Aviemore is a town in the Cairngorms National Park, in the Scottish Highlands. culloden exhibition 3 (LONG).AVI
I recently went to Culloden battlefield (near Inverness) in Scotland. Since last visit they've added an impressive visitors centre, which included this surround video experience. It was better in person, but you get a flavour of it still in this video.
(Normally I put my travel clips on Flickr but this one was too long to fit, so putting it here instead. If you want to see more photos/videos from Culloden they're here:
Experience Scotland’s Highland Games
Planning a trip to Scotland this summer? Consider attending a Highland Games, which is like a track meet crossed with a county fair.
If you’re interested in experiencing one of these “kilty pleasures,” you can find Scots squaring off in various competitions across the country. Each year, more than 80 games take place in different towns, villages, and castles on weekends throughout the summer (May through September). And in smaller towns, you can simply drop in and join the fun. You’ll pay about $10 at the gate and enjoy a day full of sport, fun, culture, and Scottish gut-bomb taste treats. I find that tourists are not only made to feel welcome, they are encouraged to give a couple of events a try themselves. (You’ll see me do just that in this clip from my European Festivals special.)
Before you go, be sure to pick up a copy of my Rick Steves Scotland guidebook. A new edition, freshly updated for 2018, is available now:

URQUHART CASTLE | INVERNESS | SCOTLAND : PART I

Wild natural beauty and 1,000 years of history - Urquhart Castle offers a taste of the Highlands at their most dramatic.
Discover 1,000 years of drama, experience a glimpse of medieval life and enjoy stunning views over Loch Ness from the ruins of the greatest castle in the Highlands.
Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart saw great conflict during its 500 years as a medieval fortress. Control of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence. The power struggles continued, as the Lords of the Isles regularly raided both castle and glen up until the 1500s.
The last of the government troops garrisoned here during the Jacobite Risings blew up the castle when they left. Urquhart’s iconic ruins remain, offering glimpses into medieval times and the lives of its noble residents.
Climb the Grant Tower that watches over the iconic loch, peer into a miserable prison cell, said to have held the legendary Gaelic bard Domhnall Donn, and imagine the splendid banquets staged in the great hall. A more comfortable view of the iconic ruins, against a backdrop of Loch Ness and the hills of the Great Glen, can be enjoyed from the café.
Urquhart’s stories are also told through a remarkable collection of artefacts left by its residents, historic replicas, including a full-sized, working trebuchet siege engine, and a short film.
The castle has a distinctly Highland heritage and the site has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in Scottish history. This is where St Columba is said to have worked miracles in the 6th century, where acts of chivalry and defiance provided inspiration during the Wars of Independence and where the MacDonald Lords of the Isles struggled with the Crown for power.
The visitor centre is fully accessible and there is a photographic guide for those who have mobility issues. Disability buggies are available on request.
Opening Times:
Mondays to Sundays throughout June, July and August the castle will be open until 8pm. (last entry is 7.15pm)
Very occasionally the property has to close at short notice due to adverse weather conditions or other reasons out with our control. Please check the Historic Scotland closures page for any unexpected site closures

Mortals in Scotland
It's a silly video of me and my friend visiting Edinburgh / Inverness this November 2010. If you do not appreciate my poor qualities as a movie maker, you might simply enjoy the song. It's the Braveheart theme and doesn't match the video at all. But I love it nevertheless.
...and hey, it's my video, I can play every song I like! :))

MacDonald Family Scotland Road Trip 2015
The MacDonald family Scotland Road Trip 2015. Filming by myself and my sister Becky, edited by me. Sorry for the bagpipes all the way through, but you can't have a Scottish holiday video without them! Stay to the end to see some amazing performers at Edinburgh Tattoo. On our two week holiday we visited Glasgow, Loch Lomond, Fort William, Kyle of Lochalsh, Drumnadrochit, Thurso, Orkney Islands, Muir of Ord, Pitlochry, and our final stop was Edinburgh.
