Our day at the Boatyard in Barbados ...
pier level view of cruise ships docked in Bridgetown, Barbados
This is a view from the cruise ship pier in Bridgetown, Barbados of several cruise ships docked there on March 1, 2018. Our ship is the far ship on the left of the screen which is the Viking Sea and we are in the process of walking back to it from our panoramic bus tour of the island when I got this video. We chose to walk instead of riding a shuttle bus which Viking thoughtfully provided given that we were the farthest ship down the pier. We were on a Viking West Indies Cruise which was just about everything we could have hoped for except for not getting to visit the British Virgin Islands on account of the hurricane some months before and not getting to visit St. Martin on account of high seas.

Bridgetown, Barbados, 2017
Bridgetown is the administrative and commercial capital of Barbados. The city is located along the coast on the western part of the country, and has a population of 110 000 inhabitants (2014 data). It's origin goes back to the country's British colonial era.
The city is a great attraction to tourists, especially high income tourists from USA, Canada, Europe and elsewhere. With it's several cruise ship terminals that allow duty free shopping, Bridgetown is destination for many international cruise ships, from as far flung places as the Scandinavia.
Spatially, Bridgetown city consists of a mixture of modern and historic buildings and urban spaces. The latter, particularly those in the CBD, are amazing, consisting of excellently furnished squares, arcades, pedestrianized shopping streets, waterfront, green open spaces, etc. Overall, the CBD is very vibrant with many commercial and social activities.

Travel Destination and Catamaran Caribbean journey from Bridgetown, Barbados
Now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic city is also home to the Parliament Buildings of Barbados and the Bridgetown Port where cruise ships dock. Bridgetown is also the central hub for the island's public transport system.
Bridgetown is steeped in rich history, evidenced in some of the centuries old British colonial architecture which remains today. This well-preserved city built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, was originally named Indian Bridge for the rude bridge which had been constructed over the river (now known as the Careenage) by the Amerinidians. It was later called the town of St. Michael in official documents, before finally being named Bridgetown.
Bridgetown is home to many historical sites and attractions that are well worth a visit on your Barbados vacation. It is home to the Parliament Buildings of Barbados, National Heroes Square (formerly Trafalgar Square), Independence Square, St. Mary's Anglican Church - the site of the first city church, Jubilee Gardens - originally earmarked as a garden to commemorate Queen Victoria's golden jubilee, the Chamberlain Bridge, the Careenage, the Jewish Synagogue - one of the oldest synagogues in the western hemisphere, and so much more.
The Chamberlain Bridge is located in the heart of the capital city of Bridgetown. The bridge was originally a swing bridge constructed between 1865 and 1872 and was named after Joseph Chamberlain, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies.
The Chamberlain Bridge separates the inner and outer basins of the Careenage which is a safe harbour for many catamarans, fishing boatsand other pleasure craft. Most craft remain in the outer basin except during hurricanes and high seas when several are moved to the inner basin.
Nature's bounty has blessed Barbados with excellent weather, calm seas and steady breezes, making sailing off Barbados just beyond your imagination!
You can charter large catamarans and yachts for guided sailing tours down the scenic west coast of Barbados, gliding gently through the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea as the steady winds fill the sails. Relax on board a catamaran and watch the beautiful coastline of Barbados slip by. Then drop anchor in a quiet bay for a swim in the crystal clear waters, followed by a sumptuous Barbados lunch! Many Barbados catamaran cruises also include a stop to swim with friendly sea turtles!
Whether you're looking for a quiet sail down the coast of Barbados, an exciting water sports adventure, or a romantic sunset cruise, you'll find sailing in Barbados to be simply delightful!
You can join a scheduled cruise or customise your own personal sailing tour.
We used a Catamaran called ‘Wasn’t Me’ and it was excellent with a maximum of 25 guests. We sailed with just 9 of us and two crew. I definitely would recommend it. Why wait? Details below

Barbados Tourism Video Best Tourist Attractions in Barbados 2018
Barbados Tourism Video | Best Tourist Attractions in Barbados 2018 best places to visit barbados
One of the most well-developed of all the Caribbean and Atlantic Islands, Barbados retains the refined elegance and cultural customs of its British roots (think cricket and high tea) infused with a colorful West Indian vibe. Barbados gained independence from Britain in 1966, but many of the relics from its colonial past still stand. In Bridgetown, the clean and safe capital, impressive colonial buildings and the historic garrison are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. Around the island are sprawling sugar plantations and historic museums, along with endless tropical beauty. Pretty pink and white coral-sand beaches, pale turquoise seas, and a dramatic east coast sculpted by pounding surf are some of the island's major attractions.
1. Harrison's Cave Tour
Harrison's Cave, a crystallized limestone cavern, features streams, waterfalls, cascades, and deep pools. After an educational film, you can tour a one-and-a-half-kilometer route via electric tram, with a stop to walk to a waterfall plunging to a deep pool below. Lights illuminate the impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and cascading waters. Near the cave, a visitor center displays Arawak Indian artifacts.
2. Flower Forest
Offering beautiful vistas, in the hills of central Barbados, the Flower Forest encompasses 53 acres of peaceful forests and tropical flora on the grounds of a former sugar plantation. Garden lovers can stroll along a circuit of well-marked trails through lush foliage, with many spots to sit and relax. The beautiful palms, gingers, and many colorful orchids are highlights. After touring the grounds, you can purchase snacks at the small café.
3.Andromeda Botanic Gardens
Specializing in tropical plants from all over the world, the Andromeda Botanic Gardens are renowned not only for their collection, but also for their scenic location on a hillside overlooking the Atlantic. Of note are the breadfruit trees descended from those collected by Captain Bligh, of mutiny fame, as well as the rare species of succulents and palms. Also interesting are the large bearded fig trees, which once covered the island in vast forests, possibly prompting passing Portuguese sailors to name the island Barbados meaning the the bearded ones.
4.Crane Beach
Crane Beach, with its beautiful, pink coral sand, was once a boat landing where cargo was unloaded and lifted by a crane perched atop the cliff. Today, it's one of the most famous beaches in Barbados. Cruise ship visitors, tourists, and locals alike come here to frolic in the rolling surf, sunbathe on the soft sands, and peek at the luxury hotel overlooking the beach. Once called the Crane Beach Hotel, it is the oldest hotel in Barbados and is now known simply as The Crane.
5.Barbados Wildlife Reserve
At the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, opposite Farley Hill, you can walk among the animals. Shady paths thread through a mahogany forest populated by deer, agoutis, tortoises, iguanas, and a raucous collection of tropical birds. Wild green monkeys, imported from Africa by early settlers, are also often seen at dawn and dusk, and plant lovers will enjoy the park's vibrant display of orchids. The entrance fee includes a visit to nearby Grenade Hall Signal Station.

This Barbados beach is pink! | The Crane Beach
Ever seen a pink beach? Me neither. That is, of course, until I stayed at the Crane Resort in Barbados. The Crane Beach, which sits at the bottom of the Crane Resort, actually has a hint of pink to it.
In this video, I explore the beach from its cliff sides to its rough waters. My wife and I really enjoyed this beach while in Barbados. It's a great place to relax!
