Places to see in ( Barry - UK )
Barry is a town in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, on the north coast of the Bristol Channel approximately 7 miles south-southwest of Cardiff. Barry is a seaside resort, with attractions including several beaches and the resurrected Barry Island Pleasure Park.
Once a small village, Barry has absorbed its larger neighbouring villages of Cadoxton and Barry Island. Barry grew significantly from the 1880s with the development of Barry Docks, which in 1913 was the largest coal port in the world. The place was possibly named after Saint Baruc.
Barry is the administrative centre of the Vale of Glamorgan, and home to Barry Town United F.C. Although still a port, Barry is more of a manufacturing town and as a service centre for the Vale of Glamorgan. Barry Docks and the adjoining industrial area form the largest employment centre in the town.
To the west of Barry is Porthkerry Park. This is a large area of open space, with woodlands, streams, and access to a pebbly beach. In the park is the former Barry Railway Company viaduct with 13 arched spans standing 110 ft high. Following the closure of the Vale of Glamorgan line to passengers between Barry and Bridgend in 1964, it was reopened on 10th June 2005 and for most of its 19 miles, provides a scenic view and link to Llantwit Major and beyond to Bridgend.
The Barry Island peninsula was an island until the 1880s when it was linked to the mainland as the town of Barry expanded. This was partly due to the opening of Barry Dock by the Barry Railway Company. Established by David Davies, the docks now link up the gap which used to form Barry Island. There is a railway station to access the island at Barry Docks, there is also a heritage railway station which houses refurbished steam passenger trains. The railway is open to the public and holds events involving a large steam engine replica of Thomas the Tank Engine.
Barry Island is now known for its beach and Barry Island Pleasure Park. From 1966, the island was home to a Butlins Holiday camp, which was closed in 1987 and taken over by Majestic Holidays who renamed it Barry Island Resort. The preserved Vale of Glamorgan Railway runs on Barry Island. From the late 1960s onwards, Woodhams Yard, Barry was home to hundreds of British Rail steam locomotives that were due to be scrapped.

Join us for the last day of our May bank holiday Welsh weekender finishing off at Barry Island on our way home back to England
Barry Island was busy, really busy in fact it took us hours to get there and park up, leaving only after a few hours later but was great to experience such a small park with high crowds getting on the giant Ferris Wheel, Dragon Challenge (old Beastie from Alton Towers) and log flume
Barry Island Pleasure Park originally opened way back in 1897 and was home to numerous classic rides including 3 wooden coasters, themed log flume and ghost train designed by John Wardley, the park is now owned by traveling showman Henry Danter

Barry, Vale of Glamorgan
Barry is a town and community in the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales. It is located along the northern coast of the Bristol Channel less than 7 miles south-southwest of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Barry is a seaside resort, with attractions including several beaches and formerly Barry Island Pleasure Park. Once a small village, Barry has absorbed its larger neighbouring villages of Cadoxton and Barry Island. It grew significantly from the 1880s with the development of Barry Docks, which in 1913 was the largest coal port in the world.
The place was possibly named after Saint Baruc. However another explanation is that it comes from the Welsh bar meaning a hill or rise. Therefore the Welsh name, Y Barri, means 'The Hills. Given Barry's geography, it is an apt description. The first reference to it being named after St Baruc is from Giraldus Cambriensis. Gerald was himself from Barry and describes the area thus:

Barry Cohen K2JV: QRT-500 - The Final 500kHz Transmissions from UK Coastal Distress Watch Stations
As part of its 2018 Guest Speaker Series, The Fair Lawn Amateur Radio Club September program featured a look back at an overlooked part of radio history virtually unknown on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
What did early radio sound like? Our speaker starts with the history of the 500kHz system and the early Marconi stations. The discussion includes some interesting ships and examples of distress communications. The program concludes with the actual final CW transmissions between English, Irish and other European stations. The presentation includes both visuals and video to help tell the story of this aspect of early radio communication.
Dr. Cohen was born in New York City and still maintains that he is a New Yorker. He was educated in the NYC public school system including the Bronx High School of Science. Barry continued his education at Brown University where he earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, and then at the Johns Hopkins University which conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Engineering. His first Ham License was issued in 1945, W2PDG, and his first QSO occurred early in 1946, on 40 meter CW. He has been active, mostly on CW, ever since.
Upon graduation from Johns Hopkins, Dr. Cohen worked at Bell Laboratories Murray Hill for about 10 years. His research was on semiconductor devices and materials for use in high-speed circuits. His most intriguing project was the development of the infrared solid state laser, a device used today in every CD and DVD player. A Fulbright Fellow, Dr. Cohen founded Research Devices Inc. a New Jersey Corporation which manufactured and sold infrared and other equipment for manufacturing and failure analysis of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. Now retired, he works to establish ham radio related programs with school children, the Emergency Response Team established with NPARC, communications and space programs at elementary and high schools in New Jersey, and organizing communications for public events such as street fairs, road races, OEM exercises, Ham Radio summer camps, and others.

Evening at Barry COASTAL DRONE VIEWS
I grew up in Barry so lots of fond memories here of where I lived and hung out. the cliffs, Porthkerry Park, The Knapp Beach and the Bay then a flight over to Barry Island Beach and the funfair topping it all off with a twiklight look at the Docks inlet and some discarded boats.

SUB-CULTURES UK © Barry Gonen Originals
A sort of trip down memory lane. The lyrics came first, Most is spoken. Few pics of me included.
SUB-CULTURES UK
We all wanted to be different,
We didn’t want to conform.
We created our own sub-cultures,
Then put on the same uniform.
We had our own music,
We made our own fashions,
We sometimes shocked our families,
But we prevailed in our passions.
From Beatniks to Teddy boys,
Greasers to Mods and rockers,
Hippies to Skin heads, to Punks, and wild Metal Heads.
Freaks, Glam Rockers, Black scary Gothers,
And with their leg squeezed jeans.
Emos with their make-up and suicidal dreams.
We wore ear rings, nose rings,
Bracelets, Piercings, studs and chains,
Necklaces, flowers, Wrist Bangles,
And charming little ankle bells.
We wore tie dies, drain pipes,
Bell bottoms and flairs,
Swede shoes or flip flop sandals,
Some with friends, evenly shared,
Dr. Martens Bovver boots, Chelsea boots,
Platforms, high heels or winkle pickers.
Leather jackets, anoraks or Italian mohair suits,
Colored kaftans, embroidered coats or vests,
Bandanas, Head bands, Berets, Flat Caps,
Silk shiny Scarves or perching Pork Pie hats.
We had Quiffs, Mohawks, or short back and sides,
Multi colored lacquered hair and gelled up spikes,
We grew moustaches and beards,
with crew cuts and side-burns next to our ears,
We rode hot rods, scooters, bangers and powerful motor bikes
Painted Volkswagen vans with which to transport the tribes.
We took amphetamines, uppers, downers, and purple hearts,
Psychedelic trippy LSD, Pot or weed or grass,
We took part in Sit-ins, Protests, Squats and Demonstrations
We marched proudly waving our banners of our own creation,
Some took part in violent battles at the holiday coasts
causing public sensations and Headline Posts.
We all loved our contemporary music,
Pop, Blues, Jazz, Country, R & B and Rock & Roll
Folk, Ska, Reggae, Disco, Funk and Soul.
We all loved to dance in pubs or clubs
Or to the juke box in the road-side Diners and Cafes,
In the parks, in the streets or at the annual Fests.
The One thing in common was our rhythmic Zest!
We all grew up, if we managed to survive,
Most of us put the past actions aside,
But we all reminisce on our youth with pride.
Fond memories which no-one can Us deny.
