were fit for King Tutankhamun himself.
And they're the star draw at a new exhibition charting Egyptian footwear through the ages.
Stepping Through Time charts the shoes of the ancient Egyptians from around 3,000 BC through to the Ottoman period in the 19th century.
But it's Tutankhamun's shoes says Mahmoud El-Halwagy, that is the stand out piece on show.
They were found on the King's feet when his tomb was discovered in 1922.
The most important item on display, without a doubt, are the sandals which belonged to the Golden Pharaoh, Tutankhamun, says El-Halwagy, the Museum's former director.
47 shoes are on display here.
We may know much about Egyptian royalty, their religion and rituals, but this exhibit gives a small insight into the daily life of everyday members of society.
More than just function, shoes reflected social and economic status too.
Some are made from palm leaves, while others are heavily decorated.
Mamdouh el-Damaty, Egyptian Minister of Antiquities, opens the exhibit.
The exhibition is one of a kind, and it offers a intimate look at an Egyptian craft, through the ages, and although the exhibit is small; one room, it tells the story of this craft across 5,000 years.
The Stepping Through Time exhibition runs at Cairo's Egyptian Museum until 31 December 2015.

1. Various of Mahmouad Abd Alrasool, shoe mender, opening shoe mending shop for the day
2. Various of Alrasool mending shoes
3. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mahmouad Abd Alrasool, shoe mender:
A pair of soles may cost 20 Egyptian pounds (2.6 US dollars) for instance, on the other hand a customer can buy a whole new nice pair of shoes for only 15 (Egyptian pounds, 1.9 US dollars). When we make a pair of new slippers it costs 30 Egyptian pounds (3.8 US dollars), whereas a customer can buy a ready-made one for about 10 to 15 Egyptian pounds (1.3- 1.9 US dollars). That's why we don’t have a lot of work nowadays.”
4. Various of Alrasool mending shoes
5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mahmouad Abd Alrasool, shoe mender:
Young people are not willing to gain experience in this craft because it doesn't have promising future and the ready-made shoes are everywhere. So this craft won’t provide a living for them.
6. Various of Abdel Salam Abdel Alem, 74, owner of shoe mending shop, working
7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel Salam Abdel Alem, 74, owner of a shoe mending shop:
Chinese products are cheap and widely spread. The craft (of shoe mending) is no longer as it used to be. There is no workflow.
8. Alem working
9. Various of Alem with customer
10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel Salam Abdel Alem, 74, owner of a shoe mending shop:
In two working days my income is about 1.75 Egyptian pounds (0.22 US dollars). We don't have any profits any longer. Customers come every once in a while and yet we have daily expenses like meals and drinks, like tea.
11. Various of young boy showing Alem shoes to fix
Cairo - 14 February 2016
12. Shoes on display at shoe shop
13. Street vendor Yasser Shahin, 26, arranging shoes at his stall
14. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Yasser Shahin, 26, street vendor:
We buy cheap products made with (cheap) simple materials to help poor people as they need a cheap product. A father who has three or four daughters will prefer to buy a blouse from a street vendor for 40 or 50 Egyptian pounds (5-6 US dollars) instead of getting it for 200 Egyptian pounds (26 US dollars) from a shop and it will be a good (quality) looking one as well.
15. Various of people looking at shoes at market
16. Set up shots of shoe shop owner Mostafa Fawzy, rearranging shoes
17. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mostafa Fawzy, shoe shop owner:
The Egyptians who closed their shops closed them due to inability to compete with imported Chinese products. The merchant now searches for cheap products to sell, as the customer is poor. Nowadays, a man who has four children and wants to buy them new shoes, can buy four pairs of trainers for 100 or 120 Egyptian pounds (13-15 US dollars). Unlike leather shoes, which will cost him 100 Egyptian pounds (13 US dollars) per pair, so he is forced to buy the cheaper ones.”
18. People browsing through shoes
LEADIN:
One of the oldest professions in Egypt that may soon become extinct.
Cobblers are a dying breed as increasingly more people prefer to buy a cheap new pair of shoes, often imported from China, rather than to fix their old ones.
STORYLINE:
It is nine a.m., the time Mahmouad Abd Alrasool, opens his shoe mending shop in downtown Cairo for the day.
He places his shoe rack outside the shop, where he hangs up some of the shoes he has left to mend and gets cracking.
Alrasool's first job of the day is to strengthen the soles of a pair of brown boots, that got worn out.
He uses a traditional shoe sewing machine to do it.
Next, he replaces the soles of black moccasins by nailing the new ones by hand inside the shoes.
He is also worried cobblers are a dying breed.

Hidden Shoes In Egyptian Temple
Hidden Shoes In Egyptian Temple.
Archaeologists discovered an unusual “treasure” during an expedition in Egypt in 2004. In a jar, placed in the middle of two other jars and set into a small open space between two mud-brick walls, were seven shoes. Two of the pairs were children’s shoes, and the remaining shoes belonged to an adult that possibly had a limp. Archaeologist Angelo Sesana stated that this “shoe jar” had been hidden deliberately more than 2,000 years ago.
Andre Veldmeijer, an expert in ancient footwear, has called the discovery of the shoes “extraordinary” because of the excellent condition they were found in. He analyzed the shoes and theorized that they were quite expensive and meant for status. He added that there’s mystery surrounding the hiding of the shoes and how the owners never retrieved them. Veldmeijer speculated that there may have been some form of unrest in the area, causing someone to hide their shoes for reasons unknown and flee the scene.
