Part 1 - Rural Water Supply Drill - High Level, Alberta - May 2017
This is the first of several clips from our rural water supply drill in High Level, Alberta (Canada) on May 8, 2017. As usual, the drill was the culmination of our 2-day rural water supply seminar - the goal, to haul water uninterrupted for two hours. The challenge in High Level is the remoteness - when your next tender is 30 to 45 minutes away, a tender shuttle can be problematic. But...you have to be ready to operate a tender shuttle on those large fires that require mutual aid response. Thus...the seminar and drill. Visit the link to see more about a huge fire in High Level that required a huge water supply effort.
Units participating in the drill were High Level FD Engine 1, Engine 2, and Tender 1. From Beaver First Nation...Tender 1. The clip is narrated by Mark Davis from GBW Associates, LLC.

Dingle Tower in Sir Sandford Fleming Park, Halifax NS, Canada
CONSTRUCTION DATE(S)
1908/01/01 to 1912/01/01
LISTED ON THE CANADIAN REGISTER: 2005/03/01
DESCRIPTION OF HISTORIC PLACE
Donated by Sir Sandford Fleming to the people of Halifax in 1908, the 95 acre Park consists of wooded and open areas in hilly terrain, saltwater frontage on the Arm, a large freshwater ponds (The Frog Pond), numerous paths, small beaches, and the Dingle (Memorial) Tower. The Tower is a large, four-sided, slightly tapered structure situated in a prominent location on a knoll, overlooking the shores of the North West Arm. The designation applies to the Park and the Tower.
HERITAGE VALUE
The Heritage value of the Sir Sandford Fleming Park lies in its association with Sir Sandford Flemming, and his donation of the land to the people of Halifax to commemorative the 150th anniversay of the establishment of representative government in Nova Scotia in 1758. Fleming's proposal to construct a memorial tower was endorsed by the City of Halifax and the local Canadian Club who undertook fundraising for the structure. Donations were received from many places within the Empire and plaques commemorating the gifts, and stones from the countries of the Empire, were placed on the interior walls. Heritage value is also found in the long standing public use of the Park for recreation and leisure in which the Tower is a prominent local landmark.
Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915) moved from Scotland to Canada in 1845, was educated at Columbia University, Toronto and Queen's (Kingston), and later became appointed to conduct surveys of possible routes for the Intercolonial Railway from Halifax to Quebec. He was eventually moved up to the position of Engineer in Chief for the Canadian Pacific Railway, a position which ensured him a prominent position in Canadian history. Fleming maintained a high profile in both political and social circles in Halifax and throughout his life. He was a member of the Halifax Club, the Chancellor of Queen's University and the director of the Hudson's Bay Company. He also designed Canada's first postage stamp and became internationally famous for establishing Universal Stardard Time which was universally adopted in 1884. The park was part of his original estate along the North West Arm and commemorates Sir Sandford Fleming as a prominent Canadian citizen.
The architectural design of the Dingle Tower is divided into three distinct sections. The tower is set upon a well defined granite base, and is constructed predominantly of ironstone obtained from a quarry at nearby Purcell's Cove. The base and cap are separated from the midsection by wide granite string courses. The top cap is entirely comprised of granite, and all four sides have an elaborate stone Palladian styled opening with a heavy projecting sill below as an open viewing area . The copper, hipped roof has a broad overhang with dentilled eaves. Two large, bronze lions located at the foot of the tower were donated by the Royal Colonial Institute of London in 1913, and were designed by the British sculptor Albert Brucejoy who's design was influenced by the monumental lions at Trafalgar Square in London, England.
The tower affords a beautiful view of the North West Arm and the surrounding Sir Sandford Fleming Park. It can also be seen from many communities along the North West Arm and is well recognized as a local landmark. Numerous plaques line the interior walls of the tower having been donated by other provinces and countries around the world showing the impact of the development of British parliamentary institutions in Nova Scotia.

Saamis Tepee and Police Point Park - Medicine Hat, AB, Canada
My first 19 slides are from the Saamis Tepee and the surrounding area. The last 18 are of Police Point Park in Medicine Hat.
About the SAAMIS TEPEE
~~Saamis Tepee is a very recognizable landmark located easily in the community of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.
Towering at just over 65 metres (215 feet) the giant steel tepee looms over the Seven Persons Creek river valley and its coulees.
The Saamis Tepee was built in 1988 for the Calgary Winter Olympics by Steve Illes. The tepee once housed the famous Olympic flame during the ceremonies.
The tepee was meant as a symbol of the First Nation people during the Olympics. The colors of the tepee rings have significance. The white ring is said to represent purity, the red represents the sun and the blue means water.
After the Olympics, the giant tepee was disassembled and moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Today, it sits on a ridge, easily viewed from Highway #1 when coming and going from Medicine Hat.
Inside the Saamis Tepee are a series of 10 historic story boards detailing the lives of the First Nation people. There are giant murals, beautifully done - each with information billboards.
From the Saamis Tepee there is a recreation trail leading north which connects to the Kin Coulee Park and the Heritage Trail System.~~
About POLICE POINT PARK
~~Police Point Park is a wilderness park and recreation destination situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River in the community of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.
The 98 hectare ( 242 acre) park is a wildlife nature reserve heavily decorated in a forest of cottonwood trees with open fields of prairie grasslands. It is a popular destination for walking, sightseeing and birdwatching.
This Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada park is part of a flood plain and is identified as a riparian area with a sensitive eco system. At one time the parkland was a NWMP (North West Mounted Police) outpost monitoring the fur trade and policing whisky.
Today, it is a wilderness park with very little human intervention located away from city sights and sounds. The lack of noise and high people traffic combined with the high volume of trees and the rich river environment - the park attracts many birds to the area.
The Police Point Park is one of the more popular birdwatching destinations in Medicine Hat for viewing song birds and waterfowl.
Some of the bird sightings may include the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, Fox Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, ,American Tree Sparrows, American Kestrel, Juncos, Red-breasted Nuthatch, House Finches and Black-capped Chickadees.
Connecting to the park is a paved trail and exploring the park is a series of red rock gravel, dirt and sand trails. The paved trail connects the city of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada to Police Point Park via the Heritage Trail System.
The side trails in the Police Point Park explore the forested park and the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. Many of the trails are loop routes. Most are very easy going, short and level paths.
The main gravel pathway leads visitors out to the bend in the South Saskatchewan River where the mighty river meets the Rose and Seven Persons Creeks.
Along the trails are information signs, lookout viewing platforms and some sightseeing benches providing some of the best views in the community of the river.
At the entrance of the park is the Police Point Nature Centre. Here they provide washrooms, interpretive guides and more information signs.~~
