Check out our new orientation video!
Over the last year we have worked with the great crew at Nova Stream to create our new five minute video. We are excited to share it with you, our followers and our visitors to the site. We hope that it will prepare visitors for their tour of the Village.
This video would not have been possible without funding from Support4Culture.

Gaelic singing at Highland Village Museum, Iona, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
I have corrected the original, incorrect, translation I had on - thank you Domhnall1946
The song is actually a sailor's song about the sea -
Verse1 - is about a hard winter when a French vessel was lost at Cape George
Verse 2 - is about leaving on a Monday, but being driven off course, main man aboard.
Verse 3 - clearer at dusk, we lit candles & fixed the compass
Verse 4 - mother is melancholy, weeping for her brothers - one or two on board
Verse 5 - Skipper says to crew Raise your Spirits, put a reef in the sails
Verse 6 - Sailor's sweetheart verse. She won't be false.
The Iona Heights Inn | Cape Breton Hotel in Nova Scotia
The Iona Heights Inn Hotel was my base for exploring Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia.
This hotel is located beside the Highland Village Museum near the small town of Iona.
From here the Cabot Trail is a short drive away and easily accessible.
I was able to drive the entire Cabot Trail from the Iona Heights Inn in a single day.
The hotel itself was amazing for the price. Spacious rooms with incredible views of Bras d'Or Lake.
Prices start at ~$88 per night for a double room.

Cape Breton According Kenzie & Colin - WE WILL SING TRAILER
The Highland Arts Theatre is very proud to announce the launch of a new concert series: Cape Breton According to
Each concert will pair an established Cape Breton musician with a new generation musician or band with a similar style, teaming up to play a mix of the classic songs we all know and love as well as new original songs written specifically for this concert.
The first concert in the series will feature two such Cape Breton artists: Kenzie MacNeil and Colin Grant.
Kenzie and Colin have been longtime friends and collaborators and have a musical sensibility unrivaled in their perspective fields. They have both strongly embraced this project and are excited to lead the way, hopefully fostering a birthing ground for a whole new generation of classic Cape Breton music.
Kenzie is of course best known as the composer of the unofficial anthem of Cape Breton The Island and is one of the most prolific and well-established members of the local entertainment industry with over 50 years experience in music, theatre, film & television, radio, and producing. He was one of the original founders of The Rise and Follies of Cape Breton Island and wrote countless songs through the decades. Said Artistic Director Wesley J. Colford, We are so honoured to have Kenzie on this project as our flagship Cape Breton musical series and we cant wait to see what he comes up with next!
Colin Grant has had a varied and equally prolific career as a solo artist, as well as playing with several local folk-rock bands including the previously being a member of the traditional music band Còig and more recently as a member of the Jordan Musycsyn band. He frequently tours the world.
This first concert will take place on May 22 at 8:00 PM at the Highland Arts Theatre (40 Bentinck St.).
Tickets are $30 in Advance or $37 at the Door.
What To Do In SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA l CRUISE VLOG l Ep. 18
Time for us to get off the Norwegian Gem in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and get on our bus for our shore excursion! I booked this tour through Norwegian Cruise Line though this tour is offered through most cruise lines! The tour is called, HEART OF THE ISLAND and here is the tour description from NCL's website:
“Ciad Mile Failte” - a hundred thousand welcomes await you! Nova Scotia is Latin for New Scotland and nowhere is this more evident than on Cape Breton Island. This picturesque excursion takes you to the very heart of the island. You’ll see some of the Island's most dynamic scenery, weaving a route through rugged countryside, touching the shores of the famous Bras d'Or Lakes. Known as the Great Inland Sea, as the lakes are salt water, this region is a major breeding ground for bald eagles and other wildlife.
As your tour progresses, you'll stop at the center of Cape Breton Island, Hectors' Point, Iona and visit the Nova Scotia Highland Village, a 50 acre historical site overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes. Take a journey through 180 years of Cape Breton’s Scottish architecture, hosted by costumed staff, trained in conversational Gaelic and local history. Here, you’ll view a full size replica of a Scottish Blackhouse, a one room structure occupied by the first Scottish settlers in the region and the only one of its kind in North America. A hilltop panoramic view offers a beautiful blend of land, sky and water. Enjoy tea or coffee and oatcakes before returning to your ship.”
As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

Celtic Passion - Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

The World's Largest Fiddle stands 60 feet tall in the Sydney harbor proudly welcoming one and all to Cape Breton, the masterpiece of Nova Scotia and Canada!
This fine sunny morning we had the great pleasure of meeting the lovely Dawn Beaton (one of the two extremely talented Beaton sisters). She fiddled a tune for us on our way out of Sydney and towards the Highland Village Museum in Iona. We couldn't help ourselves but dance an awkward jig to her fun little tune.
Later we arrived at the Highland Village Museum (An Clachan Gàidhealach), which is the living history museum and folk-life centre in scenic Iona, located in the heart of Cape Breton, overlooking the magnificent Barramens Strait on the Bras d'Or Lakes. We were warmly greeted by Jim who is a manager of the Village, and who speaks fluent Gaelic and is a wealth of information on both Gaelic and Island history. He got us decked out in proper clothes for the tour and then treated us to a wonderful experience around the village that included a Gaelic traditional song by a local family in one of the period kitchens.
From start to finish it was a remarkable day with remarkable people on an incredibly remarkable Island!
